二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Before dipping your hand into that bowl of M&Ms (一种巧克力豆) at the holiday party, think about what you’re about to do. A lot. A new study finds that people who imagine themselves consuming many pieces of candy eat less of the real thing when given the chance.

Picturing a delicious food—like a juicy steak or an ice cream sundae—generally whets (刺激) the appetite. But what about visualizing yourself eating the entire sundae, spoonful by spoonful?

There’s reason to think that might have the opposite effect, says Carey Morewedge, a psychologist at Carnegie Mellon University. Researchers have found that repeated exposure to a particular food—as in taking bite after bite of it—decreases the desire to consume more. But no one had looked to see whether merely imagining eating has the same effect.

To find out, Morewedge and his colleagues fed M&Ms and cheese cubes to 50 university students. In one experiment, the participants first imagined performing 33 repetitive motions (动作): Half of them imagined eating 30 M&Ms and inserting three quarters into the slot of a laundry machine. The other half imagined eating three M&Ms and inserting 30 quarters. Then everyone was allowed to eat their fill from a bowl of M&Ms. It was reported that those who’d imagined eating more candy ate about three on average, while the others ate about five M&Ms.

The researchers then extended their findings to another food group—cheese. As in the M&M experiment, people who imagined eating 30 cheese cubes consumed less of the real thing. But volunteers who imagined eating 30 M&Ms ate the same amount of cheese as those who imagined eating three M&Ms. Thus, the effect is specific to the type of food imagined.

The findings should have practical applications, says Morewedge. One possible strategy for weight watchers might be to spend a few minutes before each meal imagining eating exactly the foods they’re about to consume, he says.

Although he is planning follow-up studies to investigate the potential of imagined consumption for helping people control their appetite, Morewedge says he’s not planning to experiment on himself over the holidays. “I really enjoy my mother’s cooking,” he says.

1What did Morewedge and his colleagues want to find out with the first experiment?

A.Whether imagining eating would lead to weight loss.

B.Whether imagining eating would reduce appetite.

C.Whether picturing a delicious food would whet appetite.

D.Whether repeated exposure to food would reduce appetite.

2What does the underlined part “the others” in Paragraph 4 refer to?

    A.Those who imagined eating 30 M&Ms.

B.Those who imagined eating three M&Ms.

C.Those who didn’t participate in the experiment.

    D.Those who didn’t imagine eating M&Ms.

3According to the findings from the experiment, which of the following may make you eat less?

A.Imagining eating any kind of food.

B.Imagining eating at least two kinds of food.

C.Imagining eating as many kinds of food as possible.

D.Imagining eating the same kind of food you will eat.

4What can be the best title for the text?

    A.How to Control Your Appetite

B.Imagining Eating M&Ms: A Way to Lose Weight

C.To Eat Less, Imagine Eating More

D.The Less You Imagine, the More You Eat

  • 22、   The secret to living longer could be as simple as picking up your walking pace, according to a new study. Researchers from the University of Sydney found that walking at a brisk(快的) or fast pace was associated with a risk reduction of 24 percent for any cause of death.

This effect was even more obvious in older age group, with fast walkers over the age of 60 reducing their risk of death by a surprising 53 percent. Professor Emmanuel Stamatakis, who led the study, explained, “A fast pace is generally five to six kilometers per hour, but it really depends on a walker’s fitness levels; an alternatives indicator is to walk at a pace that makes you slightly out of breath or sweaty.”

In the study, the researchers looked at the results of 11 surveys from 1994 to 2008, in which participants recorded their walking pace, as well as age, sex and BMI. The analysis showed that walking at an average pace was associated with a 20 percent risk reduction for all-cause mortality(死亡率) compared with walking at a slow pace, while walking at a brisk or fast pace was associated with a risk reduction of 24 percent.

The researchers hope the findings will encourage the development of public health message about the benefits of walking pace. Professor Stamatakis added, “These analyses suggest that increasing walking pace may be a straightforward way for people to improve heart health and risk for premature mortality--- providing a simple message for public health campaigns to promote.

