二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Simpson is 53, “not sporty” and has suffered from asthma all her life. Two years ago her son Jay, now 10, took up BMX(自行车越野赛). “I enjoyed watching him and thought I’d like to try it,” Simpson recalls. “But I didn’t want to embarrass myself. I hadn’t ridden for over 40 years.”

Then she noticed a session for women and girls at Burgess Park BMX Track in Peckham, south-east London, where Jay trained. This season Simpson raced at the London BMX series and finished third in her category.

“It was the most worrying experience of my life. But it was also exhilarating,” she says cheerfully. “My son is proud of me. We now share a real love for the sport. It has brought us closer together.”

Since becoming part of the Olympic Games in 2008, the popularity of BMX has risen. A program introduced in London in 2011 by the sports development charity Access Sport has seen tracks built in several London regions, backed up with investment in coaching, and the program is being rolled out to Bristol.

Wright’s children Skye, 11 and Xander, 10 are sponsored riders who have represented Great Britain in every world championship since 2014. Wright says she was motivated to start BMX herself out of an interest aroused by watching so much of it. “It’s an eye-opener to share your children’s interests,” she explains. “You comprehend what they go through in a much more direct way. It adds another dimension to your relationship.”

It is also a high-impact sport and the risks are fairly obvious. “I totally get the fear,” says Emma, 51, a BMX exercise coach and cycling instructor. “It’s the fear of doing something new, of getting hurt. But I say ‘Come and give it a try.’ The chance of having an accident is slim, and you can spend time on the flat to improve your confidence.”

1What can we learn about Simpson from the first two paragraphs?

    A. She tended to be inactive.

    B. She performed poorly in the race.

    C. She used to feel awkward in public.

    D. She trained at Burgess Park BMX Track.

2What does the underlined word “exhilarating” in Paragraph 3 mean?

    A. Annoying. B. Convincing.

    C. Thrilling. D. Challenging.

3What benefit did Simpson and Wright get from BMX?

    A. More life skills.

    B. Stronger will.

    C. More confidence in themselves.

    D. Better parent-child relationship.

4What does Emma think of BMX?

    A. Risky but actually secure. B. Demanding but open to all.

    C. Competitive but instructive. D. Pleasant but time-consuming.

  • 22、Astronaut(宇航员)Scott Kelly has been living on the International Space Station(ISS)since March 28, 2015. And just like any other home, the ISS requires some housekeeping, in the form of regular work and repairs.

That is why Kelly and his partner Kjell Lindgren performed activities, outside the station on Wednesday. The operation began at 8:03 am and lasted for more than seven hours. It was the first spacewalk for both men.

The ISS has been in continual use for 15 years, and has hosted over 200 people, including astronauts and private tourists. During their activities, Kelly and Lindgren did basic electrical work, such as attaching new wires that will provide power to docking ports(舱门)on the station. The ports will be used when other people arrive at the ISS. Also, the two astronauts fixed a thermal(防寒的)cover on a key scientific instrument on the station to protect it from the freezing temperatures of space.

As the more senior astronaut, Kelly led the spacewalk. However, Lindgren dealt with some of the more challenging parts of the job as he has longer arms than Kelly.

During a spacewalk, the simplest work becomes a difficult task. Kelly and Lindgren spent months training and practicing for the operation. The preparation began in NASA's Neutral Buoyancy Lab(NBL). Here astronauts are made to work in an environment similar to the one outside the space station.

Even getting the space suits ready can take days. While each suit is built to fit the astronaut perfectly who will wear it, adjustments(调整)need to be made right up to the time when the spacewalk begins. The adjustments address any change in the astronauts' bodies that have occurred as a result of being in a gravity-free environment.

【1】Why did Kelly and Lindgren take the spacewalk?

    A.To clean up the ISS.

B.To keep the ISS in good condition.

C.To test their new space suits.

D.To carry out a scientific experiment.

【2】What is the main idea of the third paragraph?

A.How the ISS is working properly.

B.Why the docking ports are useful.

C.How the astronauts performed the spacewalk.

D.What the two astronauts did in the spacewalk.

【3】Why did Kjell Lindgren do more challenging work than Kelly during the spacewalk?

A.He knew more about the station.

B.He was the leader of the team.

    C.He had a longer reach.

D.He had more experience of spacewalk

【4】What does the underlined word "address" in the last paragraph mean?

    A.Lead to.

    B.Belong to.

    C.Interact with.

    D.Deal with

  • 23、About a million years ago a small mutation (突变) might have unlocked a big advantage for ancient humans. A recent study in Science Advances suggests that a variant of a critical stretch of DNA called the growth hormone receptor (激素受体) gene protected against starvation—in part by limiting individuals’ body size during periods of resource scarcity.

