二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Loud cheers and applause broke out at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab on Monday, November 25, 2018, as the unmanned lander, called Insight, touched down on Mars, after nearly seven

years from design to launch to landing.

The great arrival of the spacecraft—designed to listen for quakes and shakes as a way to discover the Red Planet’s inner secrets, how it formed billions of years ago and, how other planets like Earth took shape—marked the eighth successful landing on Mars in Nasa’s history.

Minutes after InSight landed on the surface of Mars, the first image was sent back, showing a wide flat area as seen through a dirty camera.

The touchdown came after a nearly seven-month, 300 million-mile travel from Earth to Mars, during which the InSight spacecraft had to slow down from a speed of more than 12,000 mph. The spacecraft’s heat shelter helped the lander survive temperatures as high as 2,700℉.

Each step along the way was watched nervously at JPL, with updates delayed by the eight-minute light travel time between Earth and Mars. Mission controllers hugged each other with joy when the signals were received. “We are proud of everything that has gone on today,” they told us reporters.

The first picture of the surface of Mars was sent back to Earth by one of the MarCO nanosatellites (马可纳米卫星) that accompanied InSight during its travel to Mars. The dust from the landing made the view unclear. Pictures from it were expected to be clearer once the dust settled and the lens cover (镜头盖) was removed.

Hours later, InSight’s batteries were charging as expected. The InSight team also passed on another picture, taken by a different camera that’s fixed on the lander’s robotic arm. The view is clearer, showing the robotic arm and the seismometer, which is used to discover the actual movement of the ground.

【1】What do we know about InSight lander from the passage?

A.It has landed successfully on Mars eight times.

B.It travelled all the way at the speed of 12,000 mph.

C.Mission controllers helped it survive high temperature.

D.The task of it is to find out the inner mysteries of Mars.

【2】We know what Mars looks like by _______.

A.studying pictures InSight lander sends back

B.reading reports sent back by the person on Mars

C.collecting images sent back by MarCO nanosatellites

D.analyzing information the robot on InSight lander sends back

【3】How did the mission controllers feel when they received signals from Insight?

    A.Unconcerned.

    B.Worried.

    C.Amazed.

    D.Excited.

【4】The passage is most probably taken from _______.

    A.a fiction novel

    B.a news report

    C.a travel magazine

    D.an official statement

  • 22、We’re frequently told that our attention problem-being easily distracted-result from modern technology. If we truly want to focus, according to the popular belief, we need to turn off all our digital devices and quit social media.

Here’s my opinion about that idea. This era(时代)is no different than any other-there has always been a “crisis of attention”. Think about life long ago: people in ancient India or Europe didn’t have smartphones and social media, but they were faced with the same problem.

A crisis of attention can happen anytime you don’t allow yourself a break-when you don’t allow your mind to daydream, which may inspire your creativity. We are always engaged in something. With these digital tools at our fingertips, we have constant access to all these forms of communication, content, and interaction, and we don’t let our thoughts wander(漫游)freely. When was the last time you stood in line at a store and just…looked around? Thought about whatever came to your mind? Or did you pull out your phone, check your texts, read your email during that time?

We all do it. We catch ourselves all the time going from one type of mental engagement to the next. Like surfing online (clicking from link to link), we go from one task to the next and the next. We are “all task and no downtime”. Even something you might think of as relaxing is more engagement. Checking your phone messages may seem “fun”, but it’s just another task for your attention. Your attention is focused on task after task after task, without a moment for the mind to wander freely.

It’s not always realistic to unplug. We can’t just turn off our phones and pause our email. We can’t create a distraction-free world. The problem is not the existence(存在)of modern technology; rather, it’s how we’re using it.

【1】Why does the author mention people in ancient India?

A.To argue against the popular belief.

B.To discuss the benefits of technology.

C.To suggest a solution to the attention problem.

D.To show the seriousness of the attention problem.

【2】Which is an example of “downtime” according to the author?

    A.Chatting with friends.

    B.Reading a newspaper.

    C.Sitting back doing nothing.

    D.Checking phone messages.

【3】What does the underlined word “unplug” mean in the last paragraph?

    A.Work long hours.

    B.Improve technology.

    C.Stop using digital devices.

