二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、A team led by Professor Theoder Berger, from the University of Southern California, can now manipulate(操纵) brain cells in rats so that memories stored in the hippocampus, a brain area crucial for memory formation, are activated or suppressed(抑制). It’s said that the technology could one day have medical applications.

In the study, researcher first trained rats to remember which of two levers(杠杆) they pressed first, then to press the other lever.

As the rats performed the task, the scientists carefully monitored the electrical activity in each creature’s hippocampus to find the pattern of nerve-cell activity involved in making a solid memory.

Using the same glass needles they had used to record the nerve activity, they stimulated (刺激) nerves in the same pattern and found that the animals’ performance in the task got even better. The rats made fewer errors and were able to remember which lever was the“correct”one for a longer period of time.

The scientists went a step further and suppressed the rats’ memories with a drug called Mk801, which caused them to forget their task. When the animals’ brain cells were later stimulated with the“correct”pattern, they remembered again which lever to press.

“What’s really exciting about this study is that when they played back the‘good’ patterns—the patterns when the animal got the task right—it did appear to improve memory,”said Dean Buonomano, an associate professor at the University of California.

The final goal, Berger said, is to help people with stroke(中风) and epilepsy(癫痫症) and the like strengthen memories and to help doctors treat them. The technology might even help sufferers of post-traumatic(创伤后) stress disorder.

But first, researchers would have to show that they can stimulate or suppress far more complex memories than the ones in the rat experiment.

“Here ,it’s a simple task,”Buonomano said. In contrast, humans’ memories are very rich and specific…

“We have very many steps to go before this can be achieved,”he said.

    【1】How does“the technology”in Paragraph 1 act?

    A.It manipulates brain cells.

B.It stores memories in the hippocampus.

C.It activates memories stored in the brain.

D.It suppresses memories stored in the brain.

【2】.In what order did the researchers conduct the rat experiment?

a.Monitor the electrical activity in the rat’s hippocampus.

    b.Suppress the rat’s memory with a drug called MK801.

c.Stimulate the rat’s nerves in the same pattern.

d.Stimulate the rat’s nerves in the same pattern for a second time.

e.Train the rats to remember the order of the two levers they pressed.

    A.a, e, b, c, d B.a, e, c, d, b

    C.e, a, c, d, b  D.e, a, c, b, d

【3】When their nerves were stimulated, the rats   .

    A.forgot their task

    B.completed the task better

C.made no errors in their task

D.remembered which lever they had pressed for a shorter time

【4】What can we infer from the article?

A.MK801 is a drug that can be used to stimulate nerves.

B.The study is expected to be used to help stroke and epilepsy patients recover completely.

C.Using the study to improve humans’ memories still face many challenges.

D.Researchers have studied far more complex memories than the ones in the rat experiment.

  • 22、Do you ever get the feeling that you’re being watched? Well, you might be right.

According to a study published in Nature on June 23, astronomers have found that 1, 715 stars have had a direct view of Earth since humans have been here.

The team looked at 331, 312 stars within 326 light-years of Earth, with each light-year equaling 9.4 trillion kilometers. Out of all those stars, only 1, 715 of them could see Earth within the last 5, 000 years, with an extra 319 stars that will be able to see us in the next 5, 000 years.

“When I look up at the sky, it looks a bit more amiable because it’s like, maybe somebody is waving,” said Lisa Kaltenegger, director of the Carl Sagan Institute at Cornell University, US, and the study’s lead writer.

If a planet circling around one of those 1, 715 stars is home to advanced life, they could easily see that there is life here because of the oxygen on Earth. If that didn’t give it away, then the radio waves we have sent out into space would also be an indicator. In fact, human-made radio waves have already traveled through 75 of the closest stars on Kaltenegger’s list.

Why haven’t we heard from anyone yet, then?

It takes a long time for messages to travel between star systems. By the time a message could be received, that advanced civilization would probably not exist anymore.

Alan Boss, a scientist at the Carnegie Institution for Science in the US who wasn’t part of the study, wrote in an email that this long time would limit the chances for different life to exchange “emails and TikTok videos”.

“So we should not expect aliens to show up anytime soon,” Boss said.

【1】What does the underlined word “that” refer to?

A.A planet circling around one of those 1,715 stars.

    B.The oxygen on Earth.

    C.Home to advanced life.

    D.Human-made radio waves.

【2】What could prevent humans from exchanging messages with aliens according to Boss?

A.Human-made radio waves cannot travel far.

    B.Aliens don’t exist.

    C.They cannot understand each other.

D.It takes a long time for messages to travel.

【3】Which word can best describe Alan Boss’s attitude towards communicating with aliens?

    A.Indifferent

    B.Critical

    C.Positive

    D.Negative

【4】What is the purpose of the text?

A.To present new findings published in a study.

B.To discuss the advanced life on other stars.

C.To explain the feeling that you’re being watched.

D.To illustrate how messages travel between star systems.

  • 23、   There is a very long list of rules for the New York City subway. Don’t put your feet on a seat, don’t carry open cups of coffee or soda, don’t take more than one seat... Those are just a few of the rules. There are hundreds more.

With so many rules, why is it still unpleasant to ride the subway?

Some people think that the problem is that no one enforces the rules. Other passengers sometimes try to enforce rules. But you can’t rely on them because New Yorkers have unwritten rules against talking to strangers and making eye contact with strangers. How can you tell someone to take her shopping bags off the seat and throw away her Coke without talking to her or looking at her? It is difficult.

