21、Do you have any experiences like these? When the teacher asks if anyone can speak in front of the class, you lower your head. When you go to the restroom or dining hall, you always try to find someone to go with you because you are afraid of being seen alone.
Well, many people have these kinds of experiences. They are feeling social anxiety(社交焦虑), or worrying about things like talking, going to a party or being the center of attention.
A recent study from China Youth Daily showed that about 45 percent of the 1, 544 interviewers (受访者) said they experienced social anxiety.
Stefan Hofmann, an expert from Boston University, said that social anxiety is “a result of the fear that we will not be welcome”. For Chinese kids, there’s another reason for their anxiety. Shu Man from East China Jiaotong University said, “Most of them are the only child in their families, so they don’t have many chances to practice their social skills.”
“However, you don’t have to worry too much about social anxiety. You only need to ask the doctor for help if you can’t live a normal life,” said Li Songwei from Tsinghua University. 22、Height is just one of the thousands of features your genes (基因) decide. In fact, because you have two parents, your genes provide you with a height that usually lands somewhere between the heights of your parents. If both your parents are tall, then most probably you will be tall, too. If you have questions about how tall you’re going to be, ask your doctor if he or she can help you find it out.
But genes don’t decide everything. For example, eating an unhealthy diet can keep you from growing to your full potential (潜力). Getting plenty of sleep and enough exercise will help you grow to the expected height.
Maybe you’re wondering how fast you should grow. It depends. There’s no right answer. Generally speaking, kids grow about two inches (six centimeters) a year between age three and the time when they start puberty.
Your doctor will know how your growth has been going over the year. Two centimeters here and two inches there are not nearly as important as the height you’re at now, how you’ve been growing up to this point, and what other changes your body may be going through.
Don’t be nervous if you seem to have grown a lot in a very short time. Everyone has a growth spurt (高峰) during puberty. The age for starting puberty is about 10 for girls and about 11 for boys. But it can be earlier or later, between 7 and 13 for girls and between 9 and 15 for boys.
You’ll usually begin to notice that you’re growing faster about a year or so after your body starts to show the first changes of puberty.
【1】How can we know how tall we will be?
A.You should have a healthy diet.
B.You can ask your doctor for help.
C.You should have enough exercise.
D.You can record your growth during puberty.
【2】The underline word ‘puberty’ means ________ in Chinese?
A.童年时期
B.婴幼儿时期
C.习惯养成期
D.生长发育期
【3】Which of the following may the writer agree with?
A.Your body may be going through other changes when you are growing taller.
B.You should go to a doctor when you have grown a lot in a short time.
C.Boys are always taller than their parents when they grow up.
D.Girls start their puberty much earlier than boys do.
【4】This passage is mainly about ________.
A.why the genes are important
B.how fast your growth can be
C.why you look like your parents
D.how tall you are going to be
