24、“Colour” and “color”, “favourite” and “favorite”… Have you ever wondered why Americans spell those words without a “u”? Is it because they are lazy?
Of course not. In fact, the difference in spelling was created by Noah Webster(1758-1843). He is a teacher who reformed English to make American identity stronger. Linguists(语言学家) celebrated his 250th birthday on October 16. After the Revolutionary War(1775-1783), Webster believed that Americans should have their own dictionary, rather than rely on British versions. He dropped the British “u” in some words. And he changed “centre” into “center” for children to learn English by spelling words more like they sounded.
Webster wasn’t shy about expressing his opinions. In defining preposterous (unreasonable), he wrote, “A republican government in the hands of females is preposterous.”
Webster spent 28 years on the project before completing the 70,000-word dictionary in 1828 with his American-style spellings. He also added local words. His dictionary was widely used in schools. Linguists believed it helped a new nation achieve unity and cultural independence at a time when most were focused on political freedom.
“He was the shaper of our language and the shaper of American identity,” said Joshua Kendall, who is working on a biography(传记) about Webster. “He at last bonded(联合) us through our language.”

26、“I wish I had long hair.” “I’d love short hair.” “I’d like to be taller.” “I wish I was shorter.” At times, we all want to look a bit more like someone else.
However, the people we see on TV and our phones often give us unrealistic (不切实际的) ideas about how our bodies “should” look. The truth is that everybody is different. Accepting and feeling good about our bodies is really important for our health and self-esteem (自尊).
At first, you must have body confidence (信心). Body confidence is when someone accepts and acts kindly towards his or her body. That includes weight and height, appearance (外貌) and even physical disabilities (身体残疾). Jade Parnell, from the Centre for Appearance Research (CAR), says that having body confidence is “about being accepting of your body and what it brings for you”. If you feel confident about your body, you can look after it well. Research has even shown that you are more likely to take part in activities and do well in school subjects if you feel confident. Feeling worried about your body could make you do less well at school and even feel depressed (沮丧的).
It’s important to remember that everybody is different. Treat yourself as kindly as you can. And your best friend can also help you to develop body confidence by telling you that you are prettier than you look.

In 1987, a small company named Huawei was started in Shenzhen. After more than 30 years of development, the company has now beaten Apple and become the world’s second-largest maker of smart phones behind Korea’s Samsung. It has also become the world’s largest supplier (供应商) of 5G.
But recently, Huawei faced some difficulties. The U.S. government ordered a ban (禁令) on its sales in America. American officials said Huawei gave information (that it collected) to the Chinese government. Facing the ban of the U.S., Huawei is growing. Huawei’s smart phone sales around the world rose 50 percent compared to a year earlier in the first three months of 2019.
