21、Hello. I’m Jan from Mrs. Lake’s class. My class wants to work together to help the public. We think we have found a great way to do this. Last month we did a class project on the highways near our town. We learned about the Adopt-a-Highway Program. This program brings people together to pick up litter along the roads. We think it would be a great idea for all students in our school to join the program and adopt a highway.
Adopting a highway is not like adopting a pet. When a highway is adopted, only part of the highway is cared for by a group of people. The group agrees to work every week to keep its part of the highway clean. Each group gets its own sign that has the name of the group printed on it. The sign is put up at the side of the road. This sign lets drivers know who is keeping that area of the road clean.
The Adopt-a-Highway Program is a great way for people to help their environment look nicer. Also, the government does not have to send out as many road workers. This saves money. Finally, people may try harder to keep roads clean if they see people, especially teenagers like us, cleaning them up.
We will need helpers to care for our adopted highway. If you want to feel great and keep our roads clean, please come with your parents to the meeting next week. We will meet in Mrs. Lake’ room on Wednesday at 6:00 P.M. At the meeting, we will talk about which roads are the dirtiest as a result of people's unkind acts. Then we' ll try to pick an area to adopt and clean.
I look forward to seeing you at the meeting. Remember to keep our roads clean!

22、Millions of people go online each day only for fun or to pass the time. Besides the list of things like books, music, movies and televisions, you can now add surfing the Internet as a primary way of entertainment and passing the time.
So how many people actually use the Internet today? According to some reports, about 40% of the world’s population has a connection with the Internet. That’s a huge increase from only 1% in 1995.
The number of Internet users continues to grow. In 2005, the number of Internet users was more than one billion. Just five years later, that number doubled to over two billion. In 2014 that number passed the three billion mark!
Today, about 75% of all Internet users live in the top 20 countries. The other 25% are spread out amongst the remaining countries. The country with the most Internet users is China with over 640 million users. The total is more than the next three countries—the United States, India and Japan—combined.
Of all those billions of Internet users, a large part of users are children. From computers in schools to mobile devices, children are growing up in a connected world. Studies have shown that over 75% of children spend more than two hours each day of “screen time”, which means time is spent in front of a computer or mobile device.
Too much “screen time” can be harmful to children. For example, too much screen time has been linked to many problems, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol(胆固醇) and overweight. What’s more, school-age children who use a computer more than two hours per day are more likely to have emotional, social, and attention problems. Thus, if you’re one of the 75% that spend more than two hours per day in front of a screen, consider cutting back and getting outside to enjoy the natural world.
【1】How does the author prove that more and more people use the Internet?
A.By explaining a rule.

D.By showing the changes of numbers.
【2】Which of the following can replace the underlined word “combined” in paragraph 4?
A.put up
B.taken up
C.added up
D.made up
【3】Why does the author discuss the harmful effects of “screen time” in the last paragraph?
A.To explain why “screen time” is useful.
B.To stress the importance of “screen time”.
C.To voice his view on less “screen time”.
D.To show the difficulty of quitting “screen time”.

24、Donna Strickland was awarded the 2018 Nobel prize for physics jointly with Arthur Ashkin and Gérard Mourou. It’s the first time in 55 years that a woman has won this famous prize, but why has it taken so long? We look at five other pioneering female physicists — past and present — who actually deserve the prize.
Jocelyn Bell Burnell
Perhaps the most famous snub(冷落): then-student Bell discovered the first radio pulsars in 1967, when she was a PhD student at Cambridge. The Nobel prize that recognized this landmark discovery in 1974, however, went to her male supervisor, Antony Hewish. Recently awarded a £2.3m Breakthrough Prize, which she gave away to help under-represented students, she joked to the Guardian,“I feel I’ve done very well out of not getting a Nobel prize.”
Lene Hau
Hau is best known for leading the research team at Harvard University in 1999 that managed to slow a beam of light, before managing to stop it completely in 2001. Often topping Nobel prize prediction lists, could 2019 be Hau’s year?
Vera Rubin
Rubin discovered dark matter in the 1980s, opening up a new field of astronomy. She died in 2016, without recognition from the committee.
Chien-Shiung Wu
Wu’s “Wu experiment” helped disprove the “law of conservation of parity”. Her experimental work was helpful but never honoured, and instead, her male colleagues won the 1957 Nobel prize for their theoretical work behind the study.
Lise Meitner
Meitner led groundbreaking work on the discovery of nuclear fission. However, the discovery was acknowledged by the 1944 Nobel prize for chemistry, which was won by her male co-lead, Otto Hahn.
【1】When was the discovery of radio pulsars recognized by the Nobel?
A.In 1944

B.Vera Rubin had opened up a new field in geometry.
C.Lise Meitner’s teacher won a Noble prize for her work.
D.All their findings haven’t been recognized by the Nobel.
