21、Chelesa Fearce had a secret that her classmates didn't know. A secret that could not defeat her. A secret that she was ready to reveal on graduation day: she was homeless.
Today, six years later, her story of perseverance continues, from a teenager studying by the stove light at motels to Spelman College graduate and medical researcher now starting Yale Medical School.
“Homelessness taught me how to work hard, always persevere and never let anything get in my way,” Fearce said recently.
The 23-year-old girl made national news in 2013 with her story of success over a difficult situation. Her academic success landed her a full scholarship to Spelman, where she graduated in 2017 with a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry. She has worked full-time for the past two years at the National Institutes for Health in Bethesda, Maryland, doing research on drugs. And this month, Fearce starts Yale Medical School with a full scholarship to cover living expenses. She expects to be at the Ivy League school for eight years and to graduate with her doctorate and a medical degree. Her longtime goal is a career in psychiatry(精神病学).
Fearce's story is kept alive on the home front by the Clayton County school system. In her name, the system annually awards scholarships to local homeless students with good academic records. The scholarships of $250 to $1,000 come from donations collected in the whole country, which ranked first in the state in 2016—2017 in student homelessness with about 2,700 students.
Hearing about her helps "the students know what is possible," said Jacqueline Evans, which deals with the problem of student homelessness. “Sometimes, you have to see somebody else to know it can happen to you.”

22、An international team of researchers from Sweden and the UK have developed an innovative way of interpreting biological signals produced by our skin. Using data obtained from a Philips wrist-worn wearable sensor device that can also measure movement, the researchers’ system displays information in the form of colourful spiral graphics (螺旋图形) in real time on a smartphone, as well as a recording of data, for the wearer to interpret and reflect on.
The prototype (雏形) visualisation system, called ‘Affective Health’, was developed by experts in Human-Computer Interaction looking into how new and emerging computer technologies can be used to design engaging visualisations on smartphones.
A study group of 23 people were given the Affective Health prototype to use for a month. Importantly, the researchers purposely did not tell the participants what the devices were useful for. Instead, they gave guidelines that Affective Health could collect information relating to both physical and emotional reactions, how increased sweating increased the conductivity, and how this was represented by different colours. The participants were left to decide the best ways of using the technology.
The researchers found that this open design stage of the study led to some participants using the system as a tool to measure and help manage their stress levels. While others, including outstanding athletes, used the device to get information on their training and recovery programmes. Other uses included logging information on their lives and tracking emotions. But interestingly, few would use the technology for more than one purpose.
Although the open design phase helped reveal several different practices Affective Health prototypes could be used for, the prototype lacked some of the functions needed to make it a good tool for a specific role—such as a sports training system, or as a stress management tool. The researchers found the need for a second, more tailored step in the design process to make devices specific to particular roles.
【1】What were the participants unaware of about the prototype?
A.Its function as a measuring tool.
B.Its reactions to physical activity.
C.Its colourful spiral graphics.
D.Its specified uses.
【2】What interested the researchers?
A.People used the device quite differently.

D.Technologies Interpret Biodata from the Skin
23、Many teenagers feel that the most important people in their lives are their friends. They believe that their family members, especially their parents, don't know them as well their friends do. In large families, it is often for brothers and sisters to fight with each other and then they can only go to their friends for advice. It is very important for teenagers to have one good friend or many friends.
Even when they are not with their friends, they usually spend a lot of time talking among themselves on the phone. This communication is very important in children's growing up, because friend can discuss something difficult to say to their family members.
However, parents often try to choose their children's friends for them. Some parents may even stop their children from meeting their good friends. The question of "choice" is an interesting one. Have you ever thought of the following questions: Who choose your friends? Do you choose your friends or your friends choose you? Have you got a good friend your parents don't like?
【1】Many teenagers think their________ know them better than their parents do.
A.friends
B.teachers
C.brothers and sisters

24、New York City, the birthplace of hip-hop music, is thousands of kilometers away and, culturally, very different from northeastern Thailand. But for Thai rapper RachYo, the language of hip hop is universal.
The 18-year-old artist appears in a recent music video recorded in a rice field. RachYb is sitting on an old truck, rapping about trouble in a love relationship. The video has 57 million views on YouTube. "I rap about things that really happen to me," said RachYb. Based in Thailand's Nakhon Ratchasima province, the rapper says he mostly sings about girls.
The rising popularity of hip hop in Thailand has created stars that have drawn the attention of music industry leaders. Def Jam Recordings, a label of the world's three major music corporations, produces and publishes the work of some of the most popular hip-hop artists in the United States, including Rihanna, Chainz and Kanye West. Last year it opened offices in Thailand and Singapore. One of the first artists the company employed after expanding there was Thai rapper DaBoyWay, who has one million followers on the social media service Instagram, and is releasing a new album on Monday. Def Jam has also made agreements with five others from Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia.
Paul Sirisant heads the label's operations in Bangkok. He says Def Jam plans to employ four more Thai artists this year. Thai artists stand out from others in Southeast Asia because the language already includes sounds that rhyme in daily speech. So rapping in Thai sounds natural. The music has spread outside the nation's major cities.
Production agreements, or record deals, are the dream for many artists, but not for RachYo. His recent video Nok, the Thai word for bird, received 80 million YouTube views, more than Thailand's population of nearly 70 million. He says he raps to express himself but he is not interested in a record deal with a label. "I like being home, in the country. I don't really like to go anywhere/5 he said.

26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
Not setting homework can be impossible in certain situations. There are many arguments for homework, and most teachers would agree with many of the following: homework is a perfect opportunity to review what was done with the teacher, and rethink and develop that initial input; homework offers a moment for students to work as individuals and develop self-governance outside the classroom; students and parents expect homework to be set and graded. Nevertheless, the drawbacks homework may have are often overlooked.
There are two key issues which need to be raised when dealing with the concept of homework. Firstly, there is the question of home. Often homework is not done at home at all, but at a friend’s house, on the way back home or to class. Additionally, for it to be done effectively at home, homework often requires adults’ involvement. Parents aren’t always available, for some very valid reasons, and a tutor’s ability to aid and guide may be limited in many ways. The implications are unsettling: if homework is crucial to success in class, some children have an automatic disability.
If the idea of “home” can be problematic, so can the concept of “work”. Very often there is so much to do. Demand on their time means homework is usually something to get out of the way as fast as possible. It is not always seen as useful time spent strengthening what is done in class but, rather, as something quickly finished. It might be correct or not, copied from a friend or cut and pasted from the Internet, but the important thing is that a teacher sees the exercise completed and, as a result, the task achieved: how much effort went into that result is not always appreciated or easy to evaluate and, even when work clearly falls below standard, and the mere fact of its having been done is often good enough. Teacher and students are happy because everyone has officially fulfilled their commitment.
The ideal that students go home, review what they did with their teacher, use the great resources to put everything they have learnt in class into practice, doesn’t often happen with some students.
