二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   The German ship Polarstern is normally designed to break up heavy ice. But in September, 2019, the ship set sail from Norway with the goal of getting frozen into the Arctic ice cap for a year. The mission (任务) was part of a $155 million project known as MOSAiC, led by Germany’s Alfred Wegener Institute ( AWI), whose goal is to learn more about the ice that forms near the North Pole. The ice cap here isn’t completely solid, and it’s a collection of floes — floating sheets of ice. As summer approaches, some of the ice melts and many floes break free.

By October, 2019, the ship was frozen into the Arctic ice north of Siberia. The mission wasn’t without its challenges. First and most importantly, the Polarstern had to find an ice floe that is used as its primary research base. The ice floe must be solid enough to anchor the ship and to support all the research equipment the scientists needed to use. However, doing it proved easier said than done. Once the ship was frozen in place, the scientists had to wrestle with the dangerous polar bears that were wandering around. Dealing with extreme cold was another challenge. They also had to face the long and dark polar night, a period during winter when the sun doesn’t rise at all in the central Arctic. In September, 2020, the boat finally returned to Bremerhaven, Germany.

"We are watching the Arctic sea ice die," said the mission’s leader, Markus Rex. The team reports that the ice shelf is full of holes, and that the ice that remains is thin and melting. Recent satellite measurements support that idea. The size of this year’s ice cap is the second smallest ever recorded.

Next comes the long process of studying all the data that was collected during the last year. Thomas Krumpen, one of the scientists, said "We’ll likely be busy with it over the next ten years."

The scientists hope this abundant information will help them make better predictions about climate change.

【1】What does MOSAiC try to do in the Arctic?

    A.Protect the ice cap.

    B.Stop the ice melting.

    C.Study the ice deeply.

    D.Break up heavy ice.

【2】What was the biggest challenge for the scientists on the Polarstern?

    A.Finding the right floe.

    B.Fighting the extreme cold.

    C.Avoiding polar bears.

    D.Reducing the loneliness.

【3】What is the author’s attitude towards the situations of the Arctic ice?

    A.Carefree.

    B.Positive.

    C.Tolerant.

    D.Objective.

【4】Which of the following best describes the journey to the Arctic?

    A.Expensive.

    B.Confidential.

    C.Fruitful.

    D.Casual.

  • 22、Few people realize that it takes the army of volunteers for one young child to have a half-hour riding lesson. I volunteer at Valley Therapeutic Equestrian Association (VTEA) in Alder grove. B. C. , close to the Washington State border. It takes a few paid staff and an army of volunteers-approximately eighty-to take care of a dozen horses and help with eighty or more children during the week. There is a large barn to clean, and hay nets and water buckets to brush and fill. Specific feeds for each horse must be prepared twice daily…. The list is endless.

To prepare a horse for a ride, someone has to bring it in from outside, at times sinking into inches of black, sticky mud during the winter months. Usually, two volunteers groom (刷洗梳毛) the horse and put on the special saddle. Then they lead the horse to where the lesson takes place. There, one volunteer leads the horse, and usually two walk alongside for safety, one on each side. Then the horse must be returned to the barn, unsaddled, cleaned and fed.

Yet so many people willingly give their time-because the children need us. Ranging in age from two upwards, the children have varying degrees of mental disabilities. Some have severe physical handicaps (残疾). Riding strengthens their muscles and bones, enabling them to enjoy a more fruitful life.

Throughout my past life as an accountant, business author and speaker, I volunteered on many levels and in many organizations. However, a terrible motor-vehicle accident changed my life in a split second when my car was hit—as was my head——causing severe brain injury. It was hard to accept a new "me" and her often-frustrating limitations, until I discovered that I needed to do something that I have a passion for. I’d loved horses from childhood, and working with them and with the children has helped turn my life around, making me warm from the inside out. The journey back has been painful but worthwhile. Now, fourteen years later, I am a different, more simplified person.

【1】What is the main idea of Paragraph 2?

A.Horses for riding lessons are cared for carefully.

B.Horse-riding lessons bring children many benefits.

C.Volunteers have much to do for a horse-riding lesson.

D.Disabled children are taught horse-riding in a different way.

【2】What does the author think of her voluntary work in VTEA?

    A.Risky and thrilling.

    B.Tiring but worthwhile.

    C.Funny and enjoyable.

    D.Demanding but fruitless.

【3】What can be inferred about the author from the last paragraph?

    A.The accident transformed her thoroughly.

    B.Volunteering has brought her a win-win result.

C.She's never recovered from the injury.

D.She wasn't interested in voluntary work before.

【4】What could be the best title for the passage?

    A.Helping Children in Need

    B.Surviving the Brain Injury

    C.Volunteering: A Journey Back

    D.Horse-riding: Toughest Lessons

  • 23、   Stanley Martin Lieber was born in Manhattan, NY on December 28, 1922.Upon graduating from De Witt Clinton High School, the 16-year-old boy was hired at what was then called Timely Comics. The company was best known for inexpensive fiction, or magazines. In 1941, when given his first chance to author a story—a short text for Captain America, he signed his name as “Stan Lee”. However, the pseudonym stuck, and soon after, became his legal name.

Promoted to the editor of the comic book division at the age of 19, Lee spent the next decade writing a variety of styles. In the late 1950s, knowing his common writing career, Lee was considering leaving when he was asked to create a superhero character to compete with DC Comics’ successful Justice League.

Lee partnered Jack Kirby to launch the Fantastic Four. The comic book was an instant hit, leading to the development of other superhero characters such as Iron Man, and Spider-man. Unlike previous superheroes who were described as perfect, Lee’s creations were provided with human faults, thus making them more related to fans.

In 1972, Lee, by then the publisher of marvel, gave up editorial control to spend time promoting the company. While television shows featuring Marvel characters like Spider-Man and the Hulk did well, achieving success on the big screen proved difficult. It was not until 2000 with the release of The X-man, starring Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, lan Mekellen, and Halle Berry, that Marvels superheroes became a hit on the big screen. This was also the first time Lee had began the much- -loved tradition of making cameo (客串演出) appearances in the movies. In 2009, the Walt Disney Company acquired Marvel and lifted up the superhero world further with summer blockbusters like The Avengers.

Though Lee is no longer with us, his larger-than-life personality, fun-loving wit, and charm will be remembered for generations to come.

1Which word can replace the underlined word “pseudonym” in Paragraph 1?

    A.Pen name. B.Fiction.

    C.Text. D.Company.

2Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A.All the superheroes Lee created were perfect.

B.Lee was asked to cooperate with Justice league.

C.Marvel was bought by Walt Disney Company in 2009.

D.The comic book Fantastic Four was a complete failure.

3What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?

A.The success of Stanley Martin s comic books.

B.Stanley Martins first appearance in the movies.

C.Stanley Martins decision to create his own company.

D.Stanley Martin s devotion to moving his company to a higher rank.

4Where is this passage most likely from?

    A.a biography. B.A diary.

C.A guide book. D.A book review.
