  • 21、Mapping Antarctica

Antarctica was on the map long before anyone ever laid eyes on it. Nearly 2,400 years ago, ancient Greek philosophers such as Aristotle believed that a great continent must exist at the bottom of the world. They though it was needed to balance out the continents at the top of the world. In the 1500s, mapmakers often included a fanciful continent they referred to as Terra Incognita(Latin for “unknown land”) at the bottom of their maps. But it was not until the 1800s -----after explorers had sighted and set foot on Antarctica----- that mapmakers got down to the business of really mapping the continent, which is one—and—a –half times rhe size of the U.S..

While the coastline could be mapped by ships sailing around the continent, it took airplanes—and later, satellites---to chart Antarctica’s vast interior(内陆). That job continues today. And it is a job that still require a mapmaker, or cartographer, to put on boots and head out into the wild.

Cole Kelleher is familiar with that. He is a cartographer with the Polar Geospatial Center(PGC), which is based at the University of Minnesota and has a staff at McMurdo Station. PGC teamed up with Google to use the company’s Trekker technology to capture images of Antarctica for the Internet giant’s popular feature, Street View. A Trekker camera, which is the size of a basketball, is set about two feet above a backpack. The camera records image in all directions. “It weighs about 50 pounds. I was out for two and a half days, hiking 10 to 12 hours each day,” says Kelleher. It was hard work, but really an incredible experience.” According to Kelleher there are plans to use the technology to create educational apps for museums.

The PGC staff at McMurdo Station provides highly specialized mapmaking services for the U.S. Antarctic Program. For one project, Kelleher used satellite images to map huge cracks in the ice. That helped a team of researchers know whether they could safely approach their field camp on snowmobiles. Another recent project was to help recover a giant, high—tech helium(氦气) balloon used to carry scientific instruments high into the atmosphere. These balloons are launched in Antarctica because there is no danger that they will hurt anyone when they fall back down to Earth. Using satellite images, Kelleher and colleagues created maps of where the balloon could be found.

Antarctica may no longer be Terra Incognita, but it still holds countless mysteries. Cartographers and the maps they make will continue to be essential in helping scientists unlock those secrets.

1From the passage, we can infer that Antarctica was on the map in the 1500s when________.

A.mapmakers knew it was much larger than the U.S.

B.Aristotle named the continent Terra Incognita

C.no one had ever seen or been to the continent

D.it was such an interesting continent as was often referred to

2Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?

A.It needs much work for the mapmakers to head out into the wild.

B.The interior can only be mapped by planes and satellites.

C.It is relatively easy to map Antarctica’s coastline by ship.

D.Antarctic is a vast but still mysterious continent.

3The Polar Geospatial Center (PGC) works with Google initially_________.

A.to capture images of Antarctica for Street View

B.to test the company’s Trekker technology

C.to create educational apps for museums

D.to hike for an incredible experience

4The fourth paragraph mainly talks about _______.

A.satellite images which are used to map huge cracks in the ice

B.a high-tech helium balloon for carrying scientific instruments

C.how to safely approach the researcher’s field camp and the balloon

D.the specialized mapmaking services provided by the PGC staff

  • 22、Child Friendly To

A program Child Friendly To is working to transform Toronto into a place where all children can learn, play and grow in the healthiest way. We are building a culture that applies a child-friendly view to city planning and decision-making by increasing the role and voice of children in city management and increasing the rights of children across Toronto. We believe that:

★Children are important residents with unique ideas and experiences that have the power to change how we make plans and decisions.

★Children are experts in child-friendliness. Listening to children's ideas creates opportunity and improves equality. Building a city that is friendly to children requires an understanding of what living in the city is like -or a child.

★Engaging with children is our responsibility and duty. Local government has a responsibility to listen to children, as with all residents, when making plans and decisions.

November 20th is National Child Day in Canada. The day celebrates the importance of children as active participants in their own lives and communities, who can and should have opportunities for meaningful contributions to decision-making.

To celebrate National Child Day 2020, an event was held at City Hall with local students and city leaders. Children in grades four and five in Toronto were invited to share their ideas about creating a child-friendly city. We asked them:

★What would a child-friendly Toronto look, feel and sound like?

★B you had one wish to make Toronto more child-friendly, what would it be?

D.To tell children how to be more friendly.

【2】Why should we listen to children's ideas?

A.They know more about the program.

B.They have more friends than adults do.

C.They always have better plans and decisions.

【3】Who took part in the celebration of National Child Day 2020?

A.Experts and leaders of the program.

