21、Genetically Modified (GM) food is unfortunately becoming more popular among farmers and food processors. Crops are being genetically modified to resist insects, plant diseases, insecticides(杀虫剂). Plants are also modified to look bigger and better. Unfortunately the end goal isn’t providing nutrition for people, it’s to increase profit margins and to make food look better. In fact many modern fruits and vegetables are twice the size of what they used to be while having far less vitamins, and not tasting good either. Now research is showing that genetically modified food might even be bad for you.
GM organisms are organisms that have genes inserted into their DNA in order to offer certain characteristics. In this way you can make it better, or make it last longer.
Jeffrey M. Smith has published a study about the dangers of GM food. It was discovered that when GM soy was fed to female rats they found that all their young died within 3 weeks compared to a natural 10% death rate. Their young were also born smaller and they later had problems becoming pregnant. A study of pigs found that they also became infertile(不育) after eating GM corn.
Many people are eating GM food without even realizing it. The solution to this problem is simple. Human beings existed in their current form for hundreds of thousands of years. For most of that time we ate a diet consisting of meat, fruit, vegetable, fish, eggs and nuts. This is our optimal diet which leads us to live a healthy and long life. But over the last 30 years North America has experienced diabetes, cancer and heart disease. All due to the misinformation provided by groups who work on behalf of the manufacturers of GM food. The way to avoid obesity, heart disease and cancer is by eating like our stone-age ancestors.

22、 After watching her father struggle with weakness, pain and other issues for years before being diagnosed(诊断) with two serious illnesses, Muriel Metko knew she wanted a career in medicine. "I want to help patients like my father, to find better diagnostic tools and treatment plans," says Metko," I was passionate about pursuing studies in biology in preparation for medical school and UW-Eau Claire was the perfect place to do that."
When Metko was still a second-year college student, Dr. James Phillips, professor of chemistry, asked her to join his research team. She enjoyed it so much that when the first project ended, she joined Dr. Jennifer Dahl's chemistry lab. As a student researcher, Metko has presented research at a national conference, and is working with Dahl and her partner on a paper for publication, things she never imagined doing before.
"As a freshman, I had my eyes set strictly on getting my M.D., but after doing research with Dr. James, I knew it was something I wanted to continue with," Metko says. "I wouldn't have decided to pursue an M.D.-PhD. If Dr. James hadn't recruited(录用)me."
Through her on-campus research, Metko learned useful technical skills, as well as skills like problem-solving and perseverance(毅力), which are critical to be successful in the medical and research fields.
Last summer, Metko was selected to participate in the Undergraduate Research Employment Program(UREP)at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesotu. And her summer research project was recently in the journal STEM CELLS Traditional Medicine. Working at such a famous institution impressed her. Inspired by watching clinicians and researchers cooperate to develop the best diagnostic tools and treatment plans for patients. Metko will join Mayo Clinic's Graduate Research Employment Program(UREP)after graduation, and then attend graduate school to earn her M.D.-PhD, which can enable her to practice medicine and engage in research.

24、 My name is Michelle. I'm 27 years old, and I've been writing letters to my pen pal in England for 14 years.
Yes, a pen pal. Rachel and I have been writing letters to each other since the 8th grade. My reading teacher at the time helped our class find pen pals through a company called International Youth Service (unfortunately closed in 2008).
On February 28, 2006, I received a letter back from the girl from England. Our letters started to turn into novellas(中篇小说) pretty quickly. We began spilling our guts to each other about all sorts of teenage stuff—boys, namely.
We continued writing letters throughout college, but they started to slow down with the age of the Internet and Facebook. It was both a blessing and a curse, because if I needed to share something with her right away, I didn't have to wait two weeks for a response. But there was still no better feeling than opening up my mailbox and seeing past the advertisements and campus happenings and finding a letter with her handwriting on the envelope waiting for me.
One would think that we are more connected than ever in a world of text messaging and social media—but honestly, I don't think this could be further from the truth. We are losing the personal touch, the quality of the time it takes to put into a friendship. Think about letter writing—it's not expensive. An international stamp costs $1.15.
It's not the expense. It's the time. The time it takes to go to the store and pick out a card or stationary. The time it takes to actually hand-write a letter. The time it takes to address the envelope, go to the post office, pay, and mail the letter out. And I believe this is what makes letter writing so personal and special.
【1】How did Michelle find a pen pal?
A.By reading a novel.
B.By travelling to England.

B.Because she didn’t want to wait too long for a reply.
C.Because opening up the mailbox is troublesome.
D.Because too many advertisements took up the mail box.
【3】What happens in a world of text messaging and social media?
A.We become closer to each other.
B.We are losing the quality time of friendship.
C.Letter writing becomes more expensive.
D.Letter writing becomes cheaper.
【4】What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Letter writing takes too much time.
B.Letter communication needs several steps.
C.Time spent in letter writing makes it valuable.
D.Time spent in letter writing makes it expensive.
