21、Some people bring out the best in you in a way that you might never have fully realized on your own. My mom was one of those people.
My father died when I was nine months old, making my mom a single mother at the age of eighteen. While I was growing up, we lived a very hard life. We had little money, but my mom gave me a lot of love. Each night, she sat me on her lap and spoke the words that would change my life, “Kemmons, you are certain to be a great man and you can do anything in life if you work hard enough to get it.”
At fourteen, I was hit by a car and the doctors said I would never walk again. Every day, my mother spoke to me in her gentle, loving voice, telling me that no matter what those doctors said, I could walk again if I wanted to badly enough. She drove that message so deep into my heart that I finally believed her. A year later, I returned to school — walking on my own!
When the Great Depression (大萧条) hit, my mom lost her job. Then I left school to support the both of us. At that moment, I was determined never to be poor again.
Over the years, I experienced various levels of business success. But the real turning point occurred on a vacation I took with my wife and five kids in 1951. I was dissatisfied with the second-class hotels available for families and was angry that they charged an extra $2 for each child. That was too expensive for the average American family. I told my wife that I was going to open a motel (汽车旅馆) for families that would never charge extra for children. There were plenty of doubters at that time.
Not surprisingly, mom was one of my strongest supporters. She worked behind the desk and even designed the room style. As in any business, we experienced a lot of challenges. But with my mother’s words deeply rooted in my soul, I never doubted we would succeed. Fifteen years later, we had the largest hotel system in the world — Holiday Inn. In 1979 my company had 1, 759 inns in more than fifty countries with an income of $ 1 billion a year.
You may not have started out life in the best situation. But if you can find a task in life worth working for and believe in yourself, nothing can stop you.

22、Watching the Northern Lights(北极光)shining on the sky’s natural canvas may be on your list already, but be prepared to up the money.
A developer is creating a floating, snowflaked - shaped(雪花形状的)glass hotel from which guests can stare in fear at the Northern Lights from their beds. The project is called Krystall. Eighty –six luxury rooms will be covered within a glass structure alongside conference rooms and a spa, all of which is only accessible by boat.
The stationery hotel will be built near in northern Norway reportedly between bays. It will be constructed, in pieces, in dry docks(码头), before being fit together on location.
Explaining the physics and design of the hotel, Koen Olthuis, Dutch architect and founder of Waterstudio, a specialist in floating structures, said: “The floating base is very big and because of that also very stable. You will not notice any movement. Different to any vessel this hotel is a floating building and will not move. The shape provides most of the stability but cables(缆绳)are used to take away any speed.”
“Same look and feel as a land based hotel but then on the most beautiful spot on the water. The hotel is not connected to land so all the things will be provided by boats.”
According to Mr Olthuis, who wouldn’t tell the actual cost of the project, the budget is 15 percent more than it would have been if it were built on land. He said that an important ting to the hotel’s construction was for its creation to be “scarless” on the perfect environment surrounding it.
“We call it a scarless development. If you take it away after a hundred years or so it will not leave any physical footprint. That is the only way to bring developments to such a valuable and beautiful marine environment in Norway.”
It is hoped that the hotel will be “self-supporting and sustainable” using top of the range technology, hekping to support the “growing eco-tourism market.”
“Dutch Docklands has learned to live with the water instead of fighting it,” the firm states. “Floating houses are common in the Netherlands but we took that technology abroad and scale it up in size.”

23、The idea that having narrow local focus leaves little room for anything but a selfish mindset is a misconception, according to a new study that found that concern for local affairs could help with global environmental conservation.
You might have heard of NIMBY which means “not in my back yard” and describes an individual or group opposed to a new addition to the neighborhood, typically a factory, roadway or power station. Nimbyism and parochialism(眼界狭小), which is a focus on a local area, can go hand in hand, and there are concerns that parochialism paves the way for prejudice, narrowmindedness, and selfishness.
But researchers found the exact opposite to be true in a new study published. The researchers argue that positive parochialism can inspire a larger awareness of global environmental problems and encourage people to action.
“We did not find evidence that parochialism was necessarily negative and inward -looking,” said Patrick, a researcher for the study. “It can be those things, but there's no necessary conflict between feeling connected to your local area and feeling connected to the wider world. ”
For the study, the researchers reviewed documents from the 1987 Parish Maps project. The researchers showed how the Parish Maps project also demonstrated a passion for the environment and conservation. The researchers say that the Parish Maps project is a strong example of “positive parochialism”, and shows that thinking locally can influence a global mindset.
“For a long time, it has been generally agreed that if we want people to think about global affairs they need an international worldview-but this may not be the case,” said Patrick. “Given where we are now in terms of trying to encourage people to make changes to help the environment, positive parochialism offers something that has been overlooked.”
【1】Which behavior can best illustrate NIMBY?
A.Criticizing a friend for his selfish action.
B.Accepting a proposal beneficial to locals.
C.Supporting a neighborhood construction plan.
D.Objecting to building an airport in the neighborhood.
【2】Why does the author mention the Parish Maps project?
A.To explain how to protect the environment.
B.To offer an example of positive parochialism.
C.To encourage people to take part in the project.
D.To stress the importance of global mindset.
【3】How does Patrick feel about “positive parochialism phenomenon”?
A.Appreciative.
B.Cautious.
C.Negative.
D.Puzzled.
【4】What may be the best title for the text?
A.Parochialism, a better practice?
B.International view, more popular?
C.Thinking locally, acting globally
D.Bigger thinking, better environment
24、On the edge of the Atlantic, there is much more water on islands. Experts say the Uists (尤伊斯特群岛) in the UK are on the front line of climate change and some of those who call this home are already adapting to their changing landscape. Donald MacPhee, an islander told BBC, “We seem to be getting a lot more rain—very unpredictable, but back in my father’s days you could guarantee that you’d have plenty of dry weather in August. But now it’s very unpredictable.” This low-lying watery landscape is weak to changes in our climate—with predictions that the sea level here could rise by as much as half a metre over the next few decades.
And that’s not the only challenge facing these islands which are so exposed to wet and stormy weather. Professor Stewart Angus, a coastal ecologist said, “A lot of the land actually lies below the level of the sea for much of the tidal cycle (潮汐). Secondly, you have rising sea levels. Thirdly, you have rising rainfall in winter. And you have the great difficulty in a very low-lying environment of removing that water.”
The airport here provides a lifeline service to islanders. A million pounds has been spent on the latest work to protect the runway, which ends just metres from the shore. At the islands’ arts centre, a picture of a rising line is shown. Andy Mackinnon, an artist told us, “So, the line represents a symbolic level that the sea will rise to. I hope that it does make people think about what we’re doing.”
And from the children here, out taking care of their local beach, messages in English and Gaelic (盖尔语) of their hopes and fears are being sent to the UN climate summit in Glasgow. “Stop sea levels rising. We could be under the water soon.” These small islands hope for big commitments from world leaders to lessen the worst that climate change might bring.
【1】What does Paragraph 1 imply?
A.All islands have been under the water.
B.The weather here now is still predictable.
C.Islands are at risk due to climate change.

A.Dry and hot weather.
B.Irregular tidal cycle.

【3】What is Andy Mackinnon’s attitude towards the islands?
A.Concerned.
B.Indifferent.
C.Pessimistic.
D.Relieved.
【4】What might be talked about in the paragraph following the text?

B.What help UN can provide for islanders.
C.What life children here live.
D.What effect climate change may bring.
