二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Super Earths are super cool, and you should really know about them. In short, they are planets slightly bigger than the Earth. And the cool part? They might be a home for life, and they're much easier to study than regular Earths.

It's kind of amazing to realize that in the past couple decades we have confirmed detections of over 4,000 exoplanets (系外行星),or planets orbiting other stars. As soon as astronomers started finding exoplanets, they realized what a wonderful zoo we live in. Planets orbiting dead remains of stars. Planets bigger than Jupiter. Purple planets. Super Earths orbiting within the Habitable Zones of their parent stars - the place where liquid water can potentially exist and where life like our own has the best shot of surviving.

Here's the thing. Astronomers are searching for Earth 2.0, a copy of our own system somewhere out there in the universe. We haven't found one yet, but we have found a bunch of Super Earths. So, if we want to play the “look for life” game, we've got to play with the hand that we've been dealt.

Here's how we play that game. Astronomers detect distant exoplanets through something called the transit method. When a planet's orbit just so happens to line up just right, it will periodically cross the face of its parent star from our point of view.

When the exoplanet crosses in front of the star, the light from that star dims(变暗淡)just a little bit. By staring at lots and lots of stars, we can look for this telltale dimming and spot an exoplanet. This method is much better at finding bigger planets than smaller ones, because the bigger planets make more dimming. So, we tend to find more Super Earths than normal Earths.

【1】Why might Super Earths be a home for life?.

A.Because they are much easier to study.

B.Because they live in the wonderful zoo.

C.Because they orbit within the Habitable Zones.

D.Because they are slightly bigger than the Earth.

【2】What does the underlined part probably mean in Paragraph 3?

A.We have already found an Earth 2.0.

B.We should make full use of what we have.

C.We have discovered life signs on Super Earths.

D.We should play the game with our own hands.

【3】What can we expect of the “transit method" in the future ?

A.It will help a planet line up with its parent star.

B.It will help exoplanets cross in front of the starts.

C.It will help the parent star become much dimmer.

D.It will help astronomers find more Super Earths.

【4】Whafs the purpose of this text?

    A.To introduce an interesting game.

    B.To recommend a detecting method.

C.To report the finding of Earth 2.0.

D.To share the knowledge of astronomy.

  • 28、   Staying positive through cold season could be the best defence against getting sick, a new American study suggests.

In an experiment that exposed healthy volunteers to a cold or flu virus, researchers found that people with a generally sunny character were less likely to fall ill. The findings, published in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine, build on evidence that a “positive emotional style” can help keep away from the common cold and other illnesses.

“People with a positive emotional style may have different immune responses to the virus,” explained lead study author Dr. Sheldon Cohen of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. “And when they do get a cold, they may experience their illness as less severe.”

Cohen and his colleagues had found in a previous study that happier people seemed less susceptible to catching a cold, but some questions remained as to whether the emotional quality itself had the effect.

For the new study, the researchers had 193 healthy adults complete standard measures of personality qualities, physical health and “emotional style”. Those who tended to be happy, energetic and easy-going were judged as having a positive emotional style, while those who were often unhappy, tense and hostile had a negative style.

Afterwards, the researchers gave them nose drops containing either a cold virus or a particular flu virus that causes flu-like symptoms. Over the next six days the volunteers reported on any aches, pains, sneezing they had. Cohen and his colleagues found that happy people were less likely to develop a cold. What’s more, when happy folks did develop a cold, their symptoms were less severe than they would be expected based on objective measures.

In contrast, people with negative characters were not at increased risk of developing a cold based on objective measures, though they did tend to get down about their symptoms.

“We find that it’s really positive emotions that have the big effect”, Cohen said, “not the negative ones.”

So can a bad-tempered person fight a cold by deciding to be happy?

1The purpose of Cohen’s new study was to _______________.

A.find effective ways to fight illnesses

B.test people’s different immune responses to cold virus

C.tell differences between happy people and unhappy people

D.examine whether health was related to emotional styles

2How did Cohen reach his conclusion?

A.By comparing the experimental results of different groups.

B.By asking the volunteers to complete a form.

C.By collecting data among people with a cold.

    D.By observing the volunteers’ symptoms.

3We can conclude from the text that_______________.

A.success is the twin of positive spirits

B.we get more by being more positive

C.the happier we are, the fewer colds we will suffer

D.physical health is more important than mental health

  • 29、Bloomberg reported on the status of Tokyo Bay, the open water swimming venue for triathletes (铁人三项运动员). Bloomberg’s report actually sums itself up quite nicely in just two words: “It stinks.”

The question of water quality first came up in 2019. During a water test prior to a paratriathlon race, E.coli was detected in more than double the amount allowed for competition by the International Triathlon Union. A local newspaper quoted one athlete as saying the bay “smelled like a toilet”.

Where the problems lie in this specific case is that there have been concerns over the pollution in Tokyo Bay for a very long time. This is due to the Tokyo metropolis having a mixed sewage (污水) system. In a mixed sewage system, drainage (排水系统) for rainwater and sewage are combined, not separate.

