21、Du Fu, one of the greatest poets in China, is popular with most of us. However, Du is largely unknown in the Western world.
The BBC’s one-hour documentary Du Fu: China’s Greatest Poet, introduces the great poet to Westerners. As the first English-language documentary about Du, it compares him to Dante and Shakespeare, two of the greatest writers of the West.
In the film, British historian Michael Wood pictures the poet’s life. He visits a number of places, such as the poet’s birthplace of Gongyi in Henan and the Du Fu Thatched Cottage (杜甫草堂) in Chengdu. Along the way, he meets and talks to people who tell the fantastic stories of the poet. The film also has talks with researchers and recitals of Du’s works by British actor Sir Ian McKellen. He is known for performing Shakespeare’s works.
The documentary explains why Du’s works have been popular for so long. “Chinese people really treasure the recording of history and Du Fu is better than anyone at showing history in his works.” said Zeng Xiangbo, a teacher at Renmin University.
Du lived under the rule of Tang Xuanzong and he worked for the government. But because of the An Lushan Rebellion (安史之乱), he ran away with his family, living a poor life. There are many reasons why this treatment (治疗) is important. Dr. Marcus Finch of the Children’s Hospital said, “Children and teenagers have many changes as they are growing up. When they have problems, it is not easy for them to open up any talk. However, when they are with a pet animal, they calm down, relax, and smile. Animals do not speak and so they do not criticize (评论). They listen and they do not stop the children. Children can talk to animals because they can trust them. Animals know how to keep a secret! Also, the children feel needed because they help to feed the animals and look after them.”
At the Children’s Hospital, you can find children playing with cats, dogs, goats, and riding horses. The doctors just watch and take notes and wonder at the power of pets!

He was shocked to discover that it was a mousetrap(捕鼠夹). The mouse turned to the pig. “Mr. Mouse, the trap is a horrible thing to you, but it is no concern of mine either!” the pig said.
The mouse then turned to the bull. “It sounds like you have a problem, Mr. Mouse, but not one that concerns me.” the bull said.
The mouse returned to the house, headed down and he felt a bit sad. He knew he had to face the trap on his own. That night the sound of a trap catching its prey was heard throughout the house. The farmer’s wife rushed to see what was caught. In the darkness she could not see that it was a snake whose tail the trap had caught.
The snake bit the farmer’s wife. The wife caught a bad fever and the farmer knew the best way to treat a fever was with chicken soup. The farmer came to the farmyard and killed the chicken for soup.
