二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Donald Kennedy would probably be amused by an old friend's tribute(颂词)to him as “very close to being a Renaissance man.”

It's hard to argue with the facts. The 8 years he served as editor-in-chief of Science was only the final chapter in a long and very exceptional career. He spent most of it at Stanford University, including 12 years as its president, interrupted by a 2-year head of the U. S. Food and Drug Administration under former President Jimmy Carter. But the Harvard University-trained neurobiologist wore those and other honors lightly, driven by a greedy curiosity about the world and a wish to help make it a better place.

Kennedy, who died on 21 April of COVID-19 at age 88, enjoyed his role as a scientist, educator, public servant, and communicator, recalls Tom Grumbly, who was his assistant at FDA. "A brilliant, funny, very special person," says Grumbly, who leads a foundation that claims increased support for agricultural research. "He could talk on any level to people about science, without placing himself above them. And he could stand shoulder to shoulder with the best scientists in the world.”

The combination of a towering intellect and a genuine concern for the individual served Kennedy well at Science. "He was a wonderful partner at the American Association for the Advancement of ScienceAAAS," says Alan Leshner, a former longtime chief executive at AAAS, which publishes Science. "He contributed his wisdom about science and public policy to our efforts on behalf of the community.”

As editor from 2000 to 2008, Kennedy led the journal through some high-profile(备受瞩目)controversies and quickly produced editorials(社论)on all matters affecting its readers. And it wasn't his nature to step backward.

In that 2008 editorial, Kennedy offered advice to Alberts, his successor, on editing a scientific journal. But it could also stand as an epitaph(墓志铭)on his long career in the public stage.

"Be as fair as you can, sympathize with anger, confess institutional error when appropriate, and be firm," Kennedy wrote. "And when the disappointed complain to members of the AAAS Board, remember to smile!"

1What do we know about Kennedy from the first three paragraphs?

A.He worked at Stanford University after serving in Science.

B.He had a strong desire to make the world work for better.

C.He led a foundation to strongly support agricultural research.

D.He respected ordinary people but looked down on scientists.

2What did Kennedy intend to tell Alberts in his advice?

A.Working for Science is not as easy.

B.Seeing the editorial work as a career.

C.Holding truth firm with a broad mind.

    D.Remembering to smile while working.

3Which of the following can best describe Kennedy?

A.Curious and funny. B.Amusing and greedy.

C.Crazy and controversial. D.Intellectual and caring.

4What is the writer's purpose of writing this passage?

    A.To honor Kennedy. B.To introduce a celebrity.

C.To remind us of Science. D.To tell a life story.

  • 28、   Early in the morning of June 29, 1991, Carrie and Morgenstern were watching the field. Although they could see nothing through the thick fog, they kept their camera running.

By 6 a.m. the fog began to lift. A pair of circles had been flattened. The wheat were bent but not broken. Outside the circles the wheat was untouched, and there were no footprints or other marks. The circles seemed to have come from nowhere. “ I can’t explain it at all ,” Mike Carrier said to himself with his eyes wide open.

Carrier is not alone since the early 1980s, more than 2000 circles have appeared in farmer’s fields. Most circles form at night between May and August.

Some believe the circles are caused by deer or some other animals. Others think of UFOs. “The circles are messages given by those who come from outer space,” says Michael Green. “Perhaps they are trying to get in touch with us.”

Pat Delgado has done research on crop circles since 1981. He believes that they are caused by “ some form of earth energy.”

Most scientists think that there’s no scientific basis to back up Green’s or Delgado’s theories. In September 1991, Doug Bower and Dave Chorley told newsmen that since 1979 they had made circles throughout southern England to fool people who believed in UFOs. Since the early 1980s, Dr. Terence Meaden has visited more than1000 circles. Now he thinks he may have the answer. He believes true crop circles are made by vortex(旋风) which can flatten the crop.

Now crop circles are still found in southern England each summer. Are they really the traces of UFOs?

1On the morning of June 29, 1991, Carrier and Morgenstern hoped to________.

    A.record the important thing B.draw a conclusion

C.find some footprints D.see something funny

    A.meaningful B.undoubted C.instructive D.unreasonable

4According to the article we may know that all the crop circles______.

A.are caused by some animals B.are formed by earth energy

C.are not tricks made by someone D.are made by UFOs from outer space

Rapidly advancing technology and its impact on education has been a subject of debate. How can schools equip students with the skills they need to succeed in a challenging job market?

Since technology is driving these changes, there is a theory that governments should keep focusing on STEM subjects. These are often referred to as “hard skills,” which are 1 in primary school and right through to university level. In the meantime, ‘soft skills’ are being 2.

This is a mistake. Much evidence suggests that soft skills are far more 3 to graduates in the long term. Research from Harvard University on the global job market has shown that STEM- related careers grew strongly between 1989 and 2000 but have slowed down since. In contrast, jobs in the creative industries----the sector probably most 4 with the need for soft skills---are growing rapidly. Soft skills are, in fact, increasingly in demand in the workplace: Google cites creativity, leadership 5 and communication skills as top requirements for both potential and current employees.

So why are soft skills so highly 6 for?

With the rapid evolution of technology, a focus on hard skills leaves students 7 to change, as these often have a short shelf life. According to research by World Economic Forum, more than one in four adults reports a mismatch between their skills and those needed for their job role. If soft skills are taught well, these skills should enable students to adapt to change more easily and progress further in their 8 career.

Of course, technical skills are important. But without the curriculum placing equal--- if not greater --- 9 on soft skills, our education systems are missing a huge trick. Hard skills may help a student get a job in a particular industry, but soft skills will help them disrupt it, achieving a wider 10 in their chosen field.

Steve was the most amazing person in all of Minneapolis, and he was my cousin. By the age of 19, Steve was a star baseball player at the University of Minnesota. I wanted to be exactly like him. So when Steve asked me to go with him on a spring fishing trip in northern Minnesota, I was excited!

After planning the trip, we gathered clothes and supplies, and began our great adventure. We reached the Superior National Forest in northern Minnesota by early evening. On our way to the campsite, Steve pointed to a small house faraway in one of the mountains, saying that it was the ranger station (护林站) where the forester worked.

Finally, after a long walk, we reached the campsite and set up the camp as the sun was setting. Steve knew all the tricks of an experienced wilderness camper. After we gathered enough wood from the forest, he started the campfire using only stone and steel — no matches. For supper we feasted on freeze — dried beef, wild rice and pea soup. I ate greedily after all that work.

Tired enough, we climbed into our sleeping bags early and talked about our plans for fishing the next day. We were still talking quietly when a sudden north wind picked up;the temperature dropped and it began to snow. Steve found a way to increase the temperature inside the tent. He dragged a log from the forest to the opposite side of the campfire. Then he wrapped aluminum foil (铝箔) around the log. The heat from the fire reflected off the foil and into the tent. Soon images of lake fish were filling my dreams.

The snow had stopped, but sometime later a powerful wind must have kicked up the flames of our dying fire. I was suddenly awakened by Steve. Our tent was on fire. Frightened, I ran out of the tent immediately. The tent collapsed 倒塌) with Steve inside. Without any thought of endangering myself, I reached into the burning tent and pulled him to the icy lake. Fortunately, we were not seriously hurt.

    Paragraph 1:

Later, as we stood by the burning tent to keep warm, we considered our difficult situation.
