  • 24、What will the car be like in the future? Maybe we can sit in a car that can drive itself.

About 40 years ago, scientists from the United States started to develop self-driving cars (无人驾驶汽车). The most famous recent one was made by Google in 2009. There are cameras and radars (雷达) on the top of the car. They allow the computer in the car to draw a 3D map of the environment. Chinese scientists have also successfully developed a self-driving car. The car made a trip from Changsha to Wuhan.

Is a self-driving car safe? A recent study shows that robots make safer drivers than humans. If only 10% of cars on the street are self-driving, they will save 1,000 lives every year. If 90% of vehicles (交通工具) are self-driving, 21,700 lives will be saved a year. However, a self-driving car is expensive and each costs about $100,000. So it is impossible to be very popular in the near future.

    根据文章内容,判断句子正(T)、误(F)。

【1】American scientists started to develop self-driving cars in 2009.

【2】Cameras and computers are on the top of the self-driving car by Google.

【3】In China, scientists have successfully developed a self-driving car.

【4】The more self-driving cars there are on the street, the fewer traffic deaths there will be.

【5】The self-driving car will be very popular in the near future.

  • 25、When an animal helps another animal, it usually gets something valuable in return  For a long time, many scientists thought that only people could act generously just because it felt good.

However, a new study in Germany suggests that chimpanzees (an animal like a large monkey without a tail ) also do good things for.no real reason  And so do children who are as young as 18 months old. Maybe it is because humans and chimpanzees share an ancestor about 6 million years ago,

"People and chimpanzees appear to develop such features without any other

training," says Warneken, a scientist in Germany.

Warneken and his partners worked on adult chimpanzees that live on an island in

the African country of Uganda They also worked with 18-month-old children in Germany. The researchers performed three experiments on the adult chimpanzees and two experiments on the kids. In the first animal experiment, a person tried to reach his arm into a cage to get a stick, but he couldn't reach it.  A chimpanzee was in the cage, and it could reach the stick if it wanted to.

Thirty-six chimpanzees took part in this experiment one by one, and no chimpanzee saw what the other chimpanzees had done. Even though the animals hadn't met the person before, they usually took the stick and gave it to the person  What's more, they did this whether or not the person offered them bananas as a reward. In a similar experiment, 36 children acted in a similar way. They helped the person reach the stick, whether or not they were offered toys for their help.

Researchers did other experiments on chimpanzees and babies. No rewards were offered in either experiment. And still, both the chimpanzees and children went out of their way to help.  Still, the new study is different from earlier findings.  Researchers have found that chimpanzees don't give rewards of food to other chimpanzees, even if it costs them nothing to be generous.

1A new study in Germany suggests that _ .

    A. people also share information for good reasons

    B. children know something at the age of 18 months

    C. chimpanzees also do good things for no real reason

    D. humans should develop their abilities 6 million years ago

    A. young chimpanzees that live on an island

    B. 18-month-old children who live in Germany

    C. kids who are living with adult chimpanzees

    D. adult chimpanzees that live on the African mountain

3Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

    A. The animals hadn't met the person before the experiments.

    B. No chimpanzee saw what the other chimpanzees had done.

    C. The chimpanzees gave the person the stick in order to get a reward.

    D. Thirty-six chimpanzees joined in this experiment one by one.

4In a similar experiment, thirty-six children helped the person reach the stick

    A. If they were offered toys for their work

    B. when they were asked to give him a hand

    C. after they were ordered to act in a similar way

    D. whether they were given toys for their help or not

5From the passage we know that _

    A. children are more generous than chimpanzees m some ways

    B. chimpanzees will reward good food to other chimpanzees

    C. both chimpanzees and children can find their way to help others

    D. both chimpanzees and children can do the difficult experiments

  • 26、   Henry is going through a very hard time. His wife just passed away. He feels that life without her is pointless. For months, Henry sits in his house, doing nothing.

Henry's neighbor, an old woman named Lisa, sees him from her yard one day. She has not seen him outside in days! She asks him to come closer to the fence(篱笆) next to her house.

“Hello, Henry! Just look at this fence. It is falling apart. You are a strong man. Can you help me fix this fence?” Lisa asks.

Henry is angry inside. He is the one who needs help right now. He thinks the old lady is being kind of rude(粗鲁的). But she is too old to fix the fence herself, so he agrees.

Henry works on the fence for days. When he finishes, she thanks him. Henry smiles for the first time in months.

“What a wonderful job! Could you please paint it for me” Lisa says to him.

Henry cannot believe she is asking for more help. But because he respects(尊敬) her, he agrees. He works hard painting the fence in the hot sun. As their neighbors pass by, they all tell Henry what a beautiful job he has done. Henry feels very happy.

Henry no longer feels that life is pointless. He finally understands that Lisa wasn't being rude. She knows that staying busy can help us forget our sorrows(伤痛). He helped her, but she truly saved him.

A.Because he had nothing else to do.

B.Because he wanted to talk to someone.

    B.sorrowful→angry→happy→thankful

    C.respectful→wonderful→thankful→sorrowful

    D.happy→respectful→bored→sorrowful

3What can we learn from the story?

A.Asking others for help isn't rude.

B.Staying busy can help us forget our trouble.

C.It is hard to make friends with neighbors.

D.We can save our life in many ways.

  • 27、High speed viewing

Whenever a new technology begins to affect society, we hear arguments about the “soulless (没有灵魂的) modern way”, and the “good old days”, when things were slower. Often the older generation complains about the younger one.

This debate heated up again recently when The Beijing News reported that nearly 70 percent of young people in China speed-watch videos and shows online. It can be concluded that today’s youth are so caught up in the fast pace of modern life that they can no longer give something their full attention.

There may be some truth to this, but is it the only truth?

I am one of these so-called speed-watchers. I tend to play South Korean soap operas the 2014 sensation (大热剧) Man From the Stars (《来自星星的你》), for example at 1.5x or 2x speed. The reason is simple. I want to know what the fuss is about and I don’t want to be left out of conversations online and with friends. I also speed-listen to informative audio, like TED talks and lectures, with the only purpose of taking in as much information as possible.

But there are films and podcasts that have my full attention-and they will have it. When watching the likes of Downton Abbey (《唐顿庄园》) or Game of Thrones (《权利的游戏》), to name two, I won’t skim past even a second of the action. Every long pause and change of emotion carries meaning that would be lost by speed-watching.

So perhaps the debate shouldn’t be about which one is better-the fast life or the slow one. Instead, it’s about understanding what’s really important to you and taking control of the time you want to spend on it.

“This is the future of how we will appreciate television and movies,” wrote reporter Jeff Guo on The Washington Post. “We will watch videos in new ways using our powers of time manipulation (控制). We will be watching on our own terms.”

Indeed, there is no fast or slow there is only your own terms, and your own pace.

【1】What can we conclude from what The Beijing News reported?

A.The older generation is afraid of new technology.

B.The older generation loves looking back at the good old days.

C.Young Chinese people like to watch videos at faster speeds.

D.Young people are more likely to be happy with their lives.

【2】Why does the author share her own experience?

A.To complain about the quality of recent TV series.

B.To stress the importance of common interests with friends.

C.To tell readers what she thinks a good TV product is like.

D.To share how she chooses different speeds to watch videos.

【3】Which of the following would the author probably agree with?

    A.Slow down to enjoy life.

B.Live life at your own pace.

    C.Follow most people’s lifestyle.

D.Hurry up to take in as much as you can.