“Especially in situations when walking more isn’t possible due to time pressures or a less walking-friendly environment, walking faster may be a good option to get the heart rate up--- one that most people can easily add to their lives.”

1Who benefit most from walking fast?

    A. Cancer sufferers. B. The elderly.

    C. Those who have heart problems. D. Those who have high BMI.

2What decides how fast a person can walk according to Professor Stamatakis?

    A. His/Her fitness levels. B. His/Her ages.

    C. His/Her will. D. His/Her BMI.

3Why can walking fast reduce death rate?

    A. Most people like doing it. B. It benefits the heart.

    C. It reduces cancer mortality. D. Most people can do it easily.

4What is the main idea of the text?

    A. Walking is easy exercise for people to do.

    B. Walking has received little attention until now.

    C. More and more people are walking fast for health.

    D. A fast walking pace can benefit people’s health.

  • 23、In one of my favorite studies on the meaning of life, researchers asked a group of students to write about their “true self”. Another group of students were asked to write about their “everyday self" and a third group of students were asked to write about the campus bookstore. After the writing task, the students were then asked to rate their meaning of life.

The researchers were interested in how much detail the participants provided in their various essays. Their assumption (设想)is that the more detailed description one provides about one's true self, the more likely one authentically (真实地)connects with that sense of self. Not surprisingly, for those writing about their everyday selves or about the campus bookstore, the amount of detail didn't have any connection with their sense of meaning of life. However, when people wrote about their true selves, the more detailed the essay was, the more the person was exposed to the meaning of life.

To live a meaningful life, then, make sure you are in touch with yourself. If you don't follow your own values and dreams, you are most probably following values set by others. And there is nothing more disappointing in life than living someone else's dream. As some wise-cracker has put it, it is better to be yourself, as everyone else is already taken.

Meaningfulness is about connection. While this means that a major part of the meaningfulness in our lives comes from connecting with others through intimate, caring relationships and through being able to contribute to society and those one cares about, you cannot connect with others unless you are first in touch with yourself. Otherwise it is not you who are connecting to others but just an empty shell. Only by knowing what you are, can you start to authentically connect with others.

So,set out to write about your true self and who you believe you really are as a person, what are your most important values, and what you yourself would like to pursue and have in life. Then figure out how you could make that “true self” more the self that is realized in your everyday life and work.

【1】What is the first paragraph mainly about?

    A.The process of a study.

    B.The meaning of life.

    C.Three groups of students.

D.A writing task of evaluating life.

【2】What's the finding of the researchers?

A.“Everyday self” connects with the campus bookstore.

B.More various essays interpret life meaning better.

C.The participants with detailed essays have a more meaningful life.

D.More “true self” description makes one experience life meaning better.

【3】What can make you truly connect with others?

A.Following values and dreams set by others.

B.Being the author of your own life.

C.Changing “everyday self” into “true self”.

D.Being able to contribute to society.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

A.Connect with Life - Dream Is Valued

B.Why Not Pursue Goals You Find Useful?

C.Be Yourself — Everyone Else Is Taken

D.Why Not Build Caring Relationships with Yourself?

  • 24、   Most of us struggle through the time it takes to get a cup of coffee to our lips once our alarms go off. Luckily, this coffee-brewing alarm clock could make those few struggling minutes practically disappear.

An alarm clock that brews a fresh pot of coffee as soon as you wake up actually exists, and you can buy it right now. Thanks to the Barisieur, your morning time will never be the same.

Here’s how it works: Before you go to bed, fill the glass container with water and pour ground coffee into the filter (过滤器). Not a black coffee drinker?

Not to worry --- special drawers keep your cream cold and store your sugar, too.

Then, just set your alarm and go to sleep. This machine will take care of the rest.

A few minutes before your alarm goes off next morning, the Barisieur will begin to brew your coffee. And voila! A hot cup of coffee is waiting for you when your alarm rings and you open your eyes. You won’t even have to leave your bed.

London designer Joshua Renouf designed this invention himself, raising over $500,000 through donations on IndieGoGo. Coffee lovers should act fast and put in a pre-order on the website now, paying just $300. Otherwise, you have to wait until it hits stores and pay $420.

