二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   In the past 50 years, the amount of water in the open ocean with zero oxygen has increased more than four times. In coastal water bodies, including the river mouth and seas, low-oxygen sites have increased more than 10 times since 1950. Scientists expect oxygen to continue dropping even outside these zones as the Earth warms. To stop the decline, the world needs to control in both climate change and nutrient pollution.

Oxygen is a must to life in the oceans. The drop in ocean oxygen is among the most serious effects of human activities on the Earth’s environment.

This is the first time for the scientists to take such a deep look at the causes, consequences and solutions to low oxygen worldwide, in both the open ocean and in coastal waters. About half of the oxygen on the Earth comes from the ocean. However, combined effects of nutrient loading and climate change are greatly increasing the number and size of “dead zones”in the open ocean and coastal waters, where oxygen is too low to support most sea life.

In areas traditionally called “dead zones”, like those in Chesapeake Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, oxygen drops to levels so low that many animals have trouble in breathing and die. As fish run away from these zones, their living areas become smaller and smaller. But the problem goes far beyond “dead zones”. Even smaller oxygen drops can hold up the growth in animals, reproduction and lead to disease or even death. Low oxygen also can cause the release of dangerous chemicals. While some animals can thrive in dead zones, overall biodiversity falls.

1What does the underlined word “decline” mean ?

    A.Increase. B.Drop. C.Keep. D.Double.

2How much oxygen on the Earth comes from the ocean?

    A.10%. B.25%. C.40%. D.50%.

3Why are these waters called “dead zones”?

A.The oxygen in these areas is too low for the animals to live.

B.Ships are easy to break down and sink in these areas.

C.There are no animals living in these areas.

D.Many people died in these areas.

4Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A.All animals living in the sea need oxygen.

B.Climate change can help cut down the dead zone.

C.Fish grow faster and better in low oxygen area.

D.Human activities have many bad effects on environment.

5What is the main idea of this passage?

A.Dead zone in water is becoming larger.

B.Oxygen in water is necessary for sea animals.

C.The drop in ocean oxygen causes bad effects.

D.Low oxygen can cause the release of dangerous gas.

[1] Fingerboards, known as “Tech Decks”, are miniature replicas (微型复制品) of a skateboard. Fingerboarding is in short, when somebody “rides” a fingerboard with fingers.

[2] Typically riding with their middle and index fingers, people perform tricks replicated from skateboarding. 10 cm long and 25 to 34 mm wide, the deck has grip tape on top and trucks with wheels fixed to the bottom of it, allowing it to roll. In a way, fingerboarding is making it possible to mimic the same tricks you did when skateboarding but at your desk this time.

[3] The first fingerboards were little “DIY” boards created by skaters as toys in the 1980s, when they were made of wood, tubes and other materials. Later on, the miniature boards were seen more as keychain attachments (挂饰). However, it wasn’t long before the fingerboarding scene picked up in popularity and became a bigger part of the skateboarding industry in the 1990s.

[4] The “barely rideable” keychain attachments were improved by the producer “Tech Deck”, which started producing a more rideable version of the fingerboard in the 1990s. Soon they began to print actual skateboard patterns onto the fingerboard decks, which made them even more appealing to skateboarders. In the late 1990s, fancy fingerboards with “actual professional skateboard patterns” started to enter more and more toy shops, and before we knew it fingerboards were seen everywhere.

[5] The development did not stop there. In the past decades, the fingerboard scene has become more and more advanced, especially when it comes to the quality of the boards and the skills of the riders. Now, fingerboarding has spread out to various social media platforms, where “riders” continuously outdo themselves with more advanced tricks.

[6] Fingerboarding eventually evolved from a “hobby toy”, to a lifestyle for some – competing in Championships and various events around the world.

  • 23、   A warm drink of milk before bed has long been the best choice for those wanting a good night’s sleep. But now a study has found it really does help people nod off — if it is milked from a cow at night.

Researchers have discovered that “night milk” contains more melatonin (褪黑激素), which has been proven to help people feel sleepy and reduce anxiety.

The study, by researchers from Seoul, South Korea, involved mice being fed with dried milk powder made from cows milked both during the day and at night.

Those given night milk, which contained 10 times the amount of melatonin, were less active and less anxious than those fed with the milk collected during daytime, according to the study published in The Journal of Medicinal Food.

Night milk quickened the start of sleep and caused the mice to sleep longer.

While the effect of cows milk harvested at different time has not been tested on humans up to now, taking melatonin drugs has been suggested to those who are struggling to fall asleep at night.

Previous studies have also indicated that milk can be excellent for helping sleep because of the calcium content, which helps people to relax.

Milk is also sugar-free and additive-free with nutritionists recommending skimmed milk as the best choice before bed as it is the least fattening. The more fat you take in before bedtime, the greater burden you will put on your body at night.

1Which of the following is true of melatonin according to the text?

A.It’s been tested on mice for ten times. B.It can make people more energetic.

C.It exists in milk in great amount. D.It’s used in sleeping drugs.

2What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.Night Milk and Sleep B.Fat, Sugar and Health

C.An Experiment on Mice D.Milk Drinking and Health

3How does the author support the theme of the text?

A.By giving examples. B.By stating arguments.

C.By explaining statistical data. D.By providing research results.

  • 24、Thomas Mayfield had a major problem to solve in his fifth-grade classroom.

“I’m not good at adding. I don’t know how to regroup or borrow. I’m not good at subtracting (减法). Or I don’ t know my facts yet, and I’ m a fifth-grader, ” Mayfield’ s students used to tell him. The 42-year-old maths teacher from Fort Worth, Texas, knew it was important to try something new, especially because most of his students were also struggling outside of the classroom. “Single parent homes, parents put in prison, low financial stability-a lot of misfortunes that were going on, ” he said.

To reach students in a way that was familiar and inviting, he brought rap music to the classroom. Mayfield played an instrumental beat to a rap song. He got his students excited. Then they started to rap about decimal(十进位)point places. “Let’ s start with the tenths. Like a dime to a dollar, there’s 1 out of 10. Then we move to the hundredths, one part out of many. One out of 100, we call that a penny. . . “ rapped Mayfield and students.

Pareece Morehouse, one of Mayfield’s former students, is now in tenth grade and loves old-school rap. Before Mr. Mayfield’s class, Morehouse didn’t like maths and struggled with it. But pairing the difficult subject with music was game-changing for her.

“I can recall myself at home doing homework and just singing the song in my head, helping me understand, ” Morehouse said. “It was really a great way to help me make it through maths. ”

“Students will produce work if you reach them where they are and take notes on what they’re interested in, whether that’s music, art or sports. It’s important to use things that resonate (共鸣)with them, ” said Mayfield.

【1】What led Thomas Mayfield to try something new in his teaching?

    A.His out-of-date teaching routines.

    B.Urgent requests of students’ parents.

    C.Disadvantaged conditions of students.

D.Students’ devotion to study after school.

【2】How did Thomas Mayfield teach the kids?

    A.By explaining the maths principles.

B.By asking them to do more exercises.

C.By instructing the kids to write music.

D.By combining musical notes with maths.

【3】What does Thomas Mayfield highlight in class?

A.Educators must inspire the kids’ interest first.

B.Rules should be set for learners in advance.

C.Each student should be treated equally.

D.Importance must be attached to music.

【4】What could be the best title for the text?

    A.Never Too Late to Learn

    B.The Keys to Teaching Maths

C.Hard Work Turns into Heart Work

    D.Curious Minds Never Feel Contented
