25、 Psychologists tell us that there are four basic stages that human beings pass through when they enter and live in a new culture. This process, which helps us to deal with culture shock, is the way our brain and our personality react to the strange new things when we move from one culture to another.
Culture begins with the” honeymoon stage. ”This is the period of time when we first arrive in which everything about the new culture is strange and exciting. We may be suffering from”jet lag(时差)”but are thrilled to be in the new environment, seeing new sights, hearing new sounds and language, eating new kings of food. This stage can last for quite a long time because we feel we are involved in some kind of great adventure.
Unfortunately, the second stage can be more difficult. After we have settled down into our new life, we can become very tired and begin to miss our homeland and our family, friends, pets. All the little problems in life seem to be much bigger and more disturbing when your face them in a foreign culture. This period of cultural adjustment(调整) can be very difficult and lead to the new arrival rejecting or pulling away from the new culture.
The third stage is called the “adjustment stage”. This is when you begin to realize that things are not so bad in the host culture. Your sense of humor usually becomes stronger and you realize that you are becoming stronger by learning to take care of yourself in the new place .Things are still difficult ,but are now a survivor.
The fourth stage can be called ”at ease at last”. Now you feel quite comfortable in your new surroundings. You can cope with most problems that occur .You may still have problems with the language, but you know you are strong enough to deal with them.
There is a fifth stage of culture shock which many people don’t know about. This is called ”reverse(反转)” culture shock. Surprisingly, this occurs when you go back to your native culture and find that you have changed and that things have changed while you have been away. Now you feel a little uncomfortable back home. Life is a struggle.
【1】When does culture shock happen?
A.when you reach your teens, culture shock happens.
B.When you move to a big city, culture shock happens.

26、My little brother sat in the corner of the living room, a pen in one hand and my father’s book in the other.
As my father walked into the room, my brother knew that he had done something wrong. I could see that he had scribbled (胡写乱画) in the book with a pen. Now, he and I both waited for our father’s punishment.
My father picked up his book and looked at it carefully. My father was a teacher. For him, books were very important, and yet he loved his children. Instead of punishing my brother, he took the pen from my brother’s hand, and then wrote in the book himself: John’s work, 1959, age 2. I’m very thankful to you for scribbling in my book.
“Wow,” I thought. “Is this punishment?”
The years and the books came and went. We always knew our parents loved us. From time to time we would open the book, look at the scribbles and read my father’s expression of love. My father taught us how important it is when our lives are touched by little hands. He also taught us about what is really important in life: people, not things.
Now I am a father too. Unlike my father, I don’t wait for my daughters to take books from my bookshelf and scribble in them. I take one down and give it to my children to scribble. As I look at their artwork (艺术作品), I think about my father and the lessons he taught me.

27、Last week, Chicago became the first city in the US to join the “Lights Out Plan”. People turned off the lights in the city’s tallest buildings after midnight so that thousands of birds could get to their winter homes. Every year in autumn, some birds fly over Chicago on their way to the south, and come back the next spring.
Lights mean danger to birds. Birds find their way by looking at the stars in the sky. Lights in tall buildings are so bright that birds may mistake them as stars. This means they can not find the right way to go back home. It’s a pity that a lot of birds even die from lights.
This month, about 300 kinds of birds are flying over Chicago to go back to the south to live through the cold winter. Birds fly to warmer places for a few reasons. Many birds cannot live in the cold, so they fly to warmer places. But there are other reasons, too. Birds need to look for food in the south. Another reason is that they want to have baby birds. Many birds like to have their baby birds in the same “house” they lived in last year, so they fly back there. At the same time, birds give their young a better chance of growing up, avoid being eaten by predators (捕食者) .
There are about 9, 000 kinds of birds in the world, and about 600 kinds of birds migrate. Some birds can fly a very long way. Sometimes they fly to other countries. We have fewer birds today because there are fewer places for birds.
【1】Why did people in Chicago turn off their lights last week?
