四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、What’s the body’s biggest organ(器官)? You might be surprised to find out it’s the skin, which you might not think of as an organ. It covers and protects everything inside your body. Without skin, people’s muscles, bones, and other organs would be hanging out all over the place. Skin holds everything together. It also protects our bodies, helps keep our bodies at just the right temperature and allows us to have the sense of touch.

Your skin can help if you’re feeling too hot or too cold. Your blood vessels (血管), hair, and sweat glands (汗腺) work together to keep your body at just the right temperature. If you were to run around in the heat, you could get overheated. If you play outside when it’s cold, your inner temperature could drop. Either way, your skin can help.

If you’ve been running around on a hot day, your blood vessels get the signal to release (释放) some of your body heat. They do this by bringing warm blood closer to the surface of your skin. That’s why you sometimes get a red face when you run around.

To cool you down, sweat glands also try to work by making lots of sweat to release body heat into the air. The hotter you are, the more sweat your glands make! Once the sweat hits the air, it evaporates off your skin, and you cool down.

What about when you’re ice-skating or sledding? When you’re cold, your blood vessels keep your body from losing heat by narrowing as much as possible and keeping warm blood away from the skin surface. You might notice tiny bumps (凸块) on your skin, and we usually call these goose bumps.

On the island, every fairy thought beauty was the most important thing for a fairy, so the ugly fairy had no friends. Every time she was sent to save someone in trouble, before she could say a word, the person would shout loudly, "Ugly! Get out of here, right now!"

She once wanted to use her magic to become beautiful. But then she remembered what her mother told her, "My dear, you are what you are, and never change your looks just for such a simple reason."

  • 26、Mom was cooking in the kitchen. She could hear the girls arguing in the living room. It was the third time this week that the sisters had been arguing over nothing. A few minutes later, Maria rushed into her bedroom angrily and closed the door heavily.

“Come to the kitchen, young lady,” Mom firmly (坚定地) said to Maria in her best mother tone (语气) of voice.

Maria walked into the kitchen and shouted, “I can’t stand living with Felicia another minute. I don’t ever want to talk to her again!”

Mom called out, “Felicia, come to the kitchen right now.”

While Felicia was on her way, Mom put two chairs opposite to each other but very close together. “Maria, you sit here and Felicia, you sit there.” The girls sat face to face, with their knees almost touching. “Now you look each other in the eye for five minutes,” Mom ordered.

At first the girls moved their bodies from side to side. Mom said firmly, “You must stay staring at each other for five minutes. Each minute you don’t make eye contact means another minute sitting in the chairs.” They both wanted out, so they had to sit there and look at each other.

Felicia looked at Maria’s pouting (噘嘴的) face while Maria looked at Felicia’s angry face. They each thought the other one looked ridiculous (可笑的). In fact, they were being ridiculous to fight and be mad at each other over nothing.

Soon Maria couldn’t stand it any longer and began giggling (咯咯地笑) and so did Felicia. They giggled and laughed.

  • 27、Mukbang, a South Korean word, means “eating broadcast”. It is an online broadcast in which a person eats tons of food while talking with the people watching him or her. It began in South Korea around 2014 and has spread all over the world.

Why did mukbang first appear in South Korea? Jeff Yang, an Asian-American cultural critic (批评家), thinks that it is down to “the loneliness of unmarried or uncoupled South Koreans”. He believes that eating on your own can be hard in a country like South Korea where social eating is a tradition with such a long history. However, eating alone is becoming increasingly common. It seems that mukbang gives people the feeling that they are part of something larger.

Alice Stride, a spokeswoman for the Campaign to End Loneliness, says, “It might bring someone great comfort to watch mukbang.” She is worried if younger people prefer to watch people eating rather than eat with friends or family. But for older people, it could be a comfort. “If you can’t go out, if you’re ill, for example, then perhaps that will bring you a great sense of comfort. On the whole, though, we would like more people to have face-to-face communication. It’s something that won’t change.”

“I would always encourage people to do whatever makes them feel better as long as it is a healthy habit,” says Ben Edwards, a relationship expert, “I don’t think mukbang is a healthy way to have a meal. But if people feel like watching others eat, and it gives them some kind of satisfaction, I see no harm.”

【1】According to Jeff Yang, why is it difficult for South Koreans to eat alone? Because they _________.

A.have the culture of eating together

    B.are supporters of ending loneliness

    C.like joining a larger group

    D.usually have a big family

【2】What can we infer from Paragraph 3?

A.Mukbang helps most people feel comfortable.

B.Older people are more interested in mukbang.

C.Older people should offer more comfort to younger people.

D.Younger people should eat with their friends and family a lot.

【3】What does Ben Edwards think of mukbang?

    A.It is difficult to do.

    B.It is healthy for people.

    C.It is an acceptable thing.

D.It is a popular way of eating.
