21、   The e-commerce company that retailers talk about most these days is neither Amazon, the American giant, nor Alibaba, China’s biggest. It is Pinduoduo (PDD), a Chinese firm that started in 2015 as an online food supplier, but whose success has driven its market value above $200bn. Last year it was China’s fastest-growing Internet stock, rising by 330%.

PDD attracts attention for two reasons. One is its business model. David Liu, vice-president of strategy, explains that it has drawn on the popularity of smart phone in China to create an e-commerce experience in which people club together to buy products from robot vacuum-cleaners to bananas. During the pandemic this has expanded into a fast-growing business across thousands of towns and villages, in which PDD’s users gather to buy local farm produce at low prices. Some call this “community group-buy”. Mr. Liu calls it “interactive commerce”. It is one of the hottest parts of the Chinese Internet.

The second is the way PDD has broken the record of giants of online shopping. Until a few years ago, China’s e-commerce market seemed a two-way competition between Alibaba and JD.com, a competitor platform. No longer. Elinor Leung of CLSA, a brokerage, expects PDD’s share of online retail in China to go beyond that of JD in 2021. She expects the number of users over Alibaba. And although PDD put a huge amount of money to lower the prices of goods, ensuring the customers from poorer parts of China easy access to its app, she thinks it may turn profitable this year.

Remarkably, the key to its success focused on parts of the market they have been unable to reach instead of defeating its bigger competitors. Although online sales of groceries have rocketed during the pandemic, less than a tenth of the 8.1trn yuan ($1.25trn) farm-produce market is bought and sold digitally. “We are continuing to grow the pie,” says Mr Liu. That lesson applies elsewhere too. However, no matter how a future market looks, there is opportunity for new online businesses because e-commerce is at an early stage of development.

22、Sometimes successful health campaigns can have quite unexpected reactions．The years of warnings about skin cancer mean that Britons are happy to cover themselves in sunscreen or stay out of the sun altogether, but it also means that most of us are not getting enough vitamin D.

Scientists announced yesterday that Britons need to increase to three times the amount of vitamin D they get per day．They called on food producers to fortify(强化)their products with more of the vitamin and suggested people should consider taking supplements(补充物) to keep levels up．They also suggested getting out in the sun for short periods more often, but they warned against “sun bingeing”.

The government does not publish official advice on the amount of vitamin D people should take due to a lack of research, says Dr Birgit Teucher of the Institute for Food Research．But in the US, the government recommends 5 micrograms a day．By that count, Dr Birgit Teucher said that around 90% of Britons between 19 and 64 would be lacking in the vitamin because they only took around 3 micrograms a day.

Vitamin D is important for absorption of calcium(钙)by the body, which is needed for healthy teeth and bones．A lack of it can lead to serious diseases in both children and adults．The vitamin can be found in some foods but it can also be obtained from chemicals in the skin reacting to sunlight．Dr Barbara Boucher said adults should get 5 to 25 micrograms a day．Shortage of vitamin D may be linked to diseases such as muscle weakness, high blood pressure and rickets(佝偻病).

Dr Birgit Teucher gave several reasons for the lack among Britons．Increasing numbers of office-based jobs mean a lack of exposure to the sun; and the rise of becoming overweight means that vitamin D—which is fat soluble(可溶解的)一is increasingly stored in body fat, where it cannot be accessed readily.

Professor Brian Wharton of the Institute of Child Health said that children in particular needed to have enough vitamin D to prevent rickets.

Professor Graham Bentham, an environmental scientist at the University of East Anglia, added that babies who were only breast-fed probably need to take supplements in case their mother was vitamin D lacking．Those drinking milk were likely to be OK, thanks to the fortification of the drink.

The scientists called on food producers to fortify milk, bread and breakfast nutrient to enable people to get their daily amount of the vitamin．Prof Graham Bentham added that 30 minutes of sun exposure to the face and forearms between April and October would be sufficient．Outside these months, the sun is not strong enough in Britain for the body to produce its own vitamin D.

But Prof Graham Bentham warned against spending too long in the sun．“Sun bingeing is well known to be dangerous,” he said．“In any case, vitamin D transformation in the skin switches off after a while so short frequent amounts are better for vitamin D formation.”

23、The learning difficulties clinic at Children’s Hospital of Fudan University in Shanghai has been in existence since September 2020, but few people were aware of it until recently, when a parent noticed the clinic’s name on the hospital’s electronic notification board.   

The parent then took a photo, uploading it to social media platforms with the comment, “Had there been such a clinic during my childhood, I wouldn’t have been an underachiever and my life would be completely different.”

The post went viral, and Zhu Daqian, director of the hospital’s psychology department, who is also in charge of the clinic, has found herself facing numerous interviews and questions related to learning difficulties.

Similar clinics in Shanghai and cities such as Beijing, Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu province, and Wuhan, the Hubei provincial capital, have seen a significant rise in the number of people seeking consultations, according to local media reports.

Zhu said: “We decided to establish this clinic in 2020 because we were receiving a growing number of cases of tense parent-child relationships at our psychology clinic. These cases accounted for nearly 90 percent of the total. Most of them were related to children’s less-than-satisfactory academic performances.”

Most parents are still quick to associate their child’s poor academic results with a lack of motivation or low intellect. They rarely consider the fact that the child might have a learning disability.

Zhu said there are various forms of learning disabilities, including dyslexia(诵读困难), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder(注意缺陷多动障碍), or ADHD, and autistic spectrum disorder(自闭症系列障碍). The key to solving these problems is to identify them early. She added that children with neurodevelopmental disorders often require rehabilitative(康复) training, which is most effective when they are still in kindergarten.

“Most children with ADHD see great improvements with the proper medication and behavioral intervention,” she said.Zhu added that most learning difficulties are hard to identify early and can go undetected until a child enters the third or fourth grade, when there is a significant increase in the academic workload.

Research worldwide estimates that 10 percent to 17 percent of children experience learning difficulties. Despite this prevalence, the topic is rarely discussed due to misconceptions, ignorance, or the stigma (羞耻)associated with it, Zhu said.
