  • 21、Baby Yoda Joins Oregon Firefighters in Battling Wildfires

“Because of all these photos, people are now seeing the human faces behind the wildfires," Tyler Eubanks excitedly told the Washington Post. "It is giving firefighters a huge confidence which is something that's really needed right now."

Sasha agrees, "It's a wonder how one small gesture can create a wave of kindness." She says Carver is excited that everyone likes Baby Yoda and happy that the first responders-many of whom have been unable to see their families for weeks-have a “little friend" to give them a comfort.

The toy, along with a note saying, "Thank you, firefighters. Here is a friend for you, in case you get lonely. Love, Carver," was handed to volunteers on September 12th, 2020. The thoughtful gift brought tears to their eyes. "The fires were close to us, and everyone was really high on emotion," says Tyler Eubanks. "We were all really touched that Carver wanted to give a companion to the people who were out there risking their lives to fight the wildfires.”

Eubanks delivered the toy to a group of firefighters working to contain a 25-acre flames in Colton, Oregon. She had originally intended to take a few pictures of the Baby Yoda in action for Carver, and then bring back the toy to the donation site. However, the firefighters decided to hold on to the doll and share it to lift the spirits of firefighters across the state.

"He's been a really big encouragement” said Jaebyn Drake, a firefighter with the Oregon Air National Guard. "A lot of the people on my crew, I showed them the note and everything, and they just loved it. A couple of people broke down in tears ... It just really meant a lot to us, and it was really emotional for a lot of people.”

  • 22、   The province of Pescara surrounds the city of the same name and lies in the very centre of the region of Abruzzo. This is a part of Italy of remarkable beauty and with cultural riches, yet it has never been a major destination for international visitors, largely because the region is not very well served by international flight routes. However, many Italians make their way to the coast here in the summertime. Here are places to visit around the Pescara province.

    The city of Pescara

The city of Pescara is the most famous today for being the birthplace of Gabriele D’ Annunzio, perhaps the greatest Italian writer of the modern times. It is a developed coastal resort (胜地) with several miles of popular sandy beaches and a range of summertime activities for all the family to enjoy.

    Citta Sant’ Angelo

Lying just a few miles northwest of the city of Pescara in an area famous for the production of Montepulcianod’Abruzzowine, its main visitor attractions are the churches of San Michele Arcangelo and Santa Chiara.

    Loreto Aprutino

Almost directly west of Pescara, and north of Bolognano, it is worth visiting just to see its wall painting of The Judgement, but this small town has many more to offer the visitor including the region’s pottery industry and some excellent olive oil.

    Castiglione a Casauria

If you enjoy further southwest from Loreto Aprutino, you will come to Castiglione a Casauria and the remains of the 9th-century Abbey (修道院) of San Clemente.

1Why did the Pescara province see fewer foreign tourists?

A.It is a place newly opened to the world.

B.Its climate is not well appropriate for them.

C.Most foreign tourists dislike its specific culture.

    C.Loreto Aprutino. D.Castiglione a Casauria.

  • 23、   Alibaba Cloud and the Hangzhou city government announced the launch of ET City Brain 2.0, a cloud—powered and Al-driven urban traffic-management system that aims to increase the city’s efficiency.

After over two years of testing in Alibaba’s home base, ET City Brain has become the new infrastructure (基础设施) for Hangzhou, with a total coverage of 420 square kilometers in area, including over 1,300 traffic lights. Over 200 traffic officers are connected via mobile phones, enabling them to receive real-time alerts on any traffic-related emergencies.

In version 2.0, the system will optimize the city’s firefighting abilities by providing key information to firefighters, such as water pressure, the number and position of fire hydrants (消防栓) in a given area, the location of gas pipes and other details they need to know. The information is instant, making the entire firefighting process faster, safer and more accurate.

City Brain gives meaning to data. By using AI and advanced algorithms (计算程序), City Brain is able to analyze a large amount of data and turn them into useful information in real-time speed.

