二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Britain seems to have great creativity — especially in the performing and visual arts.

    Theatrical tradition

Theaters in Britain date back at least to the 16th century, and the most famous playwright is of course William Shakespeare. A company was founded in his name, with a stage at his birthplace, Stratford-upon-Avon. It has trained generations of actors. In the 20th century, classical and more modern plays were also performed at many regional theaters, where actors and writers gained experience.

    Film stars

The world of film-making has involved British creative talent from the beginning. Charlie Chaplin, born in poverty in London’s East End, began as a child entertainer in music halls. He then became a pioneer of silent movies in Hollywood and created many black-and-white classics during the First World War. British actors, who were often classically trained in theater, Laurence Olivier and Alec Guinness became house-hold names after the Second World War.

    Supporting talent

Film-making creativity has been supported by two major studios. Productions at Shepperton have included Richard Attenborough’s Gandhi and Ridley Scott’s Alien. Pinewood’s most famous products must be the James Bond films. Both theater and film have their own annual festivals, including one of the biggest festivals in Scotland’s capital, Edinburgh.

    Visual expression

The visual arts also show Britain’s creative spirit, from Romantic Age painters like Turner and Constable to groups such as the Pre-Raphaelites and the modernist sculpture of Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth. Today’s famous artists — Damien Hirst or Tracey Emin — regularly show in the newspapers, and their works are sold at high prices.

【1】Which of the following helps actors and writers a lot?

    A.Musical theaters.

    B.Stratford-upon-Avon.

    C.London’s West End.

    D.Regional theaters.

【2】What can we learn from the passage about Charlie Chaplin?

A.He came from a rich family.

B.He went to theater school as a child.

C.He began as a child entertainer in Hollywood.

D.He contributed to the early film industry in Hollywood.

【3】What do we know about Damien Hirst and Tracey Emin?

A.You have to pay a lot to buy their works.

B.They have both invented new art forms.

C.They mainly learnt from Romantic Age painters.

D.You can buy their works from many major galleries.

  • 27、David Brown is known as the world’s fastest completely blind runner. He was diagnosed with Kawasaki disease at 15 months old, which led him to completely lose his sight by age 13.

Brown says he was living in fear for a number of years until he discovered his passion for running. After winning an essay contest, he earned the ticket for the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008. It was at that time that he knew he wanted to compete himself.

Paralympic runners train and compete alongside sighted guides. At the Rio Games in 2016, Brown and his partner Jerome Avery ran 10. 99 in the men’s 100-meter dash to take home the gold. Brown made his way to running from another sport. He explains that he lost his left eye when he was 3, and lost vision in his right eye over time. He played basketball as a kid, but was increasingly getting injured because he couldn’t see the ball coming. “I took the opportunity to run on the playground, and realized I had some speed there,” he says.

He pursued his passion at the Missouri School for the Blind. Brown started at the school when he was 11, and it was there that he really started running track.

He got to his first Paralympic games by writing about running. Brown was one of the 25 winners of an essay contest that got to attend the event in Beijing. He says he wrote about how he used sports to overcome obstacles, noting that a he grew up he struggled with depression. It’s important to be in sync with your running partner. His new partner Steward says he doesn’t have to slow down when running with Brown, because he’s fast. A 10- or 11-second race doesn’t require much speaking, Steward says. “It’s also an honor,”Brown says. He notes that Paralympic runners can’t do what they do without guides like Steward, who could theoretically run solo but chose not to. He calls it “a great honor”.

  • 28、The continuous increase in the number of COVID-19 cases worldwide has had a deep and broad effect on how we live and interact with one another, resulting in many changes that are likely to be long-lasting.

For example, to reduce contact during COVID-19, shaking hands, a standard style of greeting used by officials and businessmen has been replaced. In the US, the country hardest-hit by the outbreak, with over 36 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 and more than 610,000 deaths, the top health official said such social gatherings should end, even when COVID-19 is over. Anthony Fauci, director of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told The Wall Street Journal, “I don't think we should ever shake hands ever again, to be honest with you.” Neel Gandhi, a professor at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, told ESPN, a US sports broadcaster, “When we talk about transmission, the hands are the place that I focus on the most.”

If such advice from health experts is followed, it will produce a big shift in human behavior. However, some people are finding alternative ways to greet one another at a time when direct contact is disapproved of. In South Korea, bowing deeply has become popular. In Australia, officials have suggested that people pat each other on the back instead of shaking hands.

Handshakes are just one form of contact that has largely ended during COVIO-19, along with hugging and high-fives. As many people worldwide rebuild their social lives, experts are predicting that some degree of social contact will disappear for good.

  • 29、   In 2000, when I was around seven years old, my parents, sister, brother, and I were coming back from a T-ball game. There, in our driveway, we spotted two adult geese and a small gosling. The adults were startled by our return and flew away, but their baby was still too young to fly. We are no strangers to wildlife, so we avoided physical contact with the small gosling out of fear that it would keep us in its mind and be lost to its family forever. Hours passed, and night fell. The tiny little thing was wandering around our yard, unaware of what could happen.

And then another morning. And still another. Each morning, we would try to drive the goose over to his parents, who kept coming back to our yard. He wouldn’t go to them, though, and they wouldn’t come close enough to collect him. My sister Joanna decided to call the little guy Peeper, because he would follow us around the yard making a peeping noise, nonstop.

Almost a year passed. My family filled our days with feathery hugs and my dad would throw Peeper up into the air so he could fly a circle around the house.

One evening, my uncle came, and my dad wanted to show him Peeper’s circle. He threw him up in the air, but this time, Peeper just flew off. Everyone was very, very sad. We looked for him for days, calling his name, but he didn’t come back. Twenty years passed, and Peeper became a fond memory for my family.

Geese are very loyal, never forgetting their first home. Even so, it came as a total shock to me when, in 2020,an aging adult goose appeared at my home. At first, I assumed it was just another goose. After two weeks of the goose coming back repeatedly, it became clear to me that this wasn’t a random goose. He did all of the same things Peeper used to and responded to the name Peeper. My old best friend returned, 20 years later.

People desire connection with the natural world. Through Peeper, I have learned so much about myself and about the nature of love.

D.They feared being attacked by its parents.

【3】How does the writer find the experience?

    A.Pitiful.
