  • 21、Some Amazing Places around the World to Daydream

Here are some amazing places around the world to daydream about and look forward to visiting one day in the future.

    Lord Howe Island, Australia

The island in the Tasman Sea lies between Australia and New Zealand. The number of tourists is not allowed to be over 400. It’s known for many birds, plants and marine life.

Lord Howe Island Group, the collective name for the mainland and the nearby islands, has been regarded a World Heritage Site of global national importance, thanks to the fact that its plants and animals are found nowhere else.

Keahiakawelo (Garden of the Gods), Hawaii

Don’t try to attempt to reach Keahiakawelo, on Lanai Island. The Mars-like landscape gets its nickname from Alexander Ford, who visited in 1912 for an article and compared the place to the Garden of the Gods.

Hawaiians call Keahiakawelo “wahi pana”, which means legendary places which have cultural significance. As legend goes, the priest of neighboring island, a man named Lanikaula, was angry at the people of Lanai, so he lit a fire wishing ill will to the island’s people.

Balamku (Cave of the Jaguar God), Mexico

Re-discovered in 2018, the cave was discovered accidentally by archaeologists who were searching for a sacred well.

Located in the ancient Maya city, the cave was initially discovered in 1966 but was sealed up and forgotten about. The cave is so unexplored, that archaeologists are still mapping it out, and have only been into the first 450 meters of the cave.

    Lençóis, Brazil

This protected area on Brazil’s north Atlantic coast is known for its vast desert landscape of towering white sand piles and seasonal rainwater lakes.

Although the rolling sand piles look like they belong to a dry desert, the area gets around 47 inches of rain a year and is flooded with rainstorms which form crystal clear rivers reaching up to 10 feet deep, making them a great spot for swimming.

  • 22、   When the first women to be admitted to Y ale arrived on campus 50 years ago,it had little idea how to support them at a place that was the oldest all-male college in the country.

Sixty-five percent of them had a class in which they were the only woman, according to an unpublished survey, conducted this year,of nearly half of the 575 female freshmen who entered Yale in 1969.Women weren’t permitted to have lunch at Mory’s,a dining club where important meetings took place. They were kept from most after-class activities.

Yale had been set up to educate“1,000 male leaders”and male students were selected on the basis of their future leadership. But women weren’t expected to be leaders.Instead, they were mainly evaluated(评估)on grit.

“It is a kind of determination,a pioneer quality,”Henry Chauncey, one of the Yale teachers, told The New York Times in 1969,“How to find the gritty women?Admit those who were raised with brothers—the more the better!”

“We had grit. But that doesn’t mean it wasn’t challenging because Yale wasn’t entirely prepared for us,”said Sally Birdsall, who was the only female in the economy class. She remembers that a professor warned her that he did not want to hear knitting needles(织针)in his class.

    “I was upset,not because I had a knitting needle,but I was more scared,”she said.“It just gave me a very unwelcome feeling.”

In their post-college achievements, they were unusual among American women of their age,and faced challenges that have become familiar to highly educated women today:how to achieve educational, job and family goals when they’re all running on the same clock with men.

Eighty-two percent of the surveyed women had children, and their average age of first birth was 33.The national average at the time was 21.

Their experiences show how much has changed in 50 years—and how much has not.

1Which of the following can replace the underlined word“gritty”in paragraph 4

    A.Pretty. B.Determined. C.Talented. D.Happy.

C.They were expected to achieve higher goals.

D.They suffered unfair treatment in the university.

  • 23、The Voice Magazine recently had a chance to chat with Miss Patel, a 21-year-old university student currently living in Edmonton, Alberta. “Honestly, I am not happy with Edmonton because it’s too dead. No one socializes. Everybody likes to stay as it is. Personally, I haven’t found one person who likes to grow in their life. People in Edmonton seem to settle for whatever they get.”

When asked how she best studies, Miss Patel stated, “I was a kid who always took studies for granted. Till one day I realized it’s the most important thing. What keeps me motivated is my goal and the promises I have made to myself. I am completely focused on my career and studies, because believe it or not, hanging out with friends is a distraction.”

And her advice for new students? “Online universities and studies can be very overwhelming. You know, there is too much stuff out there. You may miss out on 90 percent of stuff you really need. But join online groups, call the student center and ask tons of questions. Go through every detail provided in the course. Make a schedule by what time you will finish the course.”

When not studying, Miss Patel is interested in “spirituality-gaining knowledge of nature, how to be the best version of yourself.” She continued, “I hit the gym quite often as well.”

When asked which famous person she would like to have lunch with and why, Miss Patel did not have any famous person in mind. She explained, “The respectful famous leads today were once a common man or woman. I would in fact love to just go on a special elite (精英) lunch with myself. I sit with myself and feel every emotion, making a list of my flaws and my positive characteristics. That way I am just getting a step forward of being a better human being. And who knows my betterment can lead me into being famous just like others!”

【1】What can we infer about Miss Patel from the first paragraph?

B.The learner has to ask tons of questions.

C.It is difficult to make a schedule of the course.

【4】Why would Miss Patel have lunch with herself rather than a famous person?

A.She regard herself as a famous person.

B.Famous leads are common men or women.

C.She can reflect on herself and make improvement.

D.She can list the flaws and positive part of famous people.

  • 24、My parents knew their wealth: each other, their six children, and their faith. They tried to live simple lives so that they could have time for what was most important.

They didn’t busy themselves buying a bigger house, because that would mean working harder to pay the monthly mortgage(按揭贷款),working overtime or taking second job. Who would go running with me then? Who would read stories to me?

They didn’t burden themselves with buying an expensive car because that would mean worrying about installment(分期付款) bills. Besides, walking to the shopping centre every Saturday afternoon with me gave my dad his needed exercise, and made me feel so special.

One of my heart’s delights was seeing Dad and Mom in their bedroom at night, after our nightly family prayer. The lights were turned off, and I’d see the figure of my father seated on his old chair and Mom standing behind him, gently massaging(按摩) his shoulders. I’d hear them talk about what happened during their day. Even as a child, I sensed their quiet pleasure in being together.

My question today: Could they have done this rich ritual(仪式) each night and nourished(滋润) their marriage if they had been busy paying for expensive clothes for themselves or their kids, or if they had been worrying about monthly bills for new hi-tech equipment? I don’t think so. And I’ve made a choice: I don’t want that of life either.

【1】Which of the following is TRUE about the author’s family?

    A. There were six people in the family.

    B. They decided to buy a bigger house.

    C. They lived an easy and happy life.

    D. They had a second-hand car.

2What did the parents regularly do with the author?

    A. They wrote stories together.

    B. They read newspapers together.

    C. They regularly took exercise together.

    D. They went shopping together each day.

3 The author believed that his/her parents’ happiness was due to(由于, 归功于)

    A. their attitude towards life

    B. their love for each other

    C. their common interests

    D. their ability to communicate with each other

4 It can be inferred from the last paragraph that the author __________.

    A. got bored with his/her parents’ way of educating kids

    B. was influenced by his/her parents’ lifestyle

    C. didn’t want to follow his/her parents’ advice

    D. didn’t want to live the same life as his/her parents
