二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   The moon and its possible influence over human behaviors have been objects of tales for centuries. Although the full moon can't turn people into werewolves (狼人), some people do blame it for causing a bad night's sleep or discomfort.

To find out if lunar phases (月相) affected humans, an international group of researchers studied children to see if their sleeping patterns changed or if there were any differences in their daily activities. The research studied a total of 5, 812 children from five continents. Data collection took place over 28 months, which is the same as the number of lunar cycles. These were then divided into three lunar phases: full moon, half-moon and new moon.

The findings of the study indicated that in general, sleep duration around full moon reported an average decrease of five minutes compared to new moon. “Our study provides evidence that the moon doesn't seem to influence people's behaviors,” said Dr. Jean-Philippe Chaput from the Eastern Ontario Research Institute. The only significant finding was one percent sleep decrease in full moon. However, sleeping for five minutes less time during a full moon is not a danger to health. “Our behaviors are largely influenced by many other factors like genes, education and income,” he added.

“Folk tales and even certain examples suggest that behaviors of humans and animals are affected by lunar phases,” Dr. Chaput explained. “Whether there is science behind it or not, the moon secret will continue to attract human civilizations in the years to come.”

1Where does the moon's bad influence on human behaviors usually come from?

    A.Tales. B.Textbooks. C.News reports. D.Scientific papers.

2Why did the research last 28 months ?

A.To attract more attention. B.To cover the lunar cycles.

C.To look into more children. D.To collect as much data as possible.

3What can be concluded from the findings ?

A.We should go to bed five minutes earlier during a full moon.

B.The moon is a major cause to affect our sleep and behaviors.

C.We shouldn't worry about the moon's influence over health.

D.The moon plays a significant role in children's sleeping patterns.

4How does Dr. Chaput feel about the topic of the moon influence?

    A.It's boring. B.It's worrying C.It's frightening . D.It's interesting.

  • 27、Man has always dreamt of a world free from suffering, injustice, and above all, work. Adam and Eve are placed by God in a garden full of trees “pleasant to the sight, and good for food”. The medieval utopia (乌托邦) of Cockeyne was populated by hens laying soft-boiled eggs and roast pigs with carving knives stuck in their back.

Modern technology has made such pictures a reality. Writing in 1929, economist John Maynard Keynes predicted that, over the next 100 years, standards of living in the affluent (富铙的) world would rise between four to eight times. Freed from the burden of economic need, man would face his real, permanent problem: “How to spend the leisure (闲暇) time wisely and well?”

Well, it hasn’t happened quite like that. Keynes got one thing right: standards of living in the affluent world have indeed risen about four times. But hours of work have not fallen as much as the former. Today in Britain, we work on average about 40 hours a week, down from 50 hours in 1930, but nowhere near the 15 hours that Keynes foresaw. Why?

My father Robert and I wrote a book titled How Much is Enough, in which we tried to solve this “Keynes problem”. Among other explanations, we considered the possibility that people are frightened by endless leisure.

We concluded that this may well be true — but only because people do not know what leisure really is, or might become. Leisure today is thought of as a mere interlude in the productive process, a moment to relax before the next period of work. Indeed, it’s impossible for us to tell modern leisure apart from work. We play golf in order to stay fit, party in order to network, invest quality time in our children in order to keep them sweet. No wonder a life of leisure fills us with fear.

How can we recover real leisure? The first step would be to recall the original meaning of leisure. Leisure in the ancient world — “schole” in Greek, and “otium” in Latin — was not just time off work but a different form of activity in its own right. It was what was done freely, for its own sake, rather than for the purpose of something else.

【1】What can we infer from Paragraph 1?

A.Adam and Eve were enjoying themselves in a garden.

B.Soft-boiled eggs laid by hens were popular with people.

C.Man has long been expecting a life with enough leisure.

D.Man has dreamed of working in a world full of justice freely.

【2】Which of the following can best explain the meaning of the “Keynes problem”?

A.People don’t understand the true meaning of work.

B.People can’t tell the difference between leisure and work.

C.People have no idea how to make good use of leisure time.

D.People don’t know how to rest before restarting their work.

【3】What does the underlined word “interlude” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?

    A.Break.

    B.Stop.

    C.End.

    D.Change.

【4】In the author’s opinion, what does leisure probably mean?

A.Playing golf with your friends after work.

B.Attending parties that are good for you.

C.The right to do something for a particular purpose.

D.Enjoying something meaningful without a purpose.

【5】What is the passage mainly about?

    A.The pleasure from leisure.

    B.The real meaning of leisure.

C.The affluent world full of leisure.

D.The author’s book How Much Is Enough.

  • 28、   Education officials and industry experts are debating the future of online learning. The discussion is important because hundreds of universities in the United States have recently moved classes online because of the spread of the novel coronavirus(冠状病毒).

For Asha Choksi, the rise of Internet-based or online study programs has led to major improvements in higher education. “It’s actually given a lot more power to students in terms of how, when and where they learn,” the head of research for Pearson Education said.

Classes meet online through video conferencing. In this way, students are able to communicate with each other and their professors even when they are far away from school. However, recent research suggests the majority of college students and professors prefer in-person instruction, because they are concerned that companies supervising(监管)online learning programs are not clear about the policies the schools have.

“Students see in-class lectures as opportunities to engage with instructors, peers, and content.” the researchers wrote. In-person learning is especially important in fields like healthcare and teaching. Online education can never really take its place, said Stephanie Hall, a fellow with the independent policy research group The Century Foundation. “Students need to experience...what they’re learning about, reading about or hearing about in the classroom. And I don’t know yet the degree to which technology can facilitate that.”

“When schools make agreements with online program managers to run their online programs, they often do not make important information available to students,” Hall said. This includes how much control the company has over the design of the program or whether the teacher leading the classes was involved in their design. In addition, many colleges and universities advertise online programs as a low cost opportunity for students. But in some cases, students attending in-person classes get financial aid and online students do not.

1What does Choksi think of the online study programs?

A.They offer students more choices in study.

B.They reform the country’s education system.

    C.They provide advanced scientific knowledge.

D.They promote the development of technology.

2According to most college students and professors, what’s the advantage of in-person learning?

    A.It is convenient.

    B.It costs less to study.

C.It can better meet school policies.

D.It can improve students’ communication skills.

3What does the underlined word “facilitate” probably mean in paragraph 4?

    A.change B.apply

    C.achieve D.control

4What is Hall’s attitude towards online education?

    A.Hopeful. B.Critical.

    C.Uncaring. D.Neutral.

We h2 these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created e3, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable R4, that among these are life, L5, and the pursuit of Happiness.

That to secure these rights, g 6 are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.

That whenever any form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the P 7 to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, l8 its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such f9, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience has shown, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariable the same Object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their d 10, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.
