21、 The canyons (峡谷)of America's Southwest are deep, ancient openings in the earth. They look as if they formed as the earth split.
Forty million years ago, the Colorado River began cutting through the area around the present-day Grand Canyon. The river carried dirt and pieces of stone that slowly ate away at the surrounding rock. It left a pathway of enormous rock openings. At the same time, forces deep within the earth pushed up the surrounding land. Rain, snow, ice, wind and plant roots rubbed at the top of this new canyon. Below, the river continued to uncover more and more levels of ancient rock.
The Grand Canyon measures 2, 500 meters from the canyon floor to its highest point. Because of its size, the weather at the top of the canyon is often much different from that at the bottom. On some winter days, for example, you may find cold winds and snow at the top .But at the bottom of the canyon, you may find warm winds and flowers.
The Grand Canyon is home to some 2, 000 plant species. Some of these species can only be found in the park. The park is also home to more than 370 species of birds, 90 kinds of mammals and 40 kinds of reptiles. Many of the birds spend the whole lives in the Grand Canyon. Other species depend on the Grand Canyon for food and shelter during large migrations. The Grand Canyon was named the Globally Important Bird Area in 2014 because of the role it plays in protecting many species of birds.
In 1869, John Wesley Powell from the USA explored the Grand Canyon. He recorded much of what we know today about the area. Powell and his group traveled in four boats along the Colorado River. He and his group of explorers knew very little about getting over the fast waters of the Colorado River. In many places, boats could be turned over by giant waves.

22、A new app helps blind people know the world around them
One of the best uses of technology is to make life easier. A new product from Micro Corporation can just do that for people who have trouble seeing. The product, an app called Seeing AI, is currently available for free for Apple’s iPhone and iPad. “AI” is short for artificial intelligence, a term for computers with an ability to think and learn like human beings. 【1】 The app then announces what the camera sees, so users will know what is in front of them.
People can also use Seeing AI to learn words in English. 【2】 With Seeing AI, users can hear a description of not just objects, but other people. It can even tell you about their emotions.
【3】 It can read products’ bar codes (条形码) so users will know whether a can is filled with fruit or dog food. Microsoft says Seeing AI will soon be able to identify banknotes, so people will know whether they are holding a bill that is worth $ 100 or $ 1.
People can use Seeing AI to identify images. 【4】 People even use the app to read signs and get directions, although Microsoft warns against using it for navigation purposes.
Seeing AI is a new app and will not be 100% correct all the time. For example, that someone is smiling does not necessarily mean he or she is happy. The app recognizes text, but not handwriting yet. 【5】
The app is currently available in Canada, Hong Kong, India, New Zealand, Singapore and the United States.
A.People can use the app when going shopping.
B.That feature may be available in the future.
C.The app can identify more than one person in a photograph.
D.The app can identify what is in the image, as if it were right in front of you.
E.With the app, you can point your iPhone or iPad at any object and Seeing AI will say what the object is.
F.Seeing AI uses both a camera and artificial intelligence to identify places, objects and people.
G.With this intelligent app, just hold up your phone and hear information about the world around you.
23、You have probably been told by your high school instructor that writing is an important and practical skill. However, you may not be convinced that the ability to write will be important in your own future. If so, you will be surprised at the results of a recent survey by the National Institute of Education. More than four thousand working men and women who had graduated fifteen years earlier were asked to name the courses they would have taken in college if they had known better. The designer of the survey expected people to name courses in computer science, mathematics, or business. But the course most often mentioned was writing.
If you already have a job, you are probably not surprised at their answers. Many jobs require the ability to write. Despite the increasing use of the telephone and the computer, much information must be communicated in writing. Some ten million people—managers, engineers, sales representatives, and many others— write regularly as part of their jobs. Summaries, reports, reports, letters and speeches are required in today’s work world. The ability to write, therefore, is an important skill. The successful individual is almost always the one who can communicate successfully in writing.
Writing communicates your thoughts and feelings to others; it also tells you something about yourself. Maybe this is what Eldridge Cleaver had in mind in his autobiography, “I started to write... to save myself...I had to seek out the truth... I had to find out who I am and what I want to be ,what type of man I should be ,and what I could do to become the best of which I was capable.”
【1】Why does the author say writing is very important?
A.Because it is a required course at high school and college.
B.Because it is a way to communicate your thoughts.
C.Because it is an important skill for many jobs.
D.Because it shows your good quality.
【2】The survey conducted by the National Institute of Education shows that .
A.more than 4,000 working people value the course of writing
B.many people regard computer science as a useful course
C.some people would study business if they had a chance
D.most people consider writing to be an important course
【3】The author suggests that need to communicate a lot in writing.
A.mangers
B.engineers
C.sales representatives
D.all of the above
【4】Why is Eldridge Cleaver’s autobiography mentioned in the passage?
A.To clarify what writing means to people.
B.To show what good writing is.
C.To encourage people to write.
D.To provide evidence for the survey.
24、“Birds” and “airports” are two words that, paired together, don’t normally paint the most harmonious picture. So it really raises some eyebrows when China announces plans to build an airport that is for birds.
Described as the world’s first-ever bird airport, the proposed Lingang Bird Sanctuary(保护区)in the northern coastal city of Tianjin is, of course, not an actual airport. Rather,it's a wetland preserve specifically designed to accommodate hundreds-even thousands-of daily takeoffs and landings by birds traveling along the East Asian-Australian Flyway. Over 50 species of migratory (迁徙的)water birds, some endangered, will stop and feed at the protected sanctuary before continuing their long journey along the flyway.
Located on a former landfill site, the 150-acre airport is also open to human travelers.(Half a million visitors are expected annually.) However, instead of duty-free shopping, the main attraction for non-egg-laying creatures at Tianjin’s newest airport will be a green-roofed education and research center, a series of raised “observation platforms” and a network of scenic walking and cycling paths totaling over 4 miles.
“The proposed Bird Airport will be a globally significant sanctuary for endangered migratory bird species, while providing new green lungs for the city of Tianjin.” Adrian McGregor of an Australian landscape architecture firm explained of the design. Frequently blanketed in smog so thick that it has shut down real airports, Tianjin is a city---China’s fourth most populous----that would certainly benefit from a new pair of healthy green lungs•

A.Visitors.
B.Designers.

【2】What do we know about the airport according to the passage?
A.People cannot watch birds up close here.
B.It is located on a 150-acre landfill site.
C.It functions as an actual airport and a wetland preserve.
D.It provides migratory birds with food and shelter.
【3】What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.The airport will become a permanent home for birds.
B.Tianjin will win worldwide fame in the future.
C.Tianjin’s air quality will improve thanks to the airport.
D.Tianjin will be able to accommodate more people.
【4】What is this passage mainly about?
A.Airports shut down and open up.
B.China is to open the first Bird Airport.
C.Airports turn into green lungs.
D.Birds are no longer enemies to airports.
