21、When people get old and have difficulty working full time, they retire and begin a new, more relaxing lifestyle. But what about old industrial buildings? Can they start anew?
China seems to find a good solution for them. In recent years, many abandoned factories, railway yards, warehouses and mills( 磨 坊 )have been transformed into cultural and tourist sites. According to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, there are now 194 items on the country’s national industrial heritage list.
The 798 Art Zone in Beijing is an iconic example. Built in the 1950s as No. 718 Joint Factory, it was gradually abandoned in the 1990s as production slowed down. In 2006, Beijing’s municipal government invested over 120 million yuan and improved its infrastructure( 基础设施)condition, turning the factory complex into a cultural and creative industrial base. Now the art zone holds about 200 galleries, art centers as well as fashionable boutiques( 精品店), cafes, and restaurants, which also earns it a place on the bucket list of many tourists, noted The Paper.
Jack Liu is a frequenter of the art zone who visits it every weekend. “In the art zone, you can refresh memories of the development of Chinese manufacturing through its old buildings,” said the 28-year-old to Teens. “However, in art galleries here you will feel pulled into a fashionable, modern world. It’s amazing.”
Industrial heritage sites, which used to be filled with the rumbling of machines, are now precious pages of the book on the industrial culture of China, noted People’s Daily.
Since these heritage sites are rich and diverse in content, cities in China also spare no effort to explore new ways and models to protect and utilize them.
For example, a beer museum has been set up inside a century-old plant of the Tsingtao Brewery in Qingdao, Shandong province, bringing people closer to the long history of the brewery. Some abandoned plants in Beijing have also been remade for city explorers to take adventures in.
Just as the elderly need our care and love, these industrial heritages are also expected to be injected with vitality through protection and development. “It is not only an inevitable trend of the innovation-driven development of cities, but a necessity for promoting new drivers of development,” noted People’s Daily.
【1】What is China’s solution for old industrial buildings?
A.Expanding their space and uses.
B.Upgrading them to become attractions.

B.To explain the importance of remaking old plants.
C.To introduce the features of industrial heritage sites.
D.To illustrate how industrial heritage sites can be used effectively.
【4】What does the author think of industrial heritage sites?
A.They deserve to be brought back to life.
B.They can be drivers for city development.
C.They should give way to modern buildings.

22、Can dogs and cats live in perfect harmony in the same home? People who are thinking about adopting a dog as a friend for their cats are worried that they will fight. A recent research has found a new recipe of success. According to the study, if the cat is adopted before the dog, and if they are introduced when still young (less than 6 months for cats, a year for dogs), it is highly probable that the two pets will get along swimmingly. Two-thirds of the homes interviewed reported a positive relationship between their cat and dog.
However, it wasn't all sweetness and light. There was a reported coldness between the cat and dog in 25% of the homes, while aggression and fighting were observed in 10% of the homes. One reason for this is probably that some of their body signals were just opposite. For example, when a cat turns its head away it signals aggression, while a dog doing the same signals submission.
In homes with cats and dogs living peacefully, researchers observed a surprising behavior. They are learning how to talk each other's language. It is a surprise that cats can learn how to talk ‘dog’ and dogs can learn how to talk ‘Cat’.
What's interesting is that both cats and dogs have appeared to develop their intelligence. They can learn how to read each other's body signals, suggesting that the two may have more in common than we previously suspected. Once familiar with each other's presence and body language, cats and dogs can play together, greet each other nose to nose, and enjoy sleeping together on the sofa. They can easily share the same water bowl and in some cases groom (梳理) each other.
The significance of the research on cats and dogs may go beyond pets ─ to people who don't get along, including neighbors, colleagues at work, and even world superpowers. If cats and dogs can learn to get along, surely people have a good chance.

A. They eat and sleep each other.
B. They learn to speak each other's language.

A. have common interests
B. have a common body language
C. are less different than was thought
D. are less intelligent than was expected
【4】What can we human beings learn from cats and dogs?

23、The World’s Unusual Libraries
Log Libraries
Alex Johnson writes in his new book—Improbable Libraries,“ The very idea of a library is developing:many of these libraries operate on principles that differ mainly from the traditional libraries. Some, for example, have no membership or identification requirements, and some do not even request that the books be returned.” The oversized bird box in a park in Lowa is part of the Little Free Library Movement, which was established in Wisconsin in 2009.
Phone Booths
This design from the firm, Stereotank, offers browsing shelter for passers-by. In the UK, a phone company’s programme, allowing communities to take over their phone booth for £ 1— means that many have been changed into tiny local libraries. Meanwhile , a solar light has been set in a phone booth so that late night visitors can still read.
Branches of Knowledge
Didier Muller’s libraries operate as hanging libraries: visitors can look through pages, taking any book they choose and exchanging it with their own. The equipment of hanging wooden houses is one of several art projects serving as a booklover’ s place.
Soundproofed Pods
Around the world, architects are designing buildings that bend bricks-and-mortar libraries into new forms. The Seikei University Library in Japan—the vision of Pritzker Prize winner Shigeru Ban—contains space-age soundproofed (隔音的) pods to encourage discussions between students.
【1】What does Alex Johnson mean according to the first paragraph?

24、As the UK personal debt breaks the one trillion pound mark, four people talked to Channel 9 News Online about debt.
Brian
I see the government says it wants to encourage small businesses. What a joke! The whole financial system is in favour of the big boys and they always just want to protect their interests. My gardening business had cash-flow problems last year, which I meant I needed a temporary loan to pay my staff. My bank just refused point blank to extend my credit. My business ended up going to the wall. Now I open the paper today and I see some cable company is negotiating with the banks to restructure £12 billion of debt. There’s no justice.
Lizzie
My parents had problems with debt, which meant I couldn’t get a credit card before I left home and I believe I wouldn’t get one when I did leave home. But then you get out into the big bad world and you’re just surrounded by temptation. A few years ago, I was persuaded to celebrate New Year in Egypt. I took out a loan to pay for the holiday and cover my expenses and then I got a credit ‘just for emergencies’. The next thing I knew I’d spent £3,000 on the card. I tried to deal with the debt by transferring the money onto another credit card, but by then I’d got into the habit of spending and I ran up a debt on that card too. Over the next two or three years, things just got completely out of hand, and now I’m £38,000 in debt.
Malcolm
All that ‘never a borrower nor a lender be’ stuff is all just rubbish, if you ask me. There isn’t a successful businessman in the world who hasn’t had to borrow money to either get started or to expand. If you worry about what you owe, if you let it play on your mind, you’ll never take the risks you need to take in order to be successful.
Angela
We borrowed a few thousand pounds off my parents-in-law to buy our house and now I just wish we hadn’t. It’s just something they constantly hold over us and it’s caused a lot of problems --- like last year when we said we weren’t going to stay at Christmas. My mother-in-law got all upset saying ‘You’re so ungrateful. All the things we’ve done for you and you just throw it back in our faces.’
【1】What are the four people mainly talking about?
A.Their plans to pay off the debt.
B.Their objection to the personal debt.
C.Their opinions on the personal debt.
D.Their reasons for being burdened with debt.
【2】Which of the following people holds a positive attitude towards debt?

D.Angela

B.Lizzie thinks being unable to resist the temptation is to blame for her debt.
C.Malcolm thinks most successful businesswomen are worried about their debt.
D.Angela thinks it will be wiser to borrow money from relatives than from banks.
