二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   The jaguars(美洲豹) didn't bother me much during the day. Adonis, our local guide who was leading us deep into the Guatemalan jungle, guaranteed that we wouldn't come under attack from the jaguars. The most recent time he had seen one was more than a year ago. Last week, he had spotted some jaguar tracks, which was probably about as close to the animals as we would get, he said.

But his guarantee meant little that night as I cowered in my hammock(吊床) under the Central American stars. Now my mind turned every soft sound of waving leaves into a moving big cat full of murderous intent(probably to get back at the rude human who had interrupted its life.)And, if it wasn't a jaguar ready to attack, it was a poisonous snake, picking which of my bottoms to sink its long sharp tooth into.

Tiredness calmed my overactive imagination and I slept slightly. Next day, big surprise: no death by either snake bite or jaguar attack and injury. We packed up our stuff and continued toward our destination Mirador, the site of the tallest temple in the Mayan world.

Although we may have questioned why we had left a perfectly nice beach to come here, that night no doubts remained. Just before sunset we took our places at the top of the temple hill. A Mayan astrologer(占星家)had probably sat in the  same place 2,000 years before and improved his knowledge of the Milky Way.

Tonight, as with every night, spectacular pink shades marked the western skyline. The sky darkened and, one by one, the stars shone with a soft light into life.

1What did the guide think of the jaguars?

A.They were difficult to find. B.They were aggressive killers.

C.They were tough to deal with. D.They had close relations with man.

2What does the underlined word “cowered” in Paragraph 2 most nearly mean?

    A.Shrank. B.Skipped.

    C.Relaxed. D.Danced.

3What message is the author trying to convey in the last paragraph?

A.We should show respect to nature.

B.Traveling in the jungle can be dangerous.

C.The ecology problem requires urgent attention.

D.The universe is lasting while human life is short.

  • 22、   Delivery robots, once a sci-fi fantasy, became a reality this year. They' re increasingly being seen as a solution for “last-mile delivery”—delivering goods from a local warehouse to their final destination. But how do robots find the door? It’s not always simple. GPS can take the robot to the right address, but can't tell it whether the door is to the left of the garage or at the end of the garden path.

That’s why researchers at MIT have developed a new robot navigation(导航) system. In the new system, which covers an area of three suburban neighborhoods and one urban one, they trained the algorithm(算法) on satellite maps. Michael Everett, a graduate student in MIT, color-coded the maps based on environmental features-sidewalks yellow, driveways blue, doors gray. He trained the program using both complete images of the landscape and images that were partly covered, since a moving robot will often have its view partially blocked by street features, cars or pedestrians.

Everett and his team then developed a “cost-to- go estimator” algorithm for choosing a path of maximum efficiency (and thus minimum “cost”). This algorithm created a second map, where darker locations are farther from the goal, and lighter locations are closer. A road or sidewalk might be darker, while a driveway would be lighter and lighter the closer it gets to the front door. The front door- the destination-- is the lightest. This cost-to- go estimator map helps a robot make informed decisions on the fly.

The new system proves to be both efficient and accurate. “It is an important step in achieving faster real-time delivery,” says Mohit Bansal, a professor at the University of North Carolina.

Bansal says the next hurdle will be to enable robots to handle longer commands, including commands with negation (such as “don’ t go to the side: door”). Another challenge will be developing robots that can ask questions if they get lost or confused.

“My vision there is that all our robots are going to be able to just understand really casual human instructions like,‘ hey, robot, go grab a coffee for me,’” Everett says.

1Why do MIT researchers develop a new navigation system?

A.To avoid the signal failure. B.To improve the function of GPS.

C.To take robots to the right address. D.To guide robots to deliver goods precisely.

2We can infer that the purpose of using partly-covered images is to______.

A.instruct robots to catch colorful pictures

B.enable robots to identify cars and pedestrians

C.redirect robots when they are disabled by traffic

D.help robots better recognize environmental features

3What is Michael Everett 's attitude towards the future of robots?

    A.Objective. B.Optimistic.

    C.Cautious. D.Ambiguous

4What is the best title for the text?

A.Forget About the Post Office—Robots Can Help

B.Helping Delivery Robots Find Your Front Door

C.Covering the Last Mile—So Close Yet So Far

D.Open Your Door to the MIT Delivery Service

  • 23、I’ve just asked Julie Gray, a biologist at the University of Sheffield, which species she thinks would be the last ones standing if we don’t take transformative action on climate change. “I don’t think it will be humans. I think we’ll go quite early on,” says Gray. Humans probably won’t be among the survivors, partly because humans produce young extremely slowly and generally just one or two at a time.