According to Bloomberg’s report, during times of flooding, untreated sewage system gets flushed directly into the bay in an effort to avoid flood damage. So, what happens to the untreated waste water that gets pumped directly into the bay? For the most part, it simply stays in the bay. According to research by Koibuchi, due to the size and depth of the bay, approximately 60 percent of the water in the bay is from the rivers and Tokyo’s drainpipes.

In response to that water test, Tokyo put forward new efforts to clean up the pollution in the bay. These steps include dumping massive amounts of sand into the bay, putting in polyester screens to protect against E.coli, and installing new storage tanks to hold flood runoff, so it can be treated before being released into the bay. Despite these measures, the bay has been emitting an unpleasant smell for a few weeks, according to Bloomberg’s report.

    【1】According to the passage, E.coli ______.

    A.can be a harmful substance

B.comes from the body of a sea animal

    C.may help clean the sea

D.is a kind of household waste

    A.Rainwater trapped in it.

    B.The old storage tank.

    C.Untreated sewage system.

    D.Floodwater from the ground.

【3】What can we learn from the passage?

A.The sand dumped into the bay works well to reduce the smell of the bay.

B.The efforts newly made greatly prevent the bay from emitting a bad smell.

C.The measures taken lately in response to the water test are not so effective.

D.Frequent water tests help to prevent against water pollution.

【4】What will possibly be discussed in the paragraph that follows?

    A.The bad effect of sewage.

B.The further measures to be taken.

C.Different opinions about the previous measures.

D.Athletes: attitude to the unpleasant smelling.

  • 31、Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be

used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

Youth sport has the 1 to accomplish three important objectives in children’s development. First, sport programs can provide youth with opportunities to be 2 active, which can lead to improved physical health. Second, youth sport programs have long been considered important to youth’s psychosocial development, providing opportunities to learn important life skills such as cooperation, discipline, leadership, and self-control. Third, youth sport programs are 3 for the learning of motor skills(运动技能); these motor skills serve as a foundation for future national sport stars and recreational adult sport 4. When coachers develop activities for youth practices and when sport 5 design youth-sport programs, they must consider the implication of deliberate play and deliberate practice.

Research from Telama (2006) states that regular participation in deliberate play or deliberate practice activities during childhood and youth (ages nine to eighteen) increases the likelihood of participation in sports during adulthood by six times for both males and females. Côté (2002) defines deliberate play activities in sport as those designed to maximize enjoyment. These activities are regulated by flexible rules 6 from standardized sport rules and are set up by the children or by an involved adult. Children 7 change rules to find a point where their game is similar to the actual sport but still allows for play at their level. For example, children may change soccer and basketball rules to suit their needs and environment (e.g. in the street. on a playing field or in someone’s backyard). When 8 in deliberate play activities, children are less concerned with the outcome of their outcome of their behavior (whether they win or lose) than with the behavior (having fun).

On the other hand, Ericsson (1993) suggests that the most effective learning occurs through involvement in highly structured activities defined as deliberate practice. Deliberate practice activities require effort, produce no immediate rewards, and are 9 by the goal of improving performance rather than the goal of enjoyment. When individuals are involved in deliberate play, they experiment with different combinations of behaviors, but not necessarily in the most effective way to improve performance. In contrast, when 10 are involved in deliberate practice, they exhibit behavior. focused on improving performance by the most effective means available. For example, the backhand skill in tennis could be learned and improved over time by playing matches or by creating fun practice situations. However, players could more effectively improve their backhand performance by practicing drills that might be considered less enjoyable.

Although the drills used in most effective means available practice might not be the most enjoyable, they might be the most relevant to improving performance.

  • 32、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Mash Assadollat was the grocer at our corner store. Standing behind his glass display case, he tore out some pages from a book, filled them with sugar cubes and tea and weighed them one by one on a brass tray (托盘) on the left side of his scale. Then, he folded the wrappers closed and handed it to me. I paid him and left. I got home, took the goods and emptied the wrappers.

Having not much to do in my summer vacation, I started to read the wrappers, which had once been pages of a book. How well written and attractive the words were! It was a good story. I sat there until I had read all the pages. Honestly, I had never read a book before, except for my textbooks. But when I read all eight pages, I realized that how I loved reading. The only problem was that the story stopped right at the best part, which was the most important and exciting part in the story.

I decided to get the rest of the book to satisfy my curiosity. I ran to the corner. “Hello, sir.” I gasped breathlessly. I tried speaking politely. “Where is the rest of that book? Could you please kindly give it to me? I’ll read it and bring it right back to you.” “What book? I don’t have any books in my shop.” Mash Assadollat furled his eyebrows and asked.

I tried to be convincing. “The one that you tore pages from and then used the pages to wrap sugar cubes and tea! Please, I beg you to tell me what you did with that book!” The old man frowned in surprise and disbelief. “What do you want with the rest of the book?” “Sir, I just want to see what happens in the end.”

To butter him up, I removed one of the trays of his scale, brushed the sugar off outside by the wall, wiped the tray really well with my right sleeve, and then put it back in its place. However, Mash Assadollah brushed me off lightly. “Go away, kid, and let me get back to work. That book is no good for you.”
