  • 21、Vincent Van Gogh

Born in the Netherlands in 1853, van Gogh led a simple life in a small town until the age of 16. He then left school and joined a company of art business in the larger city. During the next seven years, van Gogh bought and sold paintings in the Netherlands, London, and Paris. He eventually realized that dealing with others’ artwork was not his dream. He soon discovered that his dream was to become an artist himself.

He spent much of his time in learning the basic skills of drawing. He believed that to become a great painter, one must first master the ability to draw. It was only after he was comfortable in this area that he began to use oil paints. That is when van Gogh developed a style for color that made him one of the most respected artists of all time.

Van Gogh’s paintings are amazing representations (代表) of his view of the world. He used his brush and oils to make layers that built the painting until it was almost three-dimensional (三维). This quality makes people want to reach out and touch the painting.

Perhaps one of the most memorable examples of van Gogh’s use of color and brush style is his painting The Starry Night. The sky swirls across the canvas (画布), while the stars glow with unearthly brightness. Each brushstroke (笔画) creates the movement and lights. Under the sky rests a village painted with smaller strokes and finer detail, giving the impression of peace. A large tree in the foreground suggests that the view is enjoyed from the top of a hill, which offers a glimpse of the majesty (庄严) of the night sky. The Starry Night displays the gift of van Gogh’s ability to create a powerful image with simple brush and oils.

Van Gogh spent only the last ten years of his life painting. Yet van Gogh today is considered one of the greatest artists of all time. His influence is strong; many painters mimic his style and use of color. His artwork can be found in museums all over the world.

【1】Van Gogh learned how to paint by ________.

    A.praise van Gogh’s ability

【3】The author seems to admire the ________ most about van Gogh’s paintings.

  • 22、   “Who made you T-shirt?” A Georgetown University student raised that question. Piertra Rivoli, a professor of business, wanted to find the answer. A few weeks later, she bought a T-shirt and began to follow its path from Texas cotton farms to Chinese factories to charity bin (慈善捐赠箱). The result is an interesting new book, The travels of a T-shirt in the Global Economy.

Following a T-shirt around the world in a way to make her point more interesting, but it also frees Rivoli from the usual arguments over global trade. She goes, wherever the T-shirt goes, and there are surprises around every corner, In China, Rivoli shows why a clothing factory, even with its poor conditions, means a step towards a better life for the people who work there. In the colorful used-clothing markets of Tanzania, she realizes that, “it is only in this final stage of life that the T-shirt will meet a real market,” where the price of a shirt changes by the hour and is different by its size and even color. Rivoli's book is full of memorable people and scenes, like the noise, the bad air and the “muddy sweet smell (泥土香味) of the cotton.” She says,”Here in the factory, Shanghai smells like Shallowater, Texas.”

Rivoli is at her best when making those sorts of unexpected connections. She even finds one between the free traders and those who are against globalization. The chances opened up by trade are huge, she argues, but free markets need the correcting force of politics to keep them in check. True economic progress needs them both.

    B.She wears a T-shirt wherever she goes.

  • 23、   Plastic is used for food packaging(包装) and water bottles as well as many other things you use every day. Look around, plastic is all over! Sadly, much of plastic waste is thrown into waste lands or washed into the sea, breaking down into particles. Particles are often taken in by animals or fish. Unless you are the one who only eats vegetables, it is highly likely that you are also eating this plastic. Besides, when you drink soft drinks from a plastic bottle, you also have the danger of drinking a dangerous chemical. It has been proved that plastic is connected with some types of diseases and young children’s growth.

A plastic bottle can break down into enough small pieces on each seaside in the whole world. They have also been discovered to collect in large amount in sea locations where winds and currents(洋流) are weak.

How do you help to solve the problem? Use a stainless steel(不锈钢) bottle. It is an obvious way to deal with the problem that has been ignored for many years. Many countries become increasingly more familiar with the pollution that is damaging the environment. It’s easy to understand why steps are being taken to discover things to replace the plastic.

If you use a stainless steel water bottle, you can help cut the number of using plastic bottles, which are thrown away and break down gradually. It may even take 1000 years to fade away. In a word, even by doing something as small as changing your water bottle to a stainless steel one, you could make the world a better place to live for future generations.

1What does the underlined word “particles” mean in paragraph 1?

A.Tiny pieces of plastic. B.Healthy drinks to humans.

    C.New bottles. D.Useful materials.

2What bad influence do plastic products have on people according to the text?

    A.They change people’s eating habits.

B.They affect people’s ways of choosing food.

C.They change people’s attitudes to soft drinks.

D.They may make people suffer from some kinds of diseases.

3Which of the following does the author want to express?

A.Winds in the sea are often weak in some seasons.

B.Chemicals of animals in the sea are easy to collect.

C.Many countries are suffering the pollution of plastic.

D.Plastic will completely be replaced by other things in the future.

4What is the text mainly about?

A.A major use of plastic bottles.

B.A large amount of plastic on the seaside.

C.The future development of plastic bottles.

D.The bad influence of plastic bottles and its solution.

  • 24、We all want to go somewhere — somewhere that has been on our bucket list for ages. So, when the chance arises, we tend to squeeze as many sights into the trip as we can — four cities in seven days, “must-see’s” in Tokyo, famous landmarks in Europe. It’s as if the faster we’re checking things off our list, the more we are experiencing.

However, when it comes to travel, it’s probably not quantity that counts but quality. Traveler, the South Korean reality show, can perhaps give us some idea of what travel is like at its best.

Like many travel-themed shows, Traveler features two celebrities — Ryu Jun-yeol, 33, and Lee Je-hoon, 35. But unlike other cookie-cutter (千篇一律的) travel shows, Traveler’s travelers don’t have a mission and there isn’t a competition for them to win. Instead, it focuses on “depicting the real experience of traveling by showing the processes of finding a place to stay or grabbing a taxi”, according to The Korea Times. In other words, Ryu and Lee are given total freedom to explore, for example, Cuba, the central American country, without any interference or help from a production team.

This is actually the philosophy of what’s called “slow travel” —which is currently trending among the world’s more adventurous journeyers.

Slow travel isn’t about getting somewhere as quickly as possible, but about simply being excited as you’re getting there — or not getting there at all.

You may try to wander off the main road and take a back street instead. You may ignore the guidebook’s recommendation and ask local people where they prefer to cat and hang out. And you’ll be surprised by what a place has to offer when you’re not busy rushing around and checking things off your bucket list.

“Travel is just like life,” said Ryu in the show. “There is little fun in it if everything is predictable.” It’s true that we all want to go “somewhere”. But as the travel blog Cheese Web says, “As long as you keep an open mind, you’ll see that everywhere is ‘somewhere’.”

【1】What do people usually do when they have the chance to go somewhere?

A.People can’t wait to go to as many places as they can.

B.People like to travel to somewhere but they have no time.

C.People often go sightseeing without any purposes and plans.

D.People pay attention to their travel quality rather than quantity.

【2】From the show, Traveler, we know that

A.both the travelers in the show are not famous

B.travelers in Traveler have certain assignments and competitions

C.travelers in Traveler have the freedom to explore with some interference

D.travel in the show focuses on feelings during traveling. such as being excited

【3】What’s the attitude of the author towards the current travel trend among adventurous journeyers?

    A.Doubtful.

    B.Supportive.

    C.Critical.

    D.Indifferent.

【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A.Travel: Becoming Part of Life

    B.Slow Travel: Featuring More Sightseeing

C.Quality Travel: Attracting Tourists from Abroad

D.Slow Travel: Helping People Truly Explore Places