Previous research had linked the variant, called GHRd3, to characteristics such as smaller birth size and earlier sexual maturity, as well as other qualities that can benefit organisms when food is scarce, says the study’s lead author Omer Gokcumen from the University at Buffalo. Still, researchers wanted to know more precisely what role the mutation played in human evolution.

To dig deeper, Gokcumen and his colleagues turned to mice. Or rather they turned some mice into analogues (类似物) of early humans. Using the genetic editing tool CRISPR-Cas9, the team deleted a section of mice’s growth hormone receptor gene so it resembled the GHRd3 variant. The modified mice were not especially different from ordinary ones when fed a regular diet. But when fed very little, the male carriers grew up to be smaller than their unmodified counterparts. Gokcumen’s team also found that among a group of 176 modern human children who survived malnutrition, symptoms were less severe in boys and girls with GHRd3.

These findings could help explain why GHRd3 has persisted for so long. Perhaps it paid to be small in times of scarcity, the researchers suppose—but in times of abundance large size won out.   Changes in available resources could then have balanced the costs and benefits of different variants within a population. “It’s a trade-off,” Gokcumen says. “I would probably fare better than Arnold Schwarzenegger if we each had 1,000 calories a day.”

The team’s explanation is “plausible”, says Megan Dennis, a geneticist at the University of California, who was not part of the study. She praises the functional experiments in mice but notes that the affected gene is involved in so many fundamental processes that it is difficult to pin down GHRd3’s most adaptive effects. “I was like, ‘Wow, there’s so much that could be happening here,’” Dennis says.

【1】What can we learn about GHRd3?

A.It may decline as a result of resource limitations.

B.It performs its function when animals’ size is small.

C.It can be modified to limit animals’ size to fight starvation.

D.It is a shortened version of the growth hormone receptor gene.

【2】Which of the following statements might Gokcumen’s team agree with?

A.When there is little food, it pays to be small.

    B.When food is insufficient, GHRd3 won’t work.

C.When you go on a diet, GHRd3 can be harmful.

D.When humans fight for resources, their size matters.

【3】What does the underlined word “plausible” mean in the last paragraph?

    A.Statistically incredible.

    B.Relatively conventional.

    C.Technically adequate.

    D.Seemingly reasonable.

【4】Which of the following could be the best title of this text?

    A.How Ancient Humans Survived Starvation

B.Gene Variant Saves Humans from Starvation

C.What Role GHRd3 Plays in Human Evolution

D.The Influence of Resource Shortage on GHRd3

  • 24、Dogs can tell how other dogs are feeling from the way their tails are wagging(摇摆),according to researchers who monitored the animals’ heart rate as they watched dogs’ movies. The Italian team found that dogs had higher heart rates and became more anxious when they saw others wag their tails more to the left, but not when they wagged more to the right, or failed to wag at all.

The curious form of communication is probably not intentional, or consciously understood, but is instead an automatic behavior that arises from the structure of the brain, said Giorgio. “It’s not something they clearly and exactly understand,” Giorgio told The Guardian. “It’s just something that happens to them.”

Giorgio traces the effect back to the way the two halves of the brain process different experiences. In a previous study, his team showed that when a dog had a positive experience, activity rose in the left side of the brain, bringing about more tail wagging to the right. Or else more tail wagging to the left. The effect is barely visible to the human eye because dogs tend to wag their tails too fast, but it can be seen with slow motion video, or in some larger types.

In the latest study, the researchers wanted to find out whether the direction of tail wagging had any effect on other dogs. To get an answer, they fitted dogs with vests that recorded their heart rates, and played them movies of other dogs wagging their tails one way and then the other. To ensure the dogs reacted only to tail wagging, and not appearance? they repeated the experiment with dogs that appeared only as shadows.

“When dogs saw other dogs wagging their tails to the right, there was quite a relaxed reaction and no evidence of an increased heart rate. But when the wagging was to the left we saw an increase in heart rate and a series of behaviors typically associated with stress, anxiety and being more watchful, “Giorgio said. The anxious animals held their ears up, breathed, and kept their eyes wide open. The study appears in the latest issue of Current Biology.

1What does the text focus on?

    A. Animal protection.   B. Animal welfare.

    C. Animal tests.   D. Animal psychology.

2What leads to dogs’ wagging tail to the left or right according to Giorgio?

    A. Their automatic behavior.   B. Their conscious response.

    C. Their increasing heart rate.   D. Their selective preference.

3At what time do dogs have more tail wagging to the right?

    A. When they run quickly.   B. When they feel hungry.

    C. When they play with their owners.   D. When they feel stressed.

4What may be the best title for the text?

    A. How dogs communicate with each other

    B. Some reasons why dogs feel seriously anxious

    C. Dogs’ different behaviors in different situations

    D. Dogs’ communicating ways of tail wagging
