Animals are unlike people. They can't speak. They are not able to express themselves even if they feel pain and sadness. 【1】 Now ,we can learn from Sophie Smith and be animals' true friends— a volunteer working for animals.
On Feb. 3, 2014, a girl from Massachusetts, the US, said that circuses(马戏团)should no more use hooks(钩子)or chains on elephants. And the government should do something
【2】 They can’t walk freely. And chains bring them great pain. Some people even use hooks when they train elephants. The hooks are sharp and bring elephants much more pain. Circus actors even push a hook into an elephant's body to move it along during a show. “After some time, the elephant's skin breaks down. It feels the pain, but it can’t say anything. It can' t say no to those cruel people." Sophie told local newspaper Marblehead Reporter. She also said that it would be bad for children.
【3】 Back in 2011, as a sixth-grader, she searched for different animal protection groups online and helped them.
So when she spoke in front of 70 people at the state house, Sophie was not afraid. She was full of courage.
“Elephants aren’t treated with kindness. 【4】 I speak for them with my voice, and my love." she said.
A. Since they cannot talk, I speak for them. B. They just need people’s help. C. Some elephants are kept in chains. D. Sophie’s love toward animals started a long time ago. |
24、While many women are busy with planning their bridal showers (新娘送礼会), a baby shower usually comes as a complete surprise. A baby shower is a party where a pregnant (怀孕的) woman is “showered” with gifts and good wishes. A baby shower is usually given by a close female friend or a relative of the mother-to-be. Sometimes co-workers of a pregnant person will also hold a baby shower for her.
The baby shower is usually given when the mother-to-be is between 6 and 9 months pregnant. Predicting the date of a baby’s birth isn’t always exact. Sometimes a baby shower can also happen after the baby is born. A baby shower can be held in someone’s home or outside, like in a restaurant or a catering hall. Traditionally only women are invited to a baby shower. However, more and more baby showers are also including the father-to-be.
Like a bridal shower, a mother-to-be will register (登记) a wish list of things she wants at one or several stores. This list usually includes things the mother wants for her baby like clothes, diapers and even furniture. This way friends and family members can go to the stores and buy something from the list. Registering helps make sure that there aren’t repeat items, like 30 bottles when a new mom only needed 15.
At a baby shower, people can give cards with wishes for the new baby and mom. Most of these cards also include money or gift cards to help the mom-to-be buy whatever else she needs for the baby. Sometimes there are games as well. In one game everyone guesses the date of the baby. Another game lets people taste baby food and guess the flavor.
【1】Who was only invited to a baby shower traditionally?
A. Men. B. Children. C. Women. D. Pregnant women.
【2】Why does a mother-to-be register a wish list of things?
A. To prevent others from buying the repeat items.
B. To remind herself to buy some items for the party.
C. To remember to buy the necessary things for her friends.
D. To invite friends or family members to the baby shower.
【3】What can friends and family members do at a baby shower?
A. Play games. B. Get some money and gifts.
C. Feed the baby. D. Register a wish list of things.
【4】According to the passage, we know that ______.
A. the baby shower only happens at home
B. the baby shower never takes place after the baby is born
C. people have baby showers instead of bridal showers now
D. people hold the baby shower to send wishes to the mother-to-be

① More and more teachers say the digital age has had a good and a not-so-good influence on the American teenagers. More than 2,000 high school teachers took an online survey. 75 percent of the teachers said the Internet and digital search tools have had a “mostly good” use for their students' research habits and skills. But 87 percent agreed that these technologies “make the students not have enough attention.” And 64 percent said the technologies “do little to help them in courses.”
② The Pew Internet Project did the survey with the National Writing Project. Judy Buchanan is a voice director of the National Writing Project. Ms. Buchanan says digital research tools are helping students learn more, and learn faster. Teachers really like these tools, because they are ways to make some of learning exciting. Young people enjoy using these tools. And the goal is to help them become creative students of meaningful work, and not just that kind of copyist.
③ But one problem the survey found is that many students lack digital literacy. In other words, they trust too much of the information. Judy, Buchanan says these students, have not developed the skills they need to tell whether the online information is good or bad.
④ Another problem the survey found is something that might not seem like a problem at all, being-able to quickly find information online. Teachers say the ability of their students to work hard to find answers is becoming weaker. They say students depend too much on search engines (引擎) and do not make enough use of printed books or research, librarians.
⑤ Besides, many teachers are also worried about the problem that the Internet makes it easy for students to copy work done by others, instead of using their own abilities.

26、 Imagine a man who cannot read or write. Now imagine that same man creating a brand new alphabet (字母表). It sounds impossible, doesn’t it? Yet that is exactly what one man did—a man named Sequoyah.
Born around 1770 in America, Sequoyah was a Cherokee (切罗基人). Like other Native Americans (美国土著) of that time, he could neither read nor write. He noticed, though, how white people wrote to one another on pieces of paper. They often used these “talking leaves”, as some Native Americans called them, to communicate.
Back then, the Cherokee had no way to write down words in their own language. Sequoyah believed it was essential for the Cherokee to have a system of writing. So, in 1809, he set out to create an alphabet that the Cherokee could use to do just that.
Sequoyah started by drawing pictures, with each one symbolizing (代表) a different word or idea. He soon realized that writing sentences using pictures would be much too difficult. Sequoyah decided to try a different way. He began to develop symbols to stand for the sounds, or syllables (音节), that made up words. Twelve years later, he completed a system of writing with 86 different symbols. Each one stood for a different syllable in the Cherokee language. The symbols could easily be put together to form words. Soon thousands of Cherokee were able to read and write in their own language.
Sequoyah’s work did not end there, however. He helped to set up a print shop and began publishing (出版) a bilingual newspaper in both Cherokee and English. In later years, Sequoyah became a political leader (政治领袖) among the Cherokee.
Sequoyah died in 1843, but many Cherokee of today still use the alphabet he invented. Thanks to him, the Cherokee now have a written history that will never be forgotten.
