二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Manners are a set of practices and forms which are followed in a wide variety of situations. If you are a newcomer to a particular culture, learning these rules can be very challenging. 1 It is safe to assume that there is a rule in every situation one might encounter. 2 That’s why many people study manners before travelling or entering a new social circle to ensure that they aren’t considered to be impolite or aggressive.

3 For example, the concept of greeting people politely and with respect is common to people of many cultures, although the way in which respect is expressed may vary. In some Asian countries, for example, people may bow or grasp their hands together when greeting someone, while in the United States, people often shake hands or hug each other.

The consequences of mistakes in manners may vary. 4 As a result, the people present at the time of the mistake might form a negative impression of you. At worst, a mistake could cost a friendship or a job, and in some regions of the world, a serious one could cost you your life.

By treating people as respectfully as you can and by using common sense, you will probably avoid most dangerous behavior-related situations. 5 It is especially important to learn such guides in the library or on the Internet in advance in case conflicts are caused thoughtlessly.

A.The rules of manners govern how people behave.

B.Actually even old hands sometimes have a tough time.

C.Manners begin when meeting someone for the first time.

D.But the good news is that it is very simple to learn manners.

E.At a minimum, you might make others feel slightly awkward.

F.And the rules of manners of different cultures can be quite different.

G.However, if you are planning to enter an unfamiliar culture, it pays to do research.

  • 22、When I stepped into the Samcheong Park Library in Seoul, I saw the future. The simple building had a nice selection of books and a cafe where readers could enjoy coffee while gazing at the leaves outside. It was specifically designed without any latest technology.

“What’s so innovative (创新的) about that?” a librarian in Toronto asked when I showed her pictures. Innovation to her meant digital technology, like 3D printers. “Why couldn’t they both be innovative?” I asked.

We are constantly told that innovation is the most important force in our economy, without which we would be left behind. But that fear of missing out has led us to fall into the false trappings of innovation over truly innovative ideas that may be simpler and more effective. This mindset implies that if you just buy the new thing, you have innovated! Each year, businesses and individuals run around like broken toy robots, trying to figure out their strategy for the latest buzzword equipment.

At best, this is a waste of resource. Devices are bought, used and abandoned, as the technology’s capabilities fall short of its promise. But at its worst, this approach can truly cause damage. Schools cut field trips to purchase tablets with few proven benefits. Companies that applied AI into hiring have actually strengthened gender and racial prejudices.

True innovation isn’t just some magic devices. It is a continuing process of reflection and reassessment, which often means adopting “old” ideas and tools in a new context, or even returning to methods that worked in the past. Adjusted properly, these rearview (后视的) innovations have proved as transformative as novel technologies.

Look no farther than the streets of New York, which have been redesigned recently to accommodate cyclists with car-free zones. The idea isn’t new. It was created half a century ago, with the aim of bringing cities back to their residents. And while e-reader sales have been exploding, Penguin just announced it would publish tiny printed books, an ideal solution for a market demanding both convenience and physicality.

  • 23、In the struggle to survive the ever hotter deserts of California, there are winners and losers. Among the losers are desert birds, whose populations have fallen among the heat stress of climate change. The winners, it turns out, are small burrowing mammals(穴居哺乳动物), which take refuge from the sun underground. Researchers noted that the stable mammals populations formed a striking contrast to the extremely bad condition of birds.

But why? Birds had a higher evaporative(蒸发)heat loss. Birds were more exposed to the effects of warming, so they had higher energy costs to maintain their body temperature. However, mammals were able to reduce their body temperature by using burrows during the day.

Temperatures have risen about 4 degrees Fahrenheit on average across the area studied, but the heat affects birds and small mammals differently. As part of the study, scientists modeled each species' body temperature and cooling needs under different desert conditions. To calculate that, they measured the conductivity(传导率)of the animals' fur or feathers, and used information on their heat reducing behaviors.

The models showed that in the fight against climate change, there was not a level playing field for furred and feathered desert animals. Cooling costsor the resources needed to maintain stable body temperaturewere about 3. 3 times higher for birds than they were for small mammals, the study reported.

Small mammals have shown this remarkable stability. It's really quite interesting that, in the same region, with the same level of climate change, these two species have responded very differently to the changes taking place. Insights into the status of different species can help scientists take steps to protect them, such as increasing fire prevention in high desert areas, and enhancing water sources in those areas. The study also demonstrates that climate change is already reshaping the California desert

【1】Why can desert burrowing mammals survive better than desert birds?

A.Burrowing mammals prefer to live in deserts.

B.Burrowing mammals eat less during the day.

C.Burrowing mammals' caves are natural shelters.

D.Burrowing mammals live in the same community.

【2】What can we learn from the third paragraph?

A.Birds and small mammals respond differently to climate changes.

B.Birds in the desert were defeated by climate changes.

C.Animals living underground have higher cooling costs.

D.Temperature rise affects the burrowing mammals little.

【3】What is the possible meaning of the new finding?

A.Burrowing mammals may help birds during the day.

    B.Governments will improve water quality.

C.Man will reshape the deserts to save themselves.

D.Scientists can save species with scientific means.

【4】What do we know from the text?

A.It's time to change the deserts into green fields.

B.Desert birds are more likely to survive in deserts.

C.Burrowing mammals' habitat needs improving greatly.

D.Burrowing mammals survive climate change underground.

  • 24、Several years ago, KenKeegan organized a gathering in Las Vegas, with a group of architects involved, who were asked what it would take to design a public school which used 50 percent less energy, cost much less to build and obviously improved students learning. “I think half of them fell off their chairs,” Keegan says.

Keegan is in charge of the management school facilities for Clark County, Nevada, a district roughly the size of Massachusetts. By 2028, 143,000 additional students will enter the already crowded public-education system. Keegan needs 73 new schools to house them. Four architecture teams have nearly finished designing primary school prototypes. With the intention of   constructing their schools in 2019, the district will assess how well the schools perform before allowing the winners to conduct their designs in 50 to 70 new buildings.

Green schools keep emerging all over, but in Clark County, which stands out for its vastness, such aggressive targets are difficult because design requirements like more natural light for students go against the realities of a desert climate. “One of the biggest obstacles is getting the right site orientation,” Mark. Mc, a director at SH Architecture, says. His team recently completed a high school in Las Vegas. “You have the same building, same set of windows, but if   its orientation is incorrect and it faces the sun, it will be really expensive to cool.”

Surprisingly, the man responsible for one of the most progressive green-design competitions has doubts about ideas of eco-friendly buildings. “I don’t believe in the new green religion,” Keegan says, “Some of the building technologies that you put forward are impractical. I’m only interested in those that work.” But he doesn’t mind if some green features inspire students. He says he hopes to set up green energy systems that allow them to learn about the process of harvesting wind and solar power. “You never know what’s going to start the interest of a child to study math and science,” he says.

【1】What can be inferred from the architects’ reaction in Paragraph 1?

A.Half of them lost balance in excitement.

    B.Disbelief was obviously seen.

C.Most of them expressed little interest.

    D.They burst into cheers.

【2】Which order of steps should be followed in carrying out the project?

    A.Assessment-Construction-Design.

    B.Assessment-Design-Construction.

    C.Design-Construction-Assessment.

    D.Design-Assessment-Construction.

【3】What is the biggest challenge Clark County faces if they are to build green schools?

    A.The large size.

    B.Limited facilities.

    C.The desert climate.

    D.Poor natural resources.

【4】In Keegan’s opinion, the ideas of green schools are .

    A.questionable

    B.out of date

    C.advanced

    D.practical.