    D.Balance work and leisure.

【4】Which section of a website is the text most likely from?

    A.Culture.

    B.Fashion.

    C.History.

    D.Opinion.

  • 23、   Modem architecture has brought many amazing buildings to the world. Here are some of the strangest buildings in the world.

    Habitat 67, Montreal, Canada

Habitat 67 is a very interesting arrangement of cubes, which looks like the building blocks that children play with. It is pretty interesting how it was designed. In its material sense, the cube is a symbol of stability. It looks so original and at the same time comfortable for living. It was created as a main attraction for Expo 67, one of the world’s largest universal expositions (博览会) where housing was one of the main themes.

The Basket Building, Ohio, United States

The Longaberger Basket Company building in Newark, Ohio might just be a strangest office building in the world. The 180,000-square-foot building, a copy of the company’s famous market basket, cost $ 30 million and took two years to complete. Many experts tried to persuade Dave Longaberger to change his plans, but he wanted an exact copy of the real thing.

    The Crooked House, Sopot, Poland

Finished in 2003, the Crooked House has an extraordinary and amazing structure. Its design was based on the pictures of polish artist Jan Marcin Szancer and Swedish painter Per Dahlberg. It looks as if it had been taken from a cartoon: The building lines are not straight, but they are balanced, so the house is not ugly at all, just strange! The interesting part is how builders managed to create this genius idea, but the house is a fact and everyone admires their creativity.

    La Pedrera, Spain

It is situated in the Eixample district of Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. The story of the house is pretty interesting. The house was designed by Antoni Gaudi and built for a married couple. It is an extraordinary but stylish building considered to be highly unconventional-there is not even one straight line!

1Which of the buildings above is associated with a toy?

    A.Habitat 67. B.The Basket Building.

    C.The Crooked House. D.La Pedrera.

2What can we learn about the Basket Building?

    A.It was built for exhibition.

B.It was designed following the pictures.

C.It was constructed according to its original design.

D.It might be the strangest office building in the world.

3What do the Crooked House and La Pedrera have in common?

    A.They both look very ugly.

B.They are built by Antoni Gaudi

    C.Their design patterns are common.

    D.Their construction lines are bent.

  • 24、   The future of space exploration may depend on an art form from the past: origami (折纸艺术), the ancient art of paper folding.

Researchers from Washington State University (WSU), US, have used origami to possibly solve the problem of storing and moving fuel to rocket engines, a key challenge in space travel, according to Newswise. They’ve developed a foldable plastic fuel “bladder (囊状物)” resistant to super cold temperatures, which could be used to store and pump fuel in spacecrafts of the future. Their findings have recently been published in the journal Cryogenics.

“Folks have been trying to make bags for rocket fuel for a long time,” said Jake Leachman, one of the lead researchers. “We currently don’t do large, long-duration trips because we can’t store fuel long enough in space.”

Meanwhile, NASA is also looking to paper folding to help observe distant planets. The agency is currently developing Starshade, a foldable, sunflower-shaped piece of hardware that would help block starlight and enable telescopes to view distant objects more clearly in space.

“A huge part of my job is looking at something on paper and asking, ‘Can we fly this?’” Manan Arya, a technologist in California, said. “Once I realized this is how you fold spacecraft structures, I became interested in origami. I realized I was good at it and enjoyed it. Now, I fold constantly. ”

Using origami for space purposes isn’t new, however. Solar arrays (太阳能阵列), experimental wings for space shuttle programs and an inflatable (可充气的) satellite were also inspired by origami in both past and present space projects.

“With most origami, the magic comes from the folding,” Robert Salazar, who helped design the Starshade and now works on the Transformers project, said in a statement. “There are so many patterns to still be explored.”

【1】How could the “bladder” help in future missions?

A.To protect spacecrafts from extreme weather.

B.To be used to store and supply fuel in spacecrafts.

C.To help rocket engines cut energy consumption.

D.To be used to improve energy efficiency.

【2】What can we know about NASA’s Starshade?

A.It can be used to get telescopes closer to stars.

B.It can enlarge the view of telescopes in space.

C.It can absorb a star’s light before it enters telescopes.

D.It can help telescopes get clearer pictures of objects in space.
