二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、In 1943, when I was 4, my parents moved from Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, to Fairbanks, Alaska, where adventure was never very far away.

We arrived in the summer, just in time to enjoy the midnight sun. All that sunlight was fantastic for Mum's vegetable garden. Working in the garden at midnight tended to throw her timing off, so she didn't care much about my bedtime.

Dad was a Railway Express agent and Mum was his clerk. That left me in a mess. I usually managed to find some trouble to get into. Once I had a little fire going in the dirty basement of a hotel. I had tried to light a barrel(桶) of paint but couldn't really get a good fire going. The smoke got pretty bad, though, and when I made my exit, a crowd and the police were there to greet me. The policemen took my matches and drove me home.

Mum and Dad were occupied in the garden and Dad told the police to keep me, and they did! I had a tour of the prison before Mum rescued me. I hadn't turned 5 yet.

As I entered kindergarten, the serious cold began to set in. Would it surprise you to know that I soon left part of my tongue on a metal handrail at school?

As for Leonhard Seppala, famous as a dog sledder(驾雪橇者), I think I knew him well because I was taken for a ride with his white dog team one Sunday. At the time I didn't realize what a superstar he was, but I do remember the ride well. I was wrapped(包裹) heavily and well sheltered from the freezing and blowing weather.

In 1950, we moved back to Coeur d'Alene, but we got one more Alaskan adventure when Leonhard invited us eight years later by paying a visit to Idaho to attend a gathering of former neighbours of Alaska.

【1】What can be inferred about the author's family?

A.His father was a cruel man.

B.His parents used to be very busy

    C.His parents didn't love him.

D.His mother didn't have any jobs.

【2】What happened when the author was 4?

A.He nearly caused a fire accident.

B.He was locked in a basement.

C.He was arrested by the police.

    D.He learned to smoke.

【3】Which of the following is TRUE?

A.The author spent his whole childhood in Alaska.

B.Leonhard often visited the author's family after 1950.

C.Leonhard was good at driving dog sleds.

D.The author suffered a lot while taking the dog sled in Alaska.

【4】What is the author's purpose of writing the text?

A.To express how much he misses Leonhard.

B.To describe the extreme weather of Alaska.

C.To show off his pride in making trouble

D.To look back on his childhood with adventures.

  • 22、When did you last stop to look at a tree? Really look at it , not merely notice it. Trees play such an important role in our lives and yet day to day we often don’t even notice them; we often take them for granted. Yet if you are looking to strengthen your grounds , reduce pollution around your school , improve your children’s health and wellbeing and develop your science subject , then planting trees is certainly the way forward.

The first and most obvious benefit of starting a tree-planting program is the environmental impact. Children are enthusiastic, and often highly knowledgeable about climate change and the main causes of it. They are also interested in projects that can make a difference to their community’s carbon footprints. Planting trees is an easy and long-lasting way to involve pupils and to have a positive impact on the climate.

A tree-planting program also offers teachers the opportunity to discuss biodiversity (生物多样性) and gives pupils the chance to get involved in an actual example. It’s a real-life science experiment and will provide children with amazing habitats to study in science lessons for years to come.

Planting trees can also have a positive impact on children’ s mental health. One in four people in the UK will experience mental health issues at some point in their lives and one in 10 children aged 5-16 have a diagnosable (可诊断的) mental health condition , according to The Children’s Society. Mental health is a complex issue with many causal factors and no simple solutions. However , according to the Mental Health Foundation , the opportunity to play and learn in outdoor environments has been quoted in research studies as a significantly positive influence.

Being active will also improve children’s general health and wellbeing, as well as increasing engagement more generally by providing an enjoyable context for learning. Parents and the community, too, will enjoy the improved beauty of the school grounds.

【1】What can children do to contribute to the community’s efforts to cut carbon footprints?

    A.Reduce their daily activities.

    B.Attend tree-planting projects.

    C.Learn more about climate change.

D.Encourage more people to take action.

【2】How can a tree planting program benefit teachers?

    A.By making their classes livelier.

B.By supplying them with habitats to study.

C.By providing them with real examples of biodiversity.

D.By giving them chances to communicate with students.

【3】What can we infer from Paragraph 4?

A.Outdoor activities can benefit children' s mental health.

B.Children’s playtime is reducing gradually in recent years.

C.Planting trees is a perfect way to improve the environment.

D.Few people in the UK pay much attention to mental health.

【4】What can be the best tile for the text?

A.How can schools get involved in tree-planting projects?

B.Children need more care from their teachers.

C.Why should schools be planting trees?

D.Schools should set up new classes.

  • 23、“In only six days I lost seven pounds of weight.”

“Two full inches in the first three days!”

These are the kinds of statements used in magazine, newspaper radio and television ads, promising good shapes and new looks to those who buy the medicine or the device. The promoters of products say they can shape the legs, slim the face, smooth wrinkles, or in some other way add to beauty or desirability.

