二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、People have been making and flying kites for about 2000 years. 【1】 Some historians believe that the ancient Chinese may have started flying kites. It is still a popular hobby in Pakistan, China, Japan and Korea and in other countries of the Far East where beautifully decorated kites appear in different colors.

Kites are made in many different sizes, colors and shapes. Simple kites are made by crossing two sticks and covering them with paper or cloth. 【2】 More expensive kites have frames made of fiberglass, plastic or aluminum. The name comes from a graceful bird called Kite.

Kite flying is great fun and it is easy if you know some secrets. 【3】 It flies because air flows over and under the kite’s wing. The pressure under the wing helps the kite lift into the air.

【4】 Early scientists sent kites up into the air to measure temperature at different heights. In 1752, Benjamin Franklin used a kite to prove that lightning was a form of electricity. He attached a metal key to the string of a kite. When lightning hit the kite, electricity passed down the string and Franklin got an electric shock. It was a very dangerous experiment that you shouldn’t copy.

Kites were used to develop airplanes. The Wright Brothers experimented with kites before they flew the first airplane. In the past, kites were sometimes used to take pictures in wars. In World War I, the Germans developed a large kite that could transport people to a submarine. 【5】

Today most people fly kites as a hobby. Kite festivals are organized in many cities in all parts of the world.

A.Then you attach a string at the end.

B.Kites have also been used in experiments.

C.No one knows for sure who invented the kite.

D.A flat kite is the oldest and simplest type of kite.

E.In Japan, families fly fish kites on Children’s Day.

F.Kites were also used to carry radio signals over long distances.

G.Stories of kites were brought to Europe till the end of the 13th century.

  • 22、   Fat on human beings is distributed(分布) in different ways. Some fat people have a large stomach and no waistline- -which makes them look round, rather like apples. Others are fatter below the waist, which makes them appear pear shaped.

There are two types of fat: external fat (fat under the skin) and internal fat (fat inside the body wall). Doctors, who have been examining the relationship between health and fatness, have found that the 'pears' have less internal fat, but the ‘apples’ have more internal fat than external fat. This seems to be what causes the health problems.

The best treatment for fatness is to reduce the internal fat. But unfortunately it seems that dieting simply makes an apple shaped person into a smaller apple and a pear-shaped person into a smaller pear. At the moment there is no known way of reducing the internal rather than external fat.

    1What is the passage about?

A.Ways to lose weight. B.Distribution of fat.

C.People's body shape. D.Fatness and health.

2Which of the following people is most likely to have health problems?

    A. B. C. D.

    3When a pear-shaped person becomes thinner, he/she loses more__________.

A.external fat than internal fat B.internal fat than external fat

C.fat above the waist D.fat below the waist

  • 23、Tens of thousands of lives would be saved every year in the United States if common air pollution from burning fossil fuels (矿物燃料) is got rid of, according to a new study. The research stresses the huge health benefits of moving away from coal, oil and gasoline.

Using data from the Environmental Protection Agency, researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison estimate (估计) that about 50,000 premature (过早的) deaths would be avoided every year if microscopic air pollutants called particulates were got rid of in the U.S..

Premature death and hospitalization are also extremely expensive for the U.S. economy. The study estimates that getting rid of such air pollution would save about $600 billion each year.

Burning fossil fuels are a main source of fine particulate pollution in the U.S.. The new study is the latest reminder that climate change and public health are closely related, and that cutting greenhouse gas emissions doesn’t just reduce long-term risk from global warming; it can save lives immediately by cutting pollution.

Fine particulates, also known as PM 2.5 by scientists and regulators, are pollutants generated by the burning of fossil fuels, wildfires, and some industrial processes. They are about 1/30th the width of human hair, which means they can go deep inside the lungs.

Worldwide, millions of people are estimated to die prematurely every year because of outdoor air pollution, the World Health Organization estimates. More than 1 million global deaths from fine particulate air pollution could be avoided in just one year if fossil fuel burning were got rid of, according to a separate study published last year.

Air quality in much of the U.S. is better than the global average. But the remaining pollution is still deadly, especially to those living in hotspots next to factories, power plants and highways.

“Even with the Clean Air Act in the United States, we still have more than 100,000 Americans who die prematurely from air pollution each year,” says Patz, who has studied the connections between climate change and human health for many years. “It’s a striking health threat.”

【1】What makes people die young according to the new study?

    A.Growing economy.

    B.Huge benefits.

    C.Air pollution.

    D.Climate change.

【2】How could people prevent themselves from premature deaths?

    A.Stop burning fossil fuels.

B.Cut down the cost of economy.

C.Avoid living in the busy place.

    D.Reduce risk from global warming.

【3】What does Patz want to tell us in the last paragraph?

A.People mainly die from air pollution.

    B.Air pollution endangers people’s lives.

C.The Act works well in the United States.

D.People’s health relies on climate change.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

A.Air Quality Depends on People’s Efforts

B.Burning Fossil Fuels Does Harm to People

C.Public Health Is Connected to Climate Change

D.Getting Rid of Air Pollution Would Save Lives
