二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、D

Whenever you buy something, it is possible that someone has already worn, eaten, or tested

it to make sure it is safe and do what is supposed to do. But what if you wanted a special suit to keep a shark from hurting you? Who wants to test a product like it?

"I do! " says Jeremiah Sullwan, a scientist in California  "You have to believe in what you sell, right?"

Sullivan. owns SharkArmor Tech, a company that makes a  $ 49400 sharksuit that even a great white shark can’ t bite through. Before Sullivan could sell his sharksuits, he needed to make sure his design would work. Sullivan put on the sharksuit and jumped into a shark feeding ground. "I need to know exactly what a human body could expect to go through," he says. Sharks moved all around him and then attacked his arm. Sullivan felt the bite but no teeth. He was uncomfortable at times, but not painful. The suit works! "

"I’ve now been bitten thousands of times but. never badly," says Sullivan, who now works with shows like Wild Kingdom, and programs for the Discovery Channel’s Shark Week.

So,are you all set to buy a sharksuit? Before you do, you should know that the suit weighs 20 pounds and makes swimming almost impossible--not so practical for a day on the beach. And in fact, Sullivan wants only professionals, such as filmmakers, scientists and drivers, to have sharksuits. Why? Because even if someone is wearing a sharksuit, they could get seriously hurt if they treat diving with a 4,OOO-pound shark as a game.

During sharksuit testing, sharks have thrown Sullivan to a bottom o/ reefs(礁) and tried to take him off into the deepest part of the ocean. "However," Sullivan says," you don't need to be afraid of sharks. It’s actually pretty hard to get a shark to bite you, "

1The first paragraph is written to .

    C. show the main points of the text

    D. test readers' knowledge

2Why did Sullivan get close to sharks?

    A. To see if his sharksuit works.

    B. To study what sharks feed on.

    C. To catch a special kind of white shark.

    D. To learn how to swim with sharks safely,

  • 22、Understand your pet's body language

Body language is different depending on what sort of animal you have chosen as your pet.1Understanding your pet's body language will help you to be a better communicator, as you can even copy some of its movements, expressions and sounds to send your message in a way it understands.

2If your dog isn't looking directly at you, but is looking out of the corners of its eyes so that you see a lot of the whites of the eyes, it might be about to have an aggressive outburst. If your dog is feeling stressed or aggressive, its wide eyes will be accompanied by a rigid(绷紧的)body.

●If your cat looks at you and blinks at you slowly, it's likely communicating affection.3For cats, closing one's eyes in the presence of another is a way to show trust. If your cat feels threatened, its tail will likely be upright; its back will likely be arched, too.

4If your bird's pupils (  瞳孔) enlarge and shrink rapidly, this can be a sign that it's excited or greatly interested, or scared or angry.5Birds will shake their feathers while cleaning themselves ; if their feathers remain shaking, however, this could mean they’re unwell, in which case, take them to an animal doctor for a checkup.

A.Pets' health depends on your daily care.

B.You can do this back at your cat to show your love, too.

C.The context is important in telling which emotion it might be.

G.If you're unsure or your pet's body language, consider reading some articles for your specific animal.

  • 23、In the summer of 2019, Tomas Quinones was undertaking a seven-day “bikepacking” trip, covering some remote desert in Southern Oregon, US. His trip had been marked with the usual minor troubles. But there had also been those moments of unexpected kindness from strangers.

On the last day of his trip, he was riding down a dusty track when he came upon a man lying unconscious on the desert floor. Quinones tried to give him some water with little success. Luckily, he called the emergency rescue team and an ambulance arrived within an hour. “I never had a doubt about what I would do,” he said. Quinones, who’d received some gestures of help over the course of his trip, paid it forward.

The odds are, if you’ve spent any time in the wild, you’ll have experienced these gestures of kindness from strangers or given them yourself too even if they were nothing so dramatic as the aid given by Quinones.

So what is it about being outside in nature that makes people want to help others? The first explanation is that in the wild, there may not be any other help. According to the “bystander effect”, the more people who are in the presence of someone needing help, the less likely any of those people are to actually provide it.

But another idea is that there is something about nature itself that seems to promote “prosocial” attitudes. As a recent study suggests, exposure to nature can promote feelings of transcendence-a sense of connection to other people, to the world around us and to the universe.

When we take adventure into the wild, we are easy to get hurt. And that makes us look at the world differently. So, in the wild, where we lose our normal possessions, surroundings and identities, we seem more willing to go the extra mile for someone. It’s in nature that we can learn new things about humanity.

【1】What can we know about Tomas Quinones’ trip in 2019?

A.He passed on the kindness he’d received.

B.He was saved by a fellow traveler.

C.He got tost for some time in the desert

    D.He came across unexpected dangers.

【2】Why does the author write about Tomas Quinones’ story?

A.To suggest the unstoppable power of nature.

B.To highlight the risks of traveling alone.

    C.To introduce a common phenomenon.

    D.To question connections between people.

【3】What might happen if many people were present when somebody needed help, according to the “bystander effect”?

    A.They might offer help immediately.

B.They might be unwilling to help.

C.They might encourage others to help.

D.They might blame the person in need.

【4】Why are we more likely to help strangers when in the wild, according to the text?

A.Exposure to nature boosts our confidence.

B.We are more clear-headed in natural environments.

C.Fear promotes our desire for connection with nature.

D.Feeling small in the wild makes us tend to act big.

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I was never very neat. Yet, when I arrived at college, I hadn’t come up with any impressive reasons for my big messes. They just were — and my roommate didn’t seem to appreciate their contribution to my bright future.

I’m not sure why they stuck us together. I don’t think they could have possibly picked two more different people to room together. Kim was extremely organized. She labeled everything and each item she owned had its place. She even had one of those cute little pencil holders — and used it! Mine had become a collection spot for bits and pieces of paper, odds and ends. I think one pen may have found its way into the pencil holder but I certainly didn’t put it there.

Kim got neater and I got messier. She would push my clothing over to one side and I would lay one of my books on her desk.

One October evening, Kim came into the room and had some kind of fit because one of my shoes had found its way beneath her bed. She picked it up, tossed it toward my side of the room and managed to knock my lamp onto the floor. The light bulb was broken, covering the layer of clothes I had been planning to fold that very night. I jumped off the bed in horror and immediately started yelling.

I’m sure we wouldn’t have lasted a day or two longer in that room. Probably not even a night, if it hadn’t been for the phone call she received. I was sitting on my bed, angry. She was sitting on hers.

When the phone rang she picked it up and I could tell right away it wasn’t good news. I sat up in my bed. Kim wouldn’t look at me and when she hung up the phone, she quickly crawled under her covers and I could hear her quiet sobbing. What to do? I didn’t want to just walk over but I didn’t want to leave her either. I smiled as I got the idea.