Owning one of these clocks will be totally worth it. Nothing says “seize the day” quite like waking up to a pot of freshly brewed coffee, after all. Also, the machine isn’t limited to making coffee only in the morning. You can go out and return home with a hot cup of coffee waiting for you.

1Why does the author mention the struggle?

    A. To show making coffee is challenging.

    B. To show coffee can make us feel better.

    C. To show the coffee-brewing alarm clock is great.

    D. To show it is difficult to get up early in the morning.

2What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

    A. The Barisieur. B. The morning time.

    C. A hot cup of coffee. D. The glass container.

3What’s the benefit of pre-ordering the clock on the website now?

    A. You can get one much earlier.

    B. You can get one at a great discount.

    C. You can get donations from its designer.

    D. You may have a chance to meet Joshua Renouf.

4What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?

    A. To tell us how to make coffee easily.

    B. To advertise a new product in a store.

    C. To recommend a special kind of alarm clock.

    D. To compare traditional alarm clocks and new ones.

Out of nowhere a car T-boned Esposito’s minivan, _______ her to move backward some 100 feet onto the railroad tracks. She _______ in the minivan, bruised (撞伤) but mostly just knocked out by the _________ and the airbags.

As it happened, Pete DiPinto was getting ready for _______. The first car he came upon, 2,000 feet from his front yard, was the one that had _______Esposito. Once DiPinto concluded the driver was OK, he looked around and __________Esposito’s minivan positioned on the railroad tracks. And then he heard a terrible sound: the bells signaling an oncoming __________.

“The gates were starting to come down,” he told Newsday. “I see the headlight of the train.” DiPinto ran quickly to Esposito’s minivan and knocked on the driver’s side window. She __________ looked at him, her eyes unfocused. “I don’t know where I am,” she said. She     seemed unhurt. “Honey, you’re on the railroad __________,” DiPinto shouted. “We have to get   you off right now!” He pulled hard on the __________, but the door was crashed in and __________. The   heavy diesel train, traveling at 65 miles per hour, was moving fast toward them. DiPinto ran to the passenger side and threw open the __________. “Please, don’t let her be __________,” he thought.     He pushed aside the deflating (瘪了的) airbags, grabbed Esposito’s arms, and__________her toward him across the passenger seat until he could help her out and quickly get her to ____________ behind a signal box a few feet away. Within six seconds, he estimated, the train crashed into the minivan. “It was like a Hollywood movie,” DiPinto told reporters the next day.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

It was a break time at the village school. The bell had rung, and the children had run out into the bright sunshine, wild with laughter and fun. They chased after each other and played heartily, with giggles lingering in the relaxing atmosphere.

All but poor Davy. He came out last and very slowly, but he did not laugh. He was in trouble, and the bright, golden sunlight did not make him glad.

He walked across the yard, and sat down on a stone behind the old maple. A little bird on the highest branch sang just to make him laugh.

But Davy did not notice it. He was thinking of the cruel words that had been said about his ragged clothes. The tears stole out of his eyes, and ran down his cheeks. He closed his eyes to hold back his tears and bit his lips tight.

Poor Davy had no father, and his mother had to work hard to keep him at school. The bell finally rang, indicating it’s time to come home.

At four o’clock that afternoon, he went home by the path that led across the fields and through the woods. He still felt sad. Davy did not wish to trouble his mother; so he wandered a while among the trees, and at last threw himself on the green moss (苔藓) under them.

Just then his teacher came along. She saw who it was, and stopped, saying kindly, “What is the matter, Davy?”

He drooped his head and did not utter a word, but the tears began again to well up.

“Won’t you tell me? Perhaps I can help you.”

Deeply encouraged by her warmth and sincerity, he poured out all his trouble he came across. When he ended, she was lost in deep thought and for a while she came up, gave Davy a consoling pat and said, cheerily, “I have a plan, Davy, that I think will help you.”

“Oh, what is it?” he said, sitting up with a look of hope, while a tear fell upon a blue violet (紫罗兰).

“Well, how would you like to be a little flower merchant?”
