24、 One year, a group of people entered a certain area of Sahara. Unluckily they lost their way. In the sun, the wind blew and the sand flew in the air, like the iron sand fried to red, hitting the group members’ faces. Everyone ran out of water. At this time, the leader took out a water pot and said, “There is a pot of water here. But before we pass through the desert, nobody is allowed to drink it.”
A pot of water became a source of belief to cross the desert and a goal of survival(存活), on which hope depended. The water pot was passed on in the team members’ hands. It felt heavy. A firm look reappeared on their faces, though they felt hopeless just now. Finally, the group walked out of the desert safely. With tears of joy, all of them opened the valuable pot with hands carefully, but a full pot of sand poured out slowly.
Under the hot sun, was it a pot of sand that really saved them in the desert? Their belief, like a seed(种子), had grown in their hearts, and led them out of the hard situation in the end.
In fact, there is no real impasse(绝境) in life. Whatever hardships you have suffered, or whatever pain you have experienced, as long as there is a seed of belief in your heart, you will get out of the difficult situation someday.

25、Yuan Longping is one of the greatest scientists in China. Having spent 50 years in agricultural(农业的) research, he has made a great contribution in solving the problem of feeding the large population of China.
Yuan Long ping’s interest in agriculture began when he was still in primary school. Though his parents wished that he could study science or medicine, Yuan Longping chose to study agriculture at university. After graduation in 1953,Yuan became a teacher in an agricultural school in a small town called Anjiang, where he stayed for 19 years. Anjiang was the place where Yuan started his Hybrid rice (杂交水稻) research and eventually developed the world-famous three-line hybrid rice.
During the period from the late 1950s to the early 1960s,China suffered from a nationwide famine(饥荒). The suffering left a deep impression on Yuan Longping, and he decided to make an effort to ensure that people in the future would have enough food to eat. Since 1960, he has devoted himself to the research and development of a better rice varietal(品种). Yuan Longping’s research was not supported in the beginning. 26、One day, Steve noticed a homeless man at the train station. He took pity on him, so he gave him some money. The man thanked Steve. The next day again, Steve noticed the homeless man at the same place. This time Steve decided to get him something to eat, so he went outside the station and brought him a meal. The man thanked Steve for his kindness. But Steve got curious and asked him, “How did you get to this point?”
The homeless man looked up at him with a smile and said, “By showing love.” Steve didn’t understand it. “What do you mean by that?” he asked. The homeless man replied, “I made sure that everyone was happy. Whatever was going right or wrong in my life, I always helped everyone else.”
Steve asked him, “Do you regret it?”
“No, but it just hurts me. Here is an example. I took off my coat and handed it to a man, but he wouldn’t give me a coat when I was cold. So it is better to build your own house and invite someone in for shelter (庇护) than to give them your bricks while you are using them to build yours, because maybe one day you will be the one who is short of (缺少) bricks.”

27、 The American newspaper has been around for about three hundred years. In 1721, the printer James Franklin, Benjamin's older brother, started the New England Courant, and that was what we might recognize(承认) today as a real newspaper. He filled his paper with stories of adventure, articles on art, on famous people, and on all sorts of political subjects.
Three centuries after the appearance of Franklin's Courant, few believe that newspapers in their present printed form will remain alive for long. Newspaper companies are losing advertisers (广告商), readers, market value and in some cases, their sense of purpose at a speed that would not have been imaginable just several years ago. The chief editor(主编) of the times said recently, "At places where they gather, editors ask one another, 'How are you?', as if they have just come out of the hospital or a lost law case." An article about the newspaper appeared on the website of the Guardian, under the headline "NOT DEAD YET."
Perhaps not, but the rise of the Internet, which has made the daily newspaper look slow and out of step with the world, has brought about a real sense of death. Some American newspapers have lost 42% of their market value in the past three years. The New York Times Company has seen its stock (股票) drop by 54% since the end of 2004, with much of the loss coming in the past year. A manager at Deutsche Bank suggested that stock-holders sell off their Times stock. The Washington Post Comply has prevented the trouble only by changing part of its business to education; its testing and test-preparation service now brings in at least half the company's income(收益).
