二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、        In early autumn I applied for admission to college. I wanted to go nowhere but to Cornell University, but my mother fought strongly against it. When she saw me studying a photograph of my father on the sports ground of Cornell, she tore it up.

“You can’t say it’s not a great university, just because Papa went there.”

“That’s not it at all. And it is a top university.” She was still holding the pieces in her hand. “But we can’t afford to send you to college.”

“I wouldn’t dream of asking you for money. Do you want me to get a job to help support you and Papa? Things aren’t that bad, are they?”

“No,” she said. “I don’t expect you to help support us.”

Father borrowed money form his rich cousins to start a small jewellery shop. His chief customers were his old college friends. To get new customers, my mother had to help. She picked up a long-forgotten membership in the local league of women, so that she could get to know more people. Whether those people would turn into customers was another question. I knew that my Parents had to wait for quite a long time before their small investment could show returns. What’s more, they had not wanted enough to be rich and successful. Otherwise they could not possibly have managed their lives so badly.

I was torn between the desire to help them and change their lives, and the determination not to repeat their mistakes. I had a strong belief in my power to go what I wanted. After months of hard studying, I won a full college scholarship. My father could hardly contain his pride in me, and my mother eventually gave in before my success.

  • 22、American Brian Linden first came to China at the end of August 1984. That month of this year, the 61-year-old man visited his hometown, Chicago. But wherever he is, Linden always holds China in his heart as his “spiritual homeland”.

His plans for September were to deliver lectures with a focus on China, before returning to Xizhou town in Dali, Yunnan to oversee the operation of the Linden Center — his namesake hotel brand and cultural exchange center founded in 2008. “The initial intention behind establishing the Linden Center was to build a bridge for cultural exchanges between China and the world,” says Linden. “What China has accomplished in 40 years is a miracle. I want to tella better story of China to the world. ”

Before coming to China, he was a part-time night school college student, who cleaned carpets for a living. One day, he went to clean the carpet of an instructor who had just returned from China. He was captivated by the teacher’s amazing stories about China. Soon after, he saw a poster announcing scholarships to study overseas in China and applied. “It changed my life,” he says.

While undertaking graduate studies at Nanjing University, he met his wife Jeanee, a Chinese-American woman. The couple took train journeys across the country with their sons, not only exploring China’s beautiful landscapes but also feeling the people’s warmth and kindness.China has given so much to Linden that he, in turn, wanted to contribute to China’s growth and promote the country to the outside world.

Linden’s team transformed the courtard into a hotel according to the principle of “preserving the old as it was”, conserving the ethnic Bai architecture, layout (布局), and wooden carvings. International visitors not only booked guestrooms at the center but also explored the surrounding Bai villages under the guidance of its staff. Linden hopes to go beyond enhancing global understanding of China in general to boosting people-to-people exchanges with the US in particular.

【1】Why did Linden set up the Linden Center?

A.To make a big fortune in China.

B.To achieve his wife’s and sons’ dreams.

  • 23、   Time spent in a bookshop can be most enjoyable, whether you are a book-lover or merely go there to buy a book as a present. You may even have entered the shop just to find shelter from a sudden shower. Whatever the reason, you can soon become totally unaware of your surroundings.

The desire to pick up a book with an attractive dust jacket is irresistible, although this method of selection ought not to be followed, as you might end up with a rather dull book.

You soon become interested in some book or other, and usually it is only much later that you realize you have spent far too much time there and must dash off to keep some forgotten appointment—without buying a book, of course.

This opportunity to escape the realities of everyday life is, I think, the main attraction of a bookshop. There are not many places where it is possible to do this. A music shop is very much like a bookshop. You can wander round such places to your heart’s content. If it is a good shop, no assistant will approach you with the inevitable greeting: “Can I help you, sir?” You needn’t buy anything you don’t want. In a bookshop an assistant should remain in the background until you have finished browsing. Then and only then, are his services necessary. Of course, you may want to find out where a particular section is, but when he has led you there, the assistant should retire discreetly and look as if he is not interested in selling a single book.

