  • 26、One of the most popular American singers of the twentieth century was Elvis Presley. He made the Rock & Roll music popular around the world. He sold millions of records and made many successful films, and he helped change the direction of popular music in the 1960s.

Elvis Presley was born in a poor family in 1935. His parents were simple country people who often took him to church, where he learned to sing and he never forgot the kind of songs that he used to sing in church as a child.

When he was a teenager, Elvis moved from Tupelos to Memphis in Tennessee, where he attended high school, but he was not a good student. His only real interest was singing. He began to sing in the style that is called “country and western”.

In 1955 he recorded some songs for his mother's birthday. The people at the recording studio liked his singing and his music. There was something different about it. It was country and western music, but it also sounded a little like the music, which black people used to sing in the American South, music known as “blues”.

Shortly after that, Elvis met Tom Parker, who became his manager and arranged(安排)concerts for him across the United States and new recordings as well. Soon Elvis rose to fame all over the country. Later, Elvis went to Hollywood and began to appear in films like Love Me Tender and King Creole.

But Elvis found it hard to live with success, like many other entertainment personalities (娱乐圈内的人士) .He began to take drugs and his health began to suffer. When he died at an early age of 42 in 1977, his many millions of fans were shocked. “The King Is Dead!” the newspaper said. But today his memory and his music live on and he will always be remembered as the King of Rock & Roll.

【1】Judging from the passage, we may conclude____ .

    A. Elvis forgot his church music at a later age

    A. Only country and western.

    B. Only country and blue.

    C. Both western and country.

    D. Not only country and western but also a bit “blues”.

【3】What was the main reason for death ?

  • 27、Switzerland is the best place to be born in the world in 2013, and the US is just 16th. A new study produced by the Economist Intelligence Unit says American babies will have a dimmer future than those born in Hong Kong, Ireland and even Canada. The EIU, a sister company of The Economist, attempted to measure how well countries will provide the best opportunities for a healthy, safe and prosperous life in years to come.

People born in Switzerland will tend to be the happiest and have the best quality of life judged in terms of wealth, health and trust in public institutions, according to the analysis. The Scandinavian countries of Norway, Sweden and Denmark also all make the top five in a “quality-of-life” index(指数)where it is best to be born next year.

One of the most important factors is being rich, but other factors come into play including crime, trust in public institutions and the health of family life. In total, the index takes into account 11 factors. These include fixed factors such as geography, others that change slowly over time such as demography(人口学)social and cultural characteristics, and the state of the world economy. The index also looks at income per head in 2030, which is roughly when children born in 2013 will reach adulthood. Small economies dominate the top 10 countries, with Australia coming second and New Zealand and the Netherlands not too far behind.

Half of the top 10 countries are European, but only one, the Netherlands, is from the euro-zone. The crisis-ridden south of Europe, including Greece, Portugal and Spain, falls behind despite the advantage of a favourable climate. Interestingly, the largest European economies - Germany, France and Britain — do not do particularly well. Nigeria has the unenviable title of being the worst country for a baby to enter the world in 2013.

【1According to the passage, the happiest people live in   .

    A. Denmark  B. Switzerland  C. Germany D. Nigeria

【2The factors of telling the best place to be born don’t include   .

    A. economy  B. geography

    C. trust in public institutions D. pollution

【3From the passage, we know .

    A. the Economist Intelligence Unit is a company

    B. the Economist attempted to measure the best place to live

    C. the Scandinavian countries are hardly at the top of the list

    D. half of the top 10 countries are from the euro-zone

【4The purpose of the text is to show people   .

    A. the best place to be born in 2013

    B. a new study made by the EIU

    C. the worst country to be born in 2013

    D. the factors of measuring the best place to be born

  • 28、Imagine a child standing on a diving board four feet high and asking himself the question: “Should I jump?” This is what motivation or the lack of it can do.

Motivation and goal setting are the two sides of the same coin. 【1】 Like the child on the diving board, you will stay undecided.

【2】 More than that, how should you stay motivated to achieve the goal? First, you need to evaluate yourself, your values, your strengths, your weaknesses, your achievements, your desires, etc. Only then should you set your goals.

You also need to judge the quality and depth of your motivation. This is quite important, because it is directly related to your commitment. There are times when your heart is not in your work. 【3】 So, slow down and think what you really want to do at that moment. Clarity of thoughts can help you move forward.

Another way of setting realistic goals is to analyze your short and long term objectives, keeping in mind your beliefs, values and strengths. Remember that goals are flexible. They can change according to circumstances. They also need to be measurable. You must keep these points in mind while setting your goals.

