二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Many plastic products we use every day are not able to be recycled. Americans alone throw away 42 million tons of single-use plastics each year, and only 9 percent of that waste can be turned into something else. The rest ends up in landfills (垃圾填埋场), or worse, the ocean.

ByFusion, founded in 2017 in Los Angeles, California, has worked out a way to put all that plastic waste to good use. It uses machines called Blockers to shape all kinds of plastics, even non-recyclables, into standard building blocks called ByBlocks that can be used to build anything. Now, BvFusion has built a pavilion (亭子) for a school with blocks made from locally collected plastics.

“Plastic was not invented to be thrown away,” the company states on their website. “Plastic is strong, flexible, and built to last. This is why plastic isn’t the problem. The problem is that we don’t have a good plan for its future, so now it is packed into landfills, burned at the edges of towns sending poisonous smoke into the air, and there are continents of it floating at sea killing precious wildlife.”

ByBlocks require no glues and are 10 pounds lighter than traditional blocks, making construction work quicker and easier, which means no special labor is needed. They won’t break into pieces like concrete blocks would. They also create zero waste to make — 1 ton of plastic equals 1 ton of ByBlocks.

After years of experiments that cost much, the company has installed (安装) a full production unit in L. A., where it can process 450 tons of plastic per year, and there are 12 more Blockers arriving in U. S. cities soon. The company has set a goal to recycle 100 million tons of plastic waste by 2030, and it thinks the number is within reach. “If we get up to 9, 000 Blocker systems installed around the world by 2025, we’ll make it, ” said founder Heidi Kujawa.

    【1】Why was ByFusion set up?

    A.To build nature-friendly landfills.

    B.To produce recyclable plastics.

    C.To make green building materials.

    D.To recycle various building waste.

【2】What is ByFusion’s view about plastic?

    A.Used plastic isn’t taken seriously.

B.It isn’t good for human beings.

C.Too much plastic has been made.

D.The demand for it is increasing.

【3】What do we know about the actual use of ByBlocks?

    A.It needs promoting.

    B.It’s cost-effective.

    C.It’s time-consuming.

    D.It asks for strict steps.

【4】What can make ByFusion hit its 100-million-ton goal?

    A.Its ByBlocks are recognized.

    B.Its expenses are guaranteed

    C.Its techniques develop fast.

    D.Its equipment is used widely.

  • 22、Researchers say a new study shows two way communication is possible with people who are asleep and dreaming.

In separate experiments, scientists in the US, France, Germany and the Netherlands asked people simple questions while they slept. Sleepers would respond by moving their eyes or twitching (抽动) their feet in a certain way to indicate their answers.

“Since the 1980s, we’ve known that dreamers can communicate out of dreams by using these signals.” says Karen Konkoly, a Ph. D. student at Northwestern University who is the first author on the study published in Current Biology. “But we were wondering, can we also communicate in by asking people questions that they could actually hear in their dreams so that we could kind of have a more meaningful conversation?”

For example. a typical question would be to ask what is 8 minus 6. A 19-year-old American man was able to respond by moving his eyes lift-right, left-right—two times—to signal “2”. Researchers asked the question again, and he moved his eyes the same way two times again.

Out of the 158 trials among 36 participants, about 18% of the time, they were able to give correct answers. In another 18%, it wasn’t clear whether participants were responding or not. They were wrong 3% of the time. Most often, 61% of the participants didn’t respond at all.

The researchers write that their findings present new opportunities for gaining real-time information about dreaming. Konkoly says there’s the possibility of one day doing a sort of “dream therapy (疗法)” for talking down people experiencing nightmares. And if more reliable communication methods can be worked out, it could help people with creative activities and ideas. With the help of an awake person, Konkoly says it could be possible to“combine those logical advantages of wake with the creative advantages of dreams and maybe have some more applications.

【1】How did the sleepers give answers in the study?

    A.By making gestures.

    B.By making eye movements.

    C.By making faces.

    D.By using sign languages.

【2】What can we learn from the new study?

    A.Dreamers showed good creative thinking.

B.Most sleepers could give correct answers.

C.It was the first study of its sort in the world.

D.Researchers got real-time information about dreaming.

【3】What does the new study focus on?

A.Whether dreamers can communicate out of dreams.

B.What questions are suitable to be asked in the study.

C.How researchers can help people experiencing nightmares.

D.Whether two-way communication with dreamers is possible.

【4】What is the author’s attitude to “a meaningful conversation” with dreamers?

    A.Skeptical.

    B.Objective.

    C.Doubtful.

    D.Critical.

  • 23、If you start a sentence with, “If I were you...” or find yourself scratching your head over a decision when the answer is crystal-clear, there’s a scientific reason behind it. Our own decision-making abilities can become exhausted over the course of the day causing indecision or poor choices, but choosing on behalf of someone else is an enjoyable task that doesn’t suffer the same difficulties.