You have to be careful not to be attracted by the variety of books in a bookshop. It is very easy to enter the shop looking for a book on, say ancient coins and come out carrying a copy of the latest best-selling novel and perhaps a book about brass-rubbing-something which had only slightly interested you up till then. This volume of the subject, however, happened to be so well illustrated and the part of the text you read proved so interesting that you just had to buy it. This sort of thing can be very dangerous. Apart from running up a huge account, you can waste a great deal of time wandering from section to section.

1The underlined phrase “dust jacket” means_______.

A.a kind of clothes B.a paper cover of book

C.a dusty book D.a title of a book

2You may spend too much time in a bookshop because_______.

A.the dust jackets are very attractive

B.you start reading one of the books

    C.it is raining outside

D.you have to make sure you won’t buy a dull book as a present

    3In a good bookshop_______.

A.all the books there are interesting B.the assistant greets you in a warm way

C.your heart is satisfied D.you feel that you are in a music shop

4The best title for this passage may be_____.

A.The Attraction of Bookshops B.How to Spend Your Time

C.Bookshops and Their Assistants D.How to select Books?

  • 24、   Almost everyone wants to be happy, but not all know how to find happiness. Money and success alone do not bring lasting happiness. Aristotle (亚里士多德), a Greek think, said, “Happiness depends upon ourselves.” In other words, we make our own happiness. Here are a few suggestions to help you be happier.

The first secret of happiness is to enjoy the simple things in life. Too often, we spend so much time thinking about the future that we fail to enjoy the present, for example, getting into college or getting a good job. You should enjoy life’s simple pleasures, such as reading a good book, listening to your favorite music, or spending time with close friends. People who have several close friends often live happier and healthier lives.

Another secret to living a happy life is to be active, and have hobbies where you forget your problems and time. Many people experience dancing, or playing a sport, such as swimming. You can forget about your problems and only think about the activity.

Finally, many people find happiness in helping others. Studies show that people feel good when they spend their time helping others. If you want to feel happier, do good things for someone. You can help a friend with his or her studies, go shopping to buy food for an elderly person, or simply help out around the house by washing the dishes.

1The best title of this passage is ________.

    A. Good Friends Make You Happy B. Money Makes You Happy

    C. The Secret of Happiness D. Ideas for Helping Other People to Be Happy

2The passage gives us ________ pieces of advice on happiness.

    A. one B. two

    C. three D. four

    3The writer thinks that ________.

    A. It’s wrong to spend time on work

    B. hobbies take up too much time

    C. everyone knows how to live a happier life.

    D. doing good things for someone can make you happier.

4Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?

    A. Reading a good book. B. Traveling to a foreign country.

    C. Playing a sport. D. Spending time with close friends.

  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

In 2004, my husband, Joe and I worked in a design company in Arizona. One day, when we got back home after work, my ten-year-old daughter, Becky and Joe were united in their desire for a dog. As for me, I shared none of theirs.

But why, they pleaded(恳求). “Because I don’t have time to take care of a dog.” “But we’ll do it.” “Really? You’re going to walk the dog? Feed the dog? Bathe the dog?” “Yes, yes, and yes. ” “I don’t believe you.” “We will. We promise.”

They didn’t. Everyone wanted to walk the cute dog that first day. From day two, neither thought to walk the dog. While I was slow to accept that I would be the one to keep track of her shots, to feed and clean her, Misty knew this on day one. As she looked up at the three new humans in her life, she calculated, “The medium one is the most reliable.”

Quickly, she and I developed something very similar to a Vulcan mind meld(心灵相通). She’d look at me with those sad brown eyes of hers, send her need, and then wait, trusting I would understand—which, strangely, I almost always did. In no time, she would extend across my stomach as I watched television, and snored on my home-office couch as I worked on my design.

Even so, part of me continued to reject walking duty, Joe and Becky had promised. “Not fair”, I said to myself as she and I walked. “Not fair,” I’d loudly remind anyone within earshot upon our return home.

In September, 2008, the Great Depression hit the Arizona. With that, my husband and I were both laid off overnight. During the following six months, Joe and I hurriedly rushed here and there to seek a new job, doing anything and everything we could to request employment. Every part of my life changed; no part of my old routine remained. However, Misty still needed walking.