Often such products are nothing more than money-making things for their promoters. The results they produce are questionable, and some are dangerous to health.

To understand how these products can be legally promoted to the public, it is necessary to understand something of the laws covering their regulation. If the product is a drug, FDA (Food Drug Administration) can require proof under the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act that it is safe and effective before it is put on the market. But if the product is a device, FDA has no authority to require premarketing proof of safety or effectiveness. If a product already on the market is a danger to health, FDA can request the producer or distributor to remove it from the market voluntarily, or it can take legal action, including seizure (查封) of the product.

One notable case a few years ago involved an electrical device called the Relaxacisor, which had been sold for reducing the waistline. The Relaxacisor produced electrical shocks to the body through contact pads. FDA took legal action against the distributor to stop the sale of the device on the grounds that was dangerous to health and life.

Obviously, most of the devices on the market have never been the subject of court proceedings (法律诉讼), and new devices appear continually, Before buying, it is up to the consumer to judge the safety or effectiveness of such items.

1It can be inferred that ads mentioned in the text are_____.

    A. objective   B. costly

    C. unbelievable   D. illegal

    2The Relaxacisor is mentioned as______.

    A. a product which was designed to produce electricity

    B. a successful advertisement of a beauty product

    C. an example of a quality beauty product

    D. a product whose distributor was involved in a legal case

    3The author intends to______.

    A. make consumers aware of the promoters’ false promise

    B. show the weakness of the law on product safety

    C. give advice on how to keep young and beautiful

    D. introduce the organization of FDA

4Which of the following is true according to the text?

    A. The court is in charge of removing dangerous products.

    B. The promoters usually just care about profits.

    C. New products are more likely to be questionable.

    D. The production of a device must be approved by FDA.

  • 24、A potato farmer, Cliff Young took part in a Sydney to Melbourne ultramarathon (超级马拉松) race in1983. Coached by his mother who was 81 at the time, Cliff Young started the marathon with work shoes and work clothes.

Competing against world-class marathon runners who were backed up by big sports companies and spent hundreds of hours preparing for the race, Cliff Young’s training method was just running after his sheep. He told the organizers he could run after his sheep for a few days and that he could surely compete with other runners.

The ultramarathon generally took 5 days to compete and this potato farmer’s decision seemed suicidal. In fact, some tried to stop him from running the super-difficult race because they thought Cliff Young could die because of the heat and fatigue(疲劳). After all, he was 61 years old!

To cut the story short, Cliff Young managed to finish the race. While the young racers slept, he continued to race throughout the night. The young athletes left him far behind until the very last night where he finally led the marathon. Not only did Cliff Young, a 61-year-old potato farmer, survive the race, but he even managed to win the marathon and actually broke the race record by 9 hours! He even gave away his prize money to the rest of the runners after him.

After the win, he continued to run in many ultramarathon races and even set standards in the world of endurance racing. His running style, named “The Young Shuffle” is a famous running technique used by many runners in the world today.

Cliff Young showed that being old is not a problem, and being a champion doesn’t mean you need to have super-human strength, just super-human will!

【1】What can we say about Cliff Young’s training?

    A.It was very informal.

    B.It was well scheduled.

    C.It was difficult for him.

    D.It was suitable for everyone.

【2】What might the underlined word “suicidal” in Paragraph 3 mean?

    A.Quite simple.

    B.Highly risky.

    C.Really surprising.

    D.Extremely reasonable.

【3】Which of the following best describes Cliff Young?

    A.Self-confident and far-sighted.

    B.Animal-loving and easy-going.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Once, when I was a teenager my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus. Finally there was only one family between us and the ticket counter.

This family made a big impression on me. There were eight children, all probably under the age of twelve. You could tell they didn’t have a lot of money. Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean, the children were well-behaved, all of them standing in line, two-by-two behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly talking about the clowns, elephants and other acts they would see that night with their brothers or sisters in a low voice. One could sense they had never been to the circus before. It promised to be a highlight of their young lives.

The father and mother were at the head of the pack, standing proud as they could be. The mother was holding her husband s hand, looking up at him as if to say, “You are my knight in shining armor.” He was smiling and responding in pride, looking back at her as if to say “You got that right”. The ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted. He proudly responded "please let me buy eight children’s tickets and two adult tickets so I can take my family to the circus.

The ticket lady gave the price. The man’s wife let go of his hand, lowered her head and her lips began to shake. The father leaned a little closer and asked, “How much did you say?” The ticket lady again told him the price. The man obviously didn’t have enough money.

How was he supposed to turn and tell his eight children that he didn’t have enough money to take them to the circus? Actually we were not wealthy in any sense, so I understand how the kids would feel. I felt sorry for them.
