二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Ellen Kalish runs a center for rescued wild animals in New York. When a woman asked if she could treat an owl, she was happy to help. Then, the caller told her exactly where the tiny owl was hiding out. It was the Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center in New York City! Kalish said she has been helping wild animals for 20 years, but she has never heard a story like that. The rescued owl has been nicknamed “Rockefeller”.

When workers were unwrapping the tree which just arrived, one of them spotted the creature. It was buried in the base of the tree, Kalish said. At first the worker thought the owl might be injured. It would not let go of the tree’s base. One of the workers called his wife, telling her he was bringing the owl home. He asked if she could find a place that helps wildlife animals. She called Kalish.

The owl is the smallest of its kind living in the Northeast. So how did Rockefeller end up stuck in the tree in the first place? Kalish offered a few ideas. He could have gone to the tree to hide and got trapped later, she said. Maybe once the tree was loaded onto a truck, the branches squished (挤压) him into the trunk. He might have been too scared to move.

Kalish met the woman who first called her at a gas station. The woman handed her a cardboard box with the owl inside. “He looked up at me, and I was relieved to see that he was looking in relatively good shape,” Kalish said of their first meeting. She was impressed that he didn’t look worse.

Kalish brought Rockefeller back to the wildlife center. She said she gave him plenty of water and left two mice in the plastic pet carrier. They were gone by the next morning. Rockefeller spent most of his time at the wildlife center eating or sleeping. On Monday, he went to the vet (兽医) to get some X-rays taken. He has no broken bones, Kalish added.

Rockefeller will not spend much time at the center, she said. She is preparing to release him soon. He will fly away at dusk. That’s the time when owls normally wake up. The release will be quick and quiet, she said, and she will bring a camera to take pictures of him flying away.

“I will wish him a very long and happy life,” Kalish said. “For me, it’s the Christmas miracle of 2020.”

【1】What can we learn about Ellen Kalish in Paragraph 1?

A.She is a vet in a wildlife center.

D.It was locked into the trunk of a car.

【3】How did Ellen Kalish help Rockefeller the owl?

A.She rescued him from a damaged Christmas tree.

B.She drove him back to his home in the Northeast.

C.She gave him water and food at her wildlife center.

D.She performed X-rays on the owl before releasing him.

【4】Which word best describes Rockefeller’s life in the wildlife center?

    A.Unpleasant.

    B.Comfortable.

    C.Stressful.

    D.Disappointing.

  • 22、   Inspired by a 9-year-old cyclist, Lauren Turner, who can only use one hand, a group of University of Guelph students has won an international award for their invention — a bike brake lever (刹车手柄) that pulls both the front brake and the back brake at the same time.

Lauren Tuner was able to ride her bike, but not as confidently and quickly as her friends.

“She couldn’t use the front brake. She only used the back brake, but the front brake makes you stop twice as fast,” says Micha Wallace, who, with Katie Bell, Anina Sakaguchi and Andrew Morries won second prize in the James Dyson Award for their single-handed bike brake lever.

“Lauren Turner tried the device (装置) first and she used it all last summer. She had no problems. It helped her go faster because she felt more confident in her braking abilities. She felt safer.” says Wallace.

The invention was the fourth-year design project for the four students. They designed, tested and created a prototype (模型) within a four-month period.

When Wallace heard about the James Dyson Award on the news, she and her co-inventors entered their project in the U. K. -based contest, which rewards students designers who create products that improve the way we live. The students collected the runner-up prize — £2,000 for them and £500 for their school.

As well, they had a chance to meet James Dyson, a U.K. famous inventor. Praising the students for their invention, Dyson says the single-handed brake lever could improve safety for all cyclists. By using both brakes at once, you could prevent the possibility of flying over the handlebars and ending up with an injury.

The students hope to sell it to a major company. It may be used in other devices that require two hands for operation.

1According to the passage, the James Dyson Award was named after ________.

    A. a well-known place B. a famous inventor

    C. a famous university D. a government leader

2The underlined part “the runner-up prize” in Paragraph 6 means ________.

    A. the second prize B. the rich prize

    C. the big prize D. the prize for runners

3According to the passage, we know that the brake lever ________.

    A. has already been widely used

    B. can only serve the disabled cyclists

    C. can protect you from any injuries

    D. will have a wide market in the future

4What’s the best title for the passage?

    A. Bikes Will Be Safer in the Future. B. The James Dyson Award.

    C. Student Inventors Win U.K. Prize. D. Help and Care for the Disabled.

  • 23、How Successful People Spend the Last Hour of Their Workday

As the hours of peak productivity start to decline, most of us begin watching the clock, eager to get away from our desks. But ending the workday with purpose can boost success both inside and outside of the office, which helps us to work tomorrow. 【1】

Many of us spend our last hour of work making a to-do list for tomorrow. 【2】 “The last hour of a day should be spent on reflection—the failures and successes,”says Levin, founding editor of Real Leaders. He recommends writing down the day’s wins rather than failures or to-dos, and reviewing your list of successes once a month.

The chances are that a long day of meetings and decision-making leaves you feeling completely fried by four or five o’clock. However, we still hope our last hour of work is effective and efficient. 【3】 These tasks won’t demand much brainpower, but research shows they could make a big difference to your overall productivity.

Successful people never bring the day’s failures home. Instead, they end their day by making analysis of the problems they encountered, brainstorming possible solutions. 【4】 Waking up with a purposeful goal in mind can make them feel more active to the first item that happens to them. Eventually, they will deal with those problems with renewed energy after a good night's sleep

【5】 If your day often winds down by four or five o’clock, Levin recommends taking advantage of the quiet time by checking in with yourself, it can include planning your next tasks or learning the latest content in your field.

A.And then leave them for tomorrow.

B.Thus, put them into practice as soon as possible.

C.Successful people review the day they just had, instead.

D.You have to increase your productivity to meet your deadline.

E.It's better to knock out small projects like tidying up your desk

F.We can learn how successful people spend the last hour of their workday.

G.Like regular check-ins with your boss, schedule a daily meeting with yourself.

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

In January 2020, my life wasn’t just great. I was the youngest in my amazing group of best friends, I had managed to secure 8 spot on the swim team. Then when February began, I had the best Sweet Sixteen a girl could ask for. Shortly after my birthday, my team traveled for week in Hawaii.

Little did we know we would return to chaos and a complete change of our way of life. It was March 13 and there was talk of school shutting down for two weeks. We were all excited, but on top of the news of the day, some students pulled the fire alarm and we found ourselves in the pouring rain on the wet, muddy field. About to be dismissed for what was only supposed to be a long spring break, my best friends, who I had seen practically every day, made promises to each other about how we would stay close during the lockdown.

Shortly into quarantine(隔离期), I found myself taking up hobbies like learning French, catching up on TV shows, learning piano, and doing anything I could to keep myself busy. At the time, online school was a complete joke. It was all homework because the teachers didn’t know how to teach online yet. Looking back on March 13th, I felt like a fool for thinking two weeks would be a solution to a pandemic(流行病). Months went by and the new school year began. I couldn’t wrap my head around the fact that I went from training in the pool for fifteen hours a week to zero. My desire to catch up on hobbies went away, and the pain of missing my friends came. I was in a battle for my mental and physical health.

    注意:1续写词数应为150左右。
