21、Eighty- four online-only, open access (OA) journals in the sciences, and about 170 in the social sciences and humanities(人文学科),have disappeared from the Internet over the past 2 decades. A study has found these journals ended up falling offline within several years after their first publication as they were not kept in good condition for some reason. An additional 900 journals published only online also may be at high risk of disappearing because they are inactive.
"There is usually a vast amount of time contributed by a lot of people behind every article, from the authors to the editors, all the way to peer-reviewers”, Mikael Laakso,a co-author of the study, explained.“The fact that all the previous online scholarly records are cut off from the world on which they once made a positive impact, for not having enough maintenance, is totally unacceptable."
A new initiative set by research funders requires maintenance systems—but most online-only journals currently lack such plans. The new preservation system requires scholars to make their articles immediately free to read upon publication. Overall, only about one-third of the 14,068 online journals published in 2019 ensure the long term preservation of their content while the rest of them are estimated to go dark in a few years.
It's not clear how many subscription-based journals also have gone dark in recent years. Subscription-based content has historically been better covered by libraries, either by having paper copies on shelves or electronically. There have been established processes and budgets in place for libraries to preserve purchased content, which put subscription-based journals in the catbird seat, when it comes to preservation. However, what is just available for anyone to download for free has not been brought into such processes and thus runs the risk of disappearing.
There's little consensus about who is ultimately responsible for the digital preservation of OA journals—publishers, libraries, or universities. Preserving OA journals may pose a particularly big financial challenge for those publishers that do not charge authors for the publication of their articles. Library budgets, meanwhile, have faced cuts. And preservation sometimes seems less important than working on the articles which European funders often use to evaluate the quality of university scholarship.

22、 People who have got rhythm might have an advantage when it comes to language and reading skills. A new study shows the brains of people who can move to a musical beat react to speech on a more consistent basis than those who can't. Researchers also find that musical training can sharpen the brain's response to language.
The researchers say their discovery provides the first biological link between the ability to keep a beat and how the brain responds to speech, something that can have important value for reading skills. To gather materials for their research, the team got more than 100 teenagers who lived in Chicago, Illinois. The teens were given two tests. First, they were instructed to listen to and tap their fingers along to the beat. The researchers calculated how accurately their young volunteers were able to tap along to the musical timekeeper. Second, the teen subjects were linked to an EEG device, which measures electrical activity in the brain. The EEG device was focused on an area of the brain that not only processes sound, but is also connected to parts of the brain responsible for motor-movement. The researchers recorded the brainwaves as their teen subjects listened to the synthesized speech sound, which was repeated irregularly for half an hour. The researchers were able to find out how the nerve cells in that particular region of the brain responded every time the synthesized sound was played. a Across this population of adolescents, the more accurate they were at tapping along to the beat, the more consistent their brains' response to the letter unit was," said Nina Kraus.
While past studies have showed the links between reading skills and a person's ability to keep a beat, the researchers said their new findings show the hearing system is what provides a common basis for those links. “Rhythm is naturally a part of music and language." Nina said.

I sat with a friend a few weeks ago as she scrolled through photos of her college freshman daughter on her phone. She asked me, “Doesn't she look happy? She looks OK, right?” Her daughter had recently had a difficult time, which was now over, but her mother — like all mothers would — still worried, sometimes, that something might be wrong.
For generations of parents, sending children off to college meant knowing little to nothing about how their children were doing. Other than the occasional letter or call from a dorm room phone, children who had left home were mostly unseen and heard from infrequently. College kids could get into all kinds of trouble and their parents would know nothing about it until Christmas vacation or summer break.
Now, of course, that's not at all how it is. Parents of college students can spend hour upon hour examining photos on Instagram or Facebook of their children. They look for hints of sadness in their eyes, the way their clothes fit, whether they're really smiling or just sort of smiling.
However, I don't think it's necessary. College is a time of intense personal growth. Pain is a necessary lesson for the emotional leap from childhood to adulthood. Mothers shouldn't be able to see photos in real time that capture their children when they're at their worst — whether because of too much alcohol or too little happiness.
The blessing of social media is the ability to connect at any time with your child, no matter where he or she may be in the world. Facebook, Instagram and the rest are keeping our helicopters flying long after they should have landed. Maybe it would be better for all of us to be a little less aware of the state of our children's lives once they leave home. Better for the children, and certainly better for the parents.
【1】That friend scrolled through photos on her phone most probably because she ________.
A.was bored and wanted to kill the time
B.wanted to make sure her daughter was alright
C.wanted to help her daughter through the difficulty
D.was sure something was wrong with her daughter
【2】What does Paragraph 2 tell us about parents of college students in the past?
A.They were often worried about their children.
B.They usually let their children do whatever they liked.
C.They were usually too busy to care about their children.
D.They lacked means of knowing about their children's situation.
【3】What does the writer think of children's experiencing pain at college?
A.It is helpless. B.It is necessary.
C.It is nonsense. D.It should be prevented.
【4】The passage is written to show that ________.
A.children don't really have freedom at college
B.social media make our life much easier than before
C.today's parents contact their children more frequently

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My mother eyed me with suspicion. I dared not look at her. Knowing that I was late from school five days in a row, I could not offer an acceptable explanation. However, realizing she had little choice but to accept my explanation that I had extra curricular activities every day and arrived home after 5 p.m., she told me that dinner was in the refrigerator and to warm it up in the microwave oven. She had to rush for her night work at the local clinic.
After our dad passed away in an accident, my mother became the only breadwinner. I was the eldest among the four siblings (兄弟姊妹) and it fell upon my shoulder to ensure that they would become responsible adults. Aside from helping Mother with the housework, I regularly coached them in their studies. Thankfully, never once did I have to raise my voice or force them to complete their homework. But all of us missed Dad deeply, who was a model father and husband. Mom had never recovered from the tragic incident.
However, she managed to pull through to raise us and secured a job at the clinic. It was very tough on someone like her who had never worked before in her life. But money was scarce and there were five mouths to feed. We stopped dining out and had our meals mostly at home. We basically lived from hand to mouth. That’s when it dawned on me that I had to do my part for the family. I knew Mother would not agree but I threw caution out of the window and managed to get a part-time job at a fast food restaurant. I worked three hours a day and managed to bring home money so that my siblings and I could go out for occasional movies or meals.
I was sure Mother suspected something wrong. But she could not quite point the figure to the source of her suspicion. However, I was awfully guilty and had to constantly reassure (宽慰) myself that contributing financially to the family was the least I could do to lessen my mother’s burden.