    B.City planners and decision makers.

  • 23、 Tests are not fun—but they’re necessary. But in places like Colorado, Connecticut and New York, we’re seeing a new and problematic movement within public education to convince parents to pull their children from participating in any standardized testing. They’re opting out of(决定退出)the exams designed to measure how well our schools are teaching our children.

Let’s look at why some parents are opting out.The most common argument is that standardized testing takes too much classroom time away from instruction.Yes, in too many schools and in too many districts, there is an overemphasis on testing. As a parent, I understand that problem. My daughter came home from public school one day and said class was easy now that “the test” was over. And I thought, “What are we communicating to our kids if they think the test is the most important thing—and once it’s over, learning ends?”

Those test-crazed districts need to change. But a new study by Teach Plus, an organization that advocates for students in urban schools, found that on average, in grades three and seven, just 1.7 percent of classroom time is devoted to preparing for and taking standardized tests. That’s not shocking at all. Most people spend a larger percentage of their waking day choosing an outfit to wear or watching TV.

We also shouldn’t accept the false argument that testing restricts educators too much, stifles innovation(革新) in the classroom or takes the joy out of teaching. That line of thought assumes that the test is the be-all and end-all—and if that’s the perspective, the joy is already long gone.Teachers enter this profession because they care about kids, believe each one has the ability to succeed and want to teach far beyond minimum proficiency. The most valuable teachers are those who impart knowledge, not just information, and do so in a way that engages students and makes school interesting.

“Okay,” the opt-out crowd replies, “what about kids who are stressed out and suffering from anxiety because of standardized tests?” You know what? Life can be stressful; it can be challenging. The alternative is to hand out prizes just for participating, give out straight A’s for fear of damaging a kid’s ego—and continue to fall further and further behind as a country.I reject that mind-set(心态).

Rather than encouraging parents to opt out of testing, it would be much more productive for the leaders of this distracting movement to help improve the assessments.Make the exams more reflective of student learning.Ultimately, students and educators need test data—opting out does harm to both. And it risks endangering the progress that all of our children need.

【1】The author uses her daughter’s example to show ________.

    A.some schools overemphasize testing

B.her daughter is not a good student

    C.the test is most important

D.the quality of tests should be limited

    C.expects

    D.guides

    【3】In the author’s eyes, stress ________.

A.can be got rid of easily

    B.should be treated objectively

    C.is more important than praise

    D.affects children’s development

【4】Which of the following shows the structure of the text?

  • 24、If you want a little extra security against thieves stealing your bicycle, designer Dennis Siegel has designed a solution. The RFID Bikealarm is attached to the seat on a bicycle and gives off an alarm when it senses movement.

“The RFID Bikealarm is meant to be a useful add-on to mechanical bicycle locks because it greatly extends the range of protection with only a few components,” Siegel explains on his website. “It is low-cost, durable and easy to use.”

The Bikealarm was designed as part of Siegel’s Bachelor’s degree thesis at the University of the Arts Bremen in Germany. The device will scare off any would-be thieves the moment they begin to steal the bicycle to which it is attached. It is able to continuously sense the environment to distinguish between specific events, for instance a passing tram / car and a serious theft.

Siegel created a working model of an alarm that would sound when it sensed movement, but wasn’t initially sure how it would be best attached to a bicycle. “I decided to mount it to the rails of the seat because it allows for comfortable interaction and the position is less obvious as it looks like a small repair kit,” he says.

Siegel chose to use RFID technology rather than Bluetooth to keep the costs down. Siegel explains that the most difficult aspect of creating the alarm was to get the electronic circuit down to a small enough size.

The device runs off a kind of battery that can be charged by USB within 2 hours and lasts for a few days with normal use. As the Bikealarm is only at development stage, Siegel hasn’t signed any agreements to put it on the market.

【1】When it senses movement, the RFID Bikealarm will _____.

    A. make a warning sound

    B. fasten the bicycle tightly

    C. shake the bicycle quickly

    D. call the police automatically

【2】Which of the following shows the right position of the RFID Bikealarm on a bicycle?

    A.   B.

    C. D.

【3】 What do we know about the RFID Bikealarm?

    A. It can’t tell between specific events.

    B. It is very difficult to use.

    C. It uses a kind of battery for power.

    D. It depends on Bluetooth technology.

【4】 It can be inferred from the last two paragraphs that ______.

    A. the electronic circuit is a little larger

    B. it’s very easy to make a Bikealarm

    C. it costs too much at present

    D. not many Bikealarms are produced