Your personal circumstances are equally important. For example, you may want to be a Pilot but can’t become one because your eyesight is not good enough. 【4】 You should reassess your goals, and motivate yourself to set a fresh goal.

You will surely need to overcome some difficulties, some planned, but most unplanned. You cannot overcome them without ample motivation. Make sure that you plan for these difficulties at the time of setting your goals.

    A.This can affect your work.

B.So how should you motivate yourself?

C.However, this should not discourage you.

D.So why should we try to set specific goals?

E.Without motivation, you can neither set a goal nor reach it.

F.Motivation is what you need most to do a good job.

  • 29、On the 15th June I set foot off the airplane and into Calgary, Canada. I've never been to this side of the world before and I had some strange expectations when I could only see fields and no cityscape in view from my plane window during landing. However, as we got closer and closer to the airport the city came into view... phew (I sighed of relief as I'm a real city-goer).

We were greeted by my girlfriend's parents and whisked away to the main city. The large amount of greenery in Calgary's city makes it a completely different city to visit and I advise if anybody is around this side of the world, it's surely an interesting visit.

Despite all the things we've done here, the thing that blew me away the most was the Canadian woodlands and mountains just a few hours outside of Calgary. The highlight for me was risking travelling to the small town of Fernie and hiking into the woods up to a small waterfall where the water was so clear we could just drink straight from the stream. The time away from the main city had a great holiday feel and gave me time to recover after a busy university year.

It's been a great experience being in the Canadian mountains and woodlands and it's taught me the importance of just having some time for yourself! So whatever you guys are doing this summer, make sure you take some time out to relax, rest and recharge.

【1】Which of the following best describes the author's feeling while landing?

    A.Embarrassed.

    B.Disappointed.

    C.Hopeful.

    D.Amazed.

【2】What makes Calgary a quite different city?

    A.Greetings from girlfriend's parents.

    B.Natural beauty of the city.

    C.Woodlands outside the city.

    D.Clear water from the stream.

【3】What does the underlined part “blew me away” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

    A.moved me away

    B.beat me off

    C.encouraged me

    D.impressed me

【4】What can be inferred about the author's travel experience?

A.He needs relaxation from his busy life.

B.He hates the city's busy life.

C.He is in great love with his girlfriend.

    D.He is enthusiastic about work.

四、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 31、Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

It is not unusual for us to gather with our nearest and dearest on the weekends. But do you know that holidays, much like relationships, can be “made, 1 and broken” through conversations? Deborag Tannen, a Georgetown University linguistics(语言学)professor, believes so. She offers suggestions to improve communication at the holiday table and beyond. Let’s take a look.

A round dining table is best for 2 a lively conversation because everyone faces one another.

Avoid 3 grandparents at the ends of a rectangular table, even though it is the traditional place of honor. Elderly people may feel lonely there because they will be 4 to hear or keep up with a conversation.

Women prefer to face each other and make eye contact when they talk. Men might look around at other things. “Guys may be more relaxed keeping staring on the TV,” says Tannen. “They’ll still be 5, though.”

Be 6 that people have different ways of talking. Each person has a different sense of tone, rhythm, timing and how long of a pause is normal in a conversation. Pay attention to people who seem left out. If you feel you are doing all the talking, hold back to give others a chance to join in. If you feel you aren’t getting a chance to speak, try pushing yourself to start talking before it seems natural or 7.

Some families find that gatherings go more 8 if they participate in an outdoor activity. Going to a park for a walk may be more 9 than sitting around chatting.

    Volcanic eruption in Congo

People are checking the damage caused by lava (熔岩) from the eruption of Mount Nyiragongo in Buhene, on the outskirts of Goma, Congo in the early hours of Sunday, May 23, 2021. The volcanic eruption in eastern Congo last night has killed at least 32 people. With little warning, Mount Nyiragongo turned the dark sky fiery (似火的) red on Saturday night and then sent out lava into villages, destroying more than 500 homes, officials and survivors said.

The volcanic eruption caused about 5, 000 people to move from one neighborhood of Goma, a city of about 2 million people, across the nearby border into Rwanda. Another 25,000 sought refuge (寻求避难) to the northwest in Sake, the U. N. children’s agency said. Great sadness, disbelief and fear hung over the area.

More than 170 children were still feared missing, and UNICEF officials said they were organizing transit centers (临时收容中心) to help children who were reportedly separated from their families in the wake of the disaster.

“The population of Goma must avoid unnecessary travel, and also avoid visiting places that have been hit by lava from the volcano because the lava is harmful,” Joseph Makundi, head of Civil Protection for the North Kivu Province said. He also said the volcano remains active and earthquakes are being recorded, calling on the population to remain alert.
