二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Fake news has been widely considered as a problem in recent years, but a new analysis suggests that, at least in America, it may not affect public opinion as much as has been suggested.

Duncan Watts at the University of Pennsylvania and his colleagues analysed the daily media consumption (媒体使用) habits of people in the US. They found that, on average, fake news took up 0.15 per cent of the total time people spent watching TV and movies or gaming, using social media and enjoying other such entertainment. They suggest that traditional news sources, or people avoiding the news altogether, may be greater contributors to creating a misinsformed public and the polarization (两极化) of opinions than fake news.

The team analysed data from Nielsen, a company that measures the TV viewing habits of about 100,000 people in the US to determine ratings. The team also studied nationally representative data from analytics firm Comscore, which measures the time people spend on their computers and mobile phones visiting different media websites.

The researchers found that people in the US spend an average of over 7.5 hours a day consuming media. News comprises (组成)14 per cent of this. People spend about five times more time consuming news on TV—54 minutes—the online, although this ratio was smaller for 18 to 24-year-olds.

“The media plays an important role in questions about politics, public opinion, polarisation and attitudes towards experts,” says Watts. News publishers and programmes should be held as accountable as some social media platforms (平台), he says.

【1】What does the new analysis show?

A.People are more likely to be misled by fake news.

B.Fake news plays a major role in polarisation of opinions.

C.Fake news makes up a tiny part of what people watch or read.

D.People spend more time reading fake news than watching TV.

【2】What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?

A.Why research team did the study.

B.How the researchers did the study.

C.How social media influence public opinion.

D.Why young adults change TV viewing habits.

【3】What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 4 refer to?

    A.People’s daily media consumption.

B.The amount of TV consumption time.

    C.Young people’s newspaper reading time.

D.The total consumption of fake news every year.

【4】What does Watts say about news?

A.It is less popular among young people.

B.It has seen a big drop in consumption.

C.It should be broadcast mainly on TV.

D.It should be as reliable as possible.

  • 22、Living on a tight budget is a reality for millions of British. But for the 62,651 individuals in the UK awaiting their asylum (避难) application, £39.63 a week is the lifeline they are given to survive on, writes Birmingham Live reporter Aida Fofana. This works out as £5.66 a day and is expected to cover food, transport, clothing and toiletries (洗漱用品) but leave out the cost of housing and water and electricity charge. The weekly allowance also covers data and phone credit to keep in contact with loved ones, toys for children, school uniforms and other day-to-day expenses.

So how is it possible to live on a small amount? Aida Fofana decided to live on £39,63 for one week to try and highlight the reality of many asylum seekers living in Birmingham. Beginning on a Monday, Aida wondered if she could make it to the following Monday, covering her various expenses, for less than £40.

The biggest outgoing was on food and as a self-proclaimed foodie (吃货), and it was hard to exercise self-control especially when she spotted Christmas treats. But that’s the reality. People have all been guilty of picking up more at the shops when we only wanted a pint of green top milk. According to the Office of National Statistics 2020 Family spending review, the average family weekly shop totals up to £63.70 and a food shop for one is £25.50 a week.

Having been aware of the costs, she was full of optimism because she thought the items of food stocked up in her cupboards and fridge would carry her through. She was wrong. She had blown £11 on food by Wednesday and it might not seem much but she still had toiletries and cleaning products to buy.

【1】Which cost is beyond the weekly allowance?

    A.Clothing.

    B.Food.

    C.Transport.

    D.Housing.

【2】Why does Aida Fofana try living on £39.63 for a week?

A.To deal with her problem of tight living budget.

B.To call on more people to live on a small amount

C.To test the possibility of living on £39.63 weekly.

D.To draw people’s attention to the poor living cost of British.

【3】What may Aida Fofana agree with?

A.It is difficult to live on £39.63 a week.

B.It is easy for a foodie to exercise self-control.

C.People will buy less when spotting Christmas treats.

D.The average family weekly shop totals £26.50 a week.

【4】Which of the following words can best describe Aida?

    A.Determined and humorous.

    B.Serious and responsible.

    C.Careful and stubborn.

    D.Ambitious and generous.

  • 23、Being in green spaces and connecting with nature is good for your physical and mental health. In Japanese natural healing, forest bathing has been used to decrease stress, anxiety, and even to treat mild depression. Now, scientists have discovered that blue spaces — natural waterways — are also connected to better mental health. A population-based study found that approach to water increased positive feelings of wellbeing.

Being near water gives people a sense of awe, because it gives people a consciousness of something greater than themselves. The sounds and movement of water gets people to focus their attention — like meditation — and this invites calm, You do not have to go to the coast to experience this well-being. Any waterway will do, including lakes, rivers, canals, or ponds. Even a flowing fountain will work.

The study also found that urban waterways were superior to feelings of well-being than just being near the ocean. Canals and rivers contain not only water but also an abundance of trees and plants, which means their capacity to improvement al well-being is likely to be due to the multiple benefits associated with both green and blue spaces.

Canals and rivers also provide homes to a range of wildlife, and we know that there is a notable association between encountering wildlife and mental well-being. Taken collectively, these findings provide an evidence base for what we thought about water and well-being.

These results are very exciting for urban citizens who have access to rivers and canals. The study also found that there were continuous improvements to mental well-being for up to 24 hours after visiting urban waterways. This is all good news. The availability of spaces to be in nature — both green and blue — will help calm their anxiety, stress, and help boost mental health.

A.To introduce the topic about blue spaces.

B.To tell the great benefits of forest bathing.

C.To tell us what works best in reducing stress.

D.To explain green spaces are unpopular now.

【2】What can we know about feelings of well-being from paragraph 3?

A.Your moods in the woods work quite differently.

B.Being near the ocean has the best function to you.

C.Green spaces have no capacity to improve well-being.

D.Combinations of green and blue spaces are more effective.

【3】What does the underlined word “notable” mean in paragraph 4?

    A.Slight.

    B.Rare.

    C.Significant.

    D.Indistinct.

【4】What is the author’s attitude towards the find of blue spaces?

    A.Intolerant.

    B.Favorable.

    C.Doubtful.

    D.Unclear.

  • 24、   Studies have shown that walking among trees makes us relaxed. 1There’s plenty of research showing the link between being in nature and being happy, but most of the research has focused on adults.

2 Explaining the motivation behind the study, researchers note that with environmental issues such as global warming, more studies are focusing on the relationships between humans and nature to find solutions to these problems, and the future of the planet lies in the hands of children and their actions. However, few studies focus on this aspect.

For the study, researchers worked with 296 children between the ages of 9 and 12. To measure how connected they were to nature, the kids were asked how much they enjoy activities like seeing wildflowers and wild animals, hearing sounds of nature and touching animals and plants. 3They also found that the more concerned children were about the environment and nature, the more likely they were to be happy.

So exposure to nature is related to active behaviors and happiness of children. What does that mean to adults? As we all know, children usually tend to follow adults’, especially their parents’ behaviors. That’s to say, when adults are outside and appreciate nature, kids learn by example. 4

Researchers say that children need role models who can gently guide them to nature with excitement and an attitude of a lifelong learner. 5 What’s more important is that they spend time together with children by exploring a fun and safe environment.

A.It’s so good going for a walk around trees.

B.Even just smelling the trees helps reduce anxiety.

C.And if parents enjoy being close to nature, so will their children.

D.Parents don’t have to be experts in environmental science or nature studies.

E.They found that the kids connected to nature were more likely to behave actively.

F.In a new study researchers wanted to see if kids get the same benefits from being outdoors.

G.Researchers will study more about the connection between children’s happiness and nature.