“The problem is decision fatigue, a psychological phenomenon that causes harm to the quality of your choices after a long day of decision making,” says Evan Polman, a leading psychologist.

Physicians on the job for several hours, for example, are more likely to prescribe antibiotics (抗生素) to patients when it’s unwise to do so. “Presumably it’s because it’s simple and easy to write a prescription and consider a patient case closed rather than investigate further,” Polman says.

But decision fatigue goes away when you are making the decision for someone else. When people imagine themselves as advisers, they feel less tired and rely less on decision shortcuts. “By taking upon the role of adviser rather than decision maker, one does not suffer the consequences of decision fatigue,” he says. “It is as if there is something fun about making someone else’s choice.”

“Getting input from others not only offers a fresh perspective and thought process, it often also includes riskier choices. While this sounds undesirable, it can be quite good. When people experience decision fatigue, when they are tired of making choices, they have a tendency to choose to go with status quo,” says Polman. “But it can be problematic since a change in the course of action can be important and lead to a positive outcome.”

To achieve a successful outcome or reward, some level of risk is almost always essential. “People who are susceptible to decision fatigue will likely choose to do nothing over something,” he says. “That’s not to say risk is always good, but it is related to taking action, whereas decision fatigue assuredly leads to inaction and the possible chagrin (懊恼) of a decision maker who might otherwise prefer a new course but is unfortunately hindered.”

“Just because you can make good choices for others doesn’t mean you’ll do the same for yourself,” Polman cautions. “Research has found that women negotiate higher salaries for others than they do for themselves,” he says, adding that people slip in and out of decision roles.

【1】What does the author say about people making decisions?

A.They tend to make decisions the way they think advantageous to them.

B.They may become exhausted making too many decisions for themselves.

C.They show considerable differences in their decision-making abilities.

D.They are more cautious in making decisions for others than for themselves.

【2】When do people feel less decision fatigue?

    A.When they take decision shortcuts.

B.When they have advisers to turn to.

C.When they have major decisions to make.

D.When they help others to make decisions.

【3】What are people likely to do when decision fatigue sets in?

    A.They avoid trying anything new.

B.They turn to physicians for advice.

C.They tend to make risky decisions.

D.They adopt a totally new perspective.

【4】What does the passage say about taking some risk in decision making?

A.It will enable people to be more creative.

B.It will more often than not end in regret.

C.It is vital for one to reach the goal desired.

D.It is likely to bring about serious consequences.

  • 24、   Zika virus. Malaria. West Nile virus. Dengue fever. Have you ever heard of these illnesses? If so, you likely know what they all have in common. These are a few of the diseases spread by one of the greatest pests known to humankindthe mosquito.

Much of the time, mosquito bites are just itchy. Nothing ruins a backyard barbecue faster than a mass of these bloodsucking insects. However, some mosquitoes carry viruses that cause deadly ilnesses. In fact, some experts say mosquitoes are a bigger threat to human life than any other organism.

Over the centuries, mosquitoes are thought to have caused the deaths of 52 billion people. That’s half the people who have ever lived on Earth! Even today, ilnesses spread by mosquitoes kill more people each year than war does.

It should be no surprise that many people would like to get rid of mosquitoes. What if we could wipe out the entire mosquito population? No more malaria. No more Zika. No more itchy bumps after a summer day spent outdoors. Doesn’t that sound great?

Not so fast. Sure, some species of mosquitoes harm humans. But others don’t pose any threat at al! In fact, some of these mosquitoes play important parts in their ecosystems. Let’s look at a few ways.

Many of our Wonder Friends already know that bees play an important part in pollination(授粉). It turns out, mosquitoes do, too! Most mosquitoes actually drink nectar 花蜜) instead of blood. When they do so, they help pollinate the plants they feed on.

It’s also important to remember that even mosquitoes are part of an ecosystem. Without them, the food chain would be disturbed.

Adult mosquitoes are a food source for bats, birds, spiders, and small mammals. Without them, these animals would need to find something else to eat. Some experts even think mosquitoes could be used to help humans.

1What do Zika virus, Malaria, West Nile virus, and Dengue fever have in common?

A.They are all pests from the wild forest. B.They can not be cured by human beings.

C.They can all be spread by mosquitoes. D.They are all caused by bacteria.

2What does the underined phrase in the fourth paragraph mean?

A.Kill something completely. B.Bring up in large numbers.

C.Control something completely. D.Rely on something completely.

3What is the author’s attitude towards mosquitoes?

    A.Positive. B.Negative. C.Critical. D.Objective.

4What may the author continue to write about in the following?

A.How mosquitoes are harmful to human beings.

B.How mosquitoes are helpful to human beings.

C.How mosquitoes cause various ilness to mankind.

D.How mosquitoes are eaten by small mammals.