There are other New Yorkers who think that the subway is unpleasant because there are not enough rules. One rider wrote a letter to The New York Times a couple of weeks ago suggesting a few more subway rules. Here are some of the rules that she would like to see:

-Don’t lean on the poles. You prevent other people from holding on. They can fall down.

-Talk quietly. The trains are already too noisy.

-Give your seat to elderly passengers or to parents with small children.

If those unwritten rules of etiquette are written down, will the rude people be more likely to follow them? It doesn’t make sense to make more rules that no one will enforce.

The real problem is that we are forgetting how to be nice to each other. It is embarrassing that we need a rule to tell us to give our seat to elderly passengers. Nobody should need to be reminded to do that.

I say we stop talking about the rules and try to remember our manners. Let’s be nice to each other not because a police officer might tell us to get off the train, but because it is the right thing to do. Then New York City would be more civilized -both above ground and below.

1Don’t make eye contact and don’t talk to strangers are examples of________.

A.New York subway rules B.personal preferences on the subway

C.behavioral habits in New York City D.unpleasant experiences on the subway

2In the writer’s opinion, what measures should be taken?

A.The authority should set stricter rules.

B.The government should employ more police.

C.The citizens should ride the subway less.

D.Everyone should take better care of their behavior.

3The underlined word “etiquette” is closest in meaning to____.

    A.manners B.phenomena C.festivals D.moods

4The author wrote this article in order to____.

A.introduce an unwritten rule for New Yorkers

B.describe an unpleasant ride on the subway.

C.present a real problem of disorder in the New York City.

D.give a civilized suggestion on improving the riding environment.

  • 24、With an abundance of sun and wind, Spain is positioning itself as Europe’s future leader in green hydrogen (氢气) production to clean up heavy industries. But some energy experts express caution because this process relies on massive availability of zero-carbon electricity.

Green hydrogen is created when renewable energy sources power an electrical current that runs through water, separating its hydrogen and oxygen molecules (分子). The process doesn’t produce planet-warming carbon dioxide, but less than 0.1% of global hydrogen production is currently created in this way.

The separated hydrogen can be used in the production of steel, ammonia (氨) and chemical products, all of which require industrial processes that are harder to stop fossil fuels. Hydrogen also can be used as a transportation fuel, which could one day transform the highly polluting shipping and aviation sectors.

Spain’s large, windswept and thinly populated territory receives more than 2,500 hours of sunshine on average per year, providing ideal conditions for wind and solar energy, and therefore green hydrogen production.

“If you look at where hydrogen is going to be produced in Europe in the next million years, it’s in two countries, Spain and Portugal,” said Thierry Lepercq, the founder and president of HyDeal Ambition, an industry platform bringing together 30 companies. “Hydrogen is the new oil.”

Lepercq is working with companies like Spanish gas pipeline corporation Enagas and global steel giant ArcelorMittal to design an end-to-end model for hydrogen production, distribution and supply at a competitive price. Criticism has centered on green hydrogen’s higher cost compared with highly-polluting “gray hydrogen” drawn from natural gas. Lepercq argues that solar energy produced in Spain is priced low enough to compete.

Globally, Lepercq said, “Electricity, power, is 20% of energy consumption. What about the 80% that is not electrified? ... You need to replace those fossil fuels. Not in 50 years’ time. You need to replace them now.”

【1】Why are some experts cautious about green hydrogen production in Spain?

A.It needs large amounts of sun and wind.

B.It has an effect on heavy industries.

    C.It causes conflicts among countries.

D.It uses lots of zero-carbon electricity.

【2】What is the advantage of green hydrogen production in Spain?

    A.Ideal geographical conditions.

    B.The support from government.

    C.Hydrogen production technology.

    D.Well-developed public transports.

【3】What can be inferred about green hydrogen in Spain according to Lepercq?

    A.It is highly priced.

    B.It is easy to store.

    C.It is competitive.

    D.It is highly-polluting.

【4】Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?

A.Spain Manages to Use Zero-carbon Electricity

B.Spain Struggles to Lead EU in Green Hydrogen

C.Spain Takes the Lead in Preventing Air Pollution

D.Spain Replaces Fossil Fuel with Green Hydrogen

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

On a Saturday night, I was just back from rock climbing. That was a very cold night, the moon was high and I was looking forward to getting into my warm bed. My coach, Diana, came up to me as I went through the arches to my dorm. She took me to her home and told me that my mother had been hurt badly in a terrible car crash and taken to the ICU of a nearby hospital.

When I reached the hospital, my grandmother pulled me aside and said whatever I did, I mustn’t cry in front of my mother.

A nurse opened the door that led to a wide hallway with machines all around. My mother’s room was right next to the nurse’s station. As I entered the room, I saw her lying on her side, with her tiny back to me and a pillow between her bandaged legs. She struggled to turn around but couldn’t. I slowly moved to the other side of the bed and said “ hi ” in a calm voice, holding back my urge to cry out.

Her faces were swollen like a soccer ball, her eyes had huge dark bruised rings, and she had tubes down her throat and in her arms.

Gently holding my mother’s cold swollen hands, I tried to keep my calmness. She kept looking at me as she hit the bed with her hand. She was trying to tell me how much pain she was suffering from. I turned my face away from her, trying to hide the tears that were rolling down my face. Eventually I had to leave her for a moment because I couldn’t hold in my sorrow any longer. That was when it struck me that I really might lose my mother.

I accompanied my mother all day long. She was able to whisper a few words, but I didn’t know what to say. I felt like screaming but I knew I mustn’t. I went home and cried myself to sleep.