It may seem like just a thought experiment. But discussing which species are able to survive climate change is disturbingly concrete. As a report stated recently, one in four species currently faces extinction, which is closely linked to climate change. While the seriousness of climate change is undeniable, we can make some educated guesses about which species will have a better shot at going far.

According to Jen Lau, a biologist at University Bloomington, heat tolerant and drought resistant plants, like those found in deserts, are more likely to survive. So are plants whose seeds can be spread over long distances, for example by wind or ocean currents. Plants that can adjust their flowering times may also be better able to deal with higher temperatures.

We can also look to history as a guide. Cockroaches adapted to an increasingly dry Australia tens of millions of years ago, by starting to dig holes in soil to hide. Cockroaches also tend to not be picky eaters. Having broad diets means that climate change will be less of a threat to them.

Furthermore, species called “mobile generalists” by experts can move and adapt to different environments and are more likely to last long in face of climate change. For example, deer in the US are common in suburban areas and manage to live where forests have been removed or are regularly disturbed.

Certainly, some animals would also survive if they could find a buffer: an area that is relatively protected from climate change’s consequences, such as deep sea canyons, underground caves.

【1】What does the author probably think of the answer given by Gray?

    A.Ridiculous.

    B.Unreasonable.

    C.Upsetting.

    D.Exciting.

【2】Which of the following can replace the underlined part in Paragraph 2?

    A.Peacefully wait.

    B.Quickly die out.

    C.Greatly change.

    D.Possibly survive.

【3】Which of the following species is likely to survive climate change?

A.Trees growing in the rainforest and flowering at fixed time every year.

B.Animals good at digging holes and not particular about food.

C.Creatures mainly living in trees and spending most time sleeping.

D.Fishes that do not enjoy deep diving and like to stay in a bay.

【4】Which of the following is the best title for the text?

A.How Climate Will Change in the Future

B.What Species May Survive Climate Change

C.Why Some Species Have Broader Diets

D.Where Species Can Hide in Climate Change

  • 24、   Scientists have long known a fairly reliable way to extend life span in rodents(啮齿类动物) and other lab animals: Reduce the amount of calories they eat by 10 percent to 40 percent.

This strategy known as caloric restriction, has been shown to increase the life span of various organisms and reduce their rate of cancer and other age-related ailments. Whether it can do the same in people has been an open question. But an intriguing new study suggests that in young and middle-aged adults, chronically(慢性地) restricting calorie intake can have an impact on their health.

In the new study, researchers looked at a group of 143 healthy men and women who were instructed to practice caloric restriction for two years, with the aim of cutting the calories they consumed by 25 percent.

On average, the dieters managed to slash about 12 percent of their total calories, or roughly 300 calories a day, the amount in a few chocolate chip cookies or a small Starbucks Mocha. But the group saw many of their health markers improve.

They lost weight and body fat. Their blood pressure fell slightly, and they had better blood sugar control and less inflammation. At the same time, a control group of 75 healthy people who did not practice caloric restriction saw no improvements in any of these markers. Some of the benefits in the calorie restricted group stemmed from the fact that they lost a large amount of weight. However, the results of the survey suggest that caloric restriction might have some unique biological effects on disease pathways in the body.

Calorie restriction may be a useful tool for better health and weight loss, but it’s unclear whether the changes in the new study will ultimately translate into longevity and reductions in chronic disease, said Frank Hu, the chairman of the nutrition department at the Harvard, who was not involved in the research.

1What happened to the lab animals, after the amount of calories was reduced?

    A.More lab animals got cancers.

B.More Lab animals can live longer.

C.Health condition of lab animals got worse.

D.Lab animals will suffer from no disease in their future life.

2From the study, after caloric restriction, what happened to the 143 people?

    A.Their healthy markers improved.

B.They did not get chronic diseases.

C.They did not get lose any weight at all.

D.They did not eat chocolate chip cookies.

3Which work has the similar meaning to the underline word, slash?

    A.Reduce. B.Increase.

    C.Add. D.Beat.

4From Frank Hu’s words, what can be inferred?

A.Calorie restriction is beneficial to weight loss.

B.People with caloric restriction will love longer than others.

C.More people should be encouraged to take caloric restriction in life.

D.The relation between caloric restriction and longer lifespan is uncertain.
