  • 26、When people think of Beijing, the hutong style always comes to mind. It is no exaggeration (夸张) to say within hutong lives the city’s history.

The word “hutong” referred to a place where people live, which was borrowed from the Mongolian word to mean “water well” about 700 years ago. Hutong we see today are made up of small paths formed by walls of siheyuan. They were built during the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties.

When the People’s Republic of China was founded in 1949, there were more than 3,000 hutong. Most of the city’s population lived in this traditional housing. But with the modernization of the city in the 1980s and early 1990s, many hutong were pulled down to build roads, skyscrapers and modern houses.

The government has recognized the importance of hutong to Chinese cultural heritage. In 2002, Beijing listed 40 protected historical zones and increased its efforts to rebuild some key relics and older streets in the city. Nearly 500 hutong have survived.

Hutong that still exist are like oases (绿洲) of calm in the noisy city. Walking through them, it’s common to see groups of elderly people sitting together playing cards, mahjong (麻将) or Chinese chess. In the early mornings and evenings, they gather to practice traditional forms of exercise such as Taijiquan as well as dancing and singing folk songs or Peking Opera. Hutong have become a museum of Beijing’s folk customs and history.

  • 27、According to statistics(统计数字), more than 100 million Chinese suffer from natural disasters every year. Many natural disasters are likely to hit China, including typhoons, droughts, earthquakes, fires, landslides and serious snowstorms. Northern China mostly suffers from droughts while the southern and central provinces suffer from water and wind-related disasters. Floods are common in central and southern China because these areas have higher rainfalls than the north. They also have wetlands, lakes and so many rivers like the Yangtze River. Heavy rainfalls often cause the water levels to rise dangerously.

Natural disasters almost always cause human and material losses. In 2008 China met one of the deadliest earthquakes in the country in recent years. The earthquake was centred in the small town of Wenchuan, in Sichuan province, but its effects were felt throughout the whole province and even as far away as Beijing. More than 70 thousand people died while over 370 thousand were seriously injured. Farmlands, housed, animals and crops were severely damaged or entirely destroyed.

These material losses from natural disasters, on top of the injuries and deaths, lead to further suffering long after the disasters have passed. China experienced this just recently, as it is still dealing with the effects of the worst snowstorms in fifty years. In January and February of 2008 unexpected changes in weather in central and southern China led to heavy snowstorms that cut off power lines and blocked roads and railway tracks. Millions of people could not go back to their homes for the Spring Festival holiday. The human losses were not very high, but many farmers’ crops were destroyed. By January 31st the total economic loss had reached 53.8 billion yuan.

  • 28、A new keyboard tool makes it easier for blind Internet users or those who have low vision to quickly access options on popular websites.

Browsing(浏览)through offerings on Airbnb, for instance, means clicking on rows of photos. This is easy for common people but can be hard or impossible for the blind or those with poor eyesight. A new way of using the keyboard to access tables and maps lets blind and poor-sighted users visit sites more successfully than screen readers alone. The new keyboard tool, Spatial Recognition Interaction Techniques, or SPRITEs, maps different parts of the keyboard to areas on the screen.

In an experiment, 10 people, eight of whom were blind and two with poor eyesight, were asked to complete a series of tasks using their favorite screen reader technology, and then using that technology plus SPRITEs. After 15 minutes, three times as many participants were able to complete web-browsing tasks within the given time limit using SPRITEs, even though all were experienced with screen readers.

Users press keys to make the screen reader move to certain parts of the website. For instance, number keys, along the top of the keyboard, map to menu buttons. Double-clicking on a number opens that menu item’s submenu, and then the top row of letters lets the user select each item in the submenu. Most participants couldn't complete a task such as finding an item in a submenu or find certain information in a table using their favorite screen reader, but could complete it using SPRITEs. For text-based tasks such as finding a given section header, counting headings in a page, or finding a specific word, participants were able to complete them successfully using either tool.