As a result of City Brain’s ability to predict traffic flow, detect accidents and provide instant feedback, Hangzhou has dropped from 5th to the 57th on the list of China’s most congested cities. Hangzhou is probably the only city that can tell you how many cars are on the street at any given time.

In the case of medical emergencies, City Brain is able to change traffic lights, so emergency vehicles like ambulances and fire trucks can head to the scene without interruption, accelerating their arrival time by 49%.

Dr. Wang Jian, the head of Alibaba’s Technology Steering Committee who invented the term “City Brain”, said the system is designed to empower a city to act quickly and directly. It is more than just about traffic management. It’s really about how to make city more livable at a time of shrinking natural resources around the globe. “It is a matter of sustainability, while using as little natural resources as possible,” Wang said, “This is just the beginning.”

1What benefit will ET City Brain bring?

    A. Lower crime rates.

    B. Efficient government.

    C. Less traffic congestion.

    D. Improved medical care.

2Which of the following functions of the city Brain is NOT mentioned in the text?

    A. Predicting traffic flow.

    B. Giving quick feedback.

    C. Changing traffic lights.

    D. Handling traffic accidents.

3Which of the following best explains “optimize” in paragraph 3?

    A. Better. B. Practise.

    C. Operate. D. Emphasize.

4What can we conclude from the last paragraph?

    A. ET City Brain 2.0 is a mature version.

    B. Alibaba targets environmentally-friendly development.

    C. The government is devoted to improving the system.

    D. The system can solve the problem of lack of resources.

  • 24、   It is possible that interstellar(星际的)space explorers could face problems communicating with all the arrivals, their spoken language having changed in isolation(与世隔绝)along the way.

Therefore, a new paper by two American scholars Andrew McKenzie and Jeffrey Punske recommends that such crews include members with knowledge of what is likely to occur and how to adapt. They co-authored the article “Language Development During Interstellar Travel”, in which they discuss the concept of language change over time.

In a recent interview, McKenzie gamed it out.

“If you’ re on a spaceship for 10 generations; new concepts will emerge, new social issues will come up, and people will create ways of talking about them,” McKenzie said, and these will become the vocabulary particular to the ship. People on Earth might never know about these words. And the further away you get, the less you’re going lo talk to people back home.

So if we have Earth English and spaceship English, you will have to learn a little Earth English to send messages back, or to read the information that came with the spaceship.

“Also, keep in mind that the language back on Earth is going to change, too. So they may well be communicating like we’d be using Latin-communicating with this version of the language nobody uses.”

The authors also point out that an adaptation in the form of sign language will be needed for use with and among crew members who, genetics tell us,are sure to be born deaf.

“Every new spaceship will essentially offload linguistic(语言学)immigrants to a foreign land. Given the certainly that issues such as whether they will be discriminated will arise, and the uncertainty of exactly how they will progress, we strongly suggest that any crew exhibit strong levels of linguistic training in addition to simply knowing the required languages. There will be need for an informed linguistic policy on board that can be maintained without referring back to Earth-based regulations.”

If a study of the linguistic changes aboard ship could be performed, it would “add to its scientific value,” McKenzie and Punske conclude.

【1】What does the underlined phrase “game it out” mean?

    A.Offer a new concept.

    B.Make a further study.

    C.Give a detailed explanation.

    D.Lose the game completely.

【2】What will happen to space travellers?

    A.They will forget Earth English.

B.They will be using sign language.

C.They may have their own language system.

D.They may make adaptations to Earth English.

【3】How can we solve the problem of interstellar immigrants?

    A.Through Earth-based linguistic policy.

    B.Through adequate language training.

    C.By knowing the required language.

    D.By referring to informed rules.

【4】What is the text mainly about?

A.Why space travelers change their language.

B.How language is changed in the future time.

C.The language challenge during interstellar travel.

D.New concepts of language created in a spaceship.