Now the developers plan to make the system better for any website and then add it to some free online screen readers.

【1】Why did the researchers carry out the experiment?

A.To show the advantage of SPRITEs.

B.To improve the use of screen readers.

C.To test web-browsing tasks in given time.

D.To prove SPRITEs’ advancement over the screen readers.

【2】How can users open a submenu using SPRITEs?

    A.By clicking the mouse.

    B.By touching the screen.

C.By tapping twice on a number.

D.By pressing keys at the bottom.

【3】What can be learned about SPRITEs?

    A.It contributes to typing fast.

B.It can recognize words much faster.

C.It helps explore new ways to surf the Internet.

D.It assists the blind and poor-sighted to find information more easily.

【4】What can be the best title for the text?

A.The age of keyboard is gone

B.The blind and poor-sighted's needs are met

C.Screen will be combined with a new keyboard

D.New keyboard technology is helping the blind and poor-sighted

  • 29、   Essentially, everyone has two ages. a chronological(按时间计算的)age, how old the calendar says you are, and a biological age, basically the age at which your body functions as it compares to average fitness or health levels.

“Chronological age isn’t how old we really are. It’s merely a number,” said Professor David Sinclair at Harvard University. “It is biological age that determines our health and ultimately our lifespan. We all age biologically at different rates according to our genes, what we eat, how much we exercise, and what environment we live in. Biological age is the number of candles we really should be blowing out. In the future, with advances in our ability to control biological age, we may have even fewer candles on our birthday cake than the previous one.”

To calculate biological age, Professor Levine at Yale University identified nine biomarker(生物标志) that seemed to be the most influential on lifespan by a simple blood test. The numbers of those markers, such as blood sugar and immune(免疫的) measures, can be put into the computer, and the algorithm(算式;算法)does the rest.

Perhaps what’s most important here is that these measures can be changed. Doctors can take this information and help patients make changes to lifestyle, and hopefully take steps to improve their biological conditions. “I think the most exciting thing about this research is that these things aren’t set in stone,” Levine said. “People can be given the information earlier and take steps to improve their health before it’s too late.”

Levine even entered her own numbers into the algorithm. She was surprised by the results. “I always considered myself a very healthy person. I’m physically active; I eat what I consider a fairly healthy diet. But I did not find my results to be as good as I had hoped they would be. It was a wake-up call,” she said.

Levine is working with a group to provide access to the algorithm online so that anyone can calculate their biological age, identify potential risks and take steps to improve their own health in the long run. “No one wants to live an extremely long life with a lot of chronic(慢性的)diseases,”

Levine said. “By delaying the development of mental and physical functioning problems, people can still be engaged in society in their senior years. That is the ideal we should be pursuing.”

1By saying “we may have even fewer candles on our birthday cake than the previous one” in Para. 2, the author means .

A.we don’t have to celebrate our birthday every year

B.we are chronologically older than last year

C.we might be less happy than the previous year

D.we may be biologically younger than the year before

2According to Prof. Levine, what is the most exciting thing about her research?

    A.The measures are not fixed.

B.Health services can be set up.

C.The problems are not that serious.

D.The research results are written in stone.

3What does the author want to tell us by Levine’s example in Para. 5?

A.It is necessary to change our diet regularly.

B.The test results may give us wrong information.

C.Waking up early in the morning is good for our fitness.

D.The algorithm can reveal our potential health problems.

4The ultimate goal of Levine’s research is to .

    A.free people from chronic diseases

B.work out a solution to genetic problems

C.keep people socially active even in old age

D.provide people with access to scientific theory

There was once a young man who was getting ready to graduate from college. For many months he had wanted a beautiful sports car, and knowing his father had much money, he told him that was all he wanted.

With Graduation Day coming, the young man waited for signs that his father had bought the car. Finally, on the morning of his graduation, his father called him into his room. His father told him how proud he was to have such a fine son, and told him how much he loved him. He handed his son a beautiful wrapped (包装) gift box.
