二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Maximise your meals, boosts your brain

Make the most of simple and tasty ingredients that also pack a powerful punch for mental well-being-and you’ve probably got most of them in your store cupboard, just waiting to nourish your health and happiness

    Clear your head with ginger

Aromatic ginger is a sure-fire way to wake your whole body, including your mind. It’s packed with antioxidant compounds, which help protect your DNA from damage and fight high blood pressure. It’s also a perfect tonic for treating nausea, clearing congestion and banishing brain fog.

Try This: Great ginger into water with a spoon of honey for a spicy drink, or add to a salad.

Feed your second brain with star anise

Star anise contains mighty antiviral compounds and is ideal for treating digestive issues and looking after your enteric (肠的) nervous system (also known as your gut), which is often referred to as the second brain. The enteric nervous system is a critical part of the gut-brain axis, through which your gut and brain communicate. This gut-brain axis performs several important functions, which can have a sizeable impact on your mood. For example, the majority of serotonin in your body, a neurotransmitter associated with elevating mood, is found in the gut, so keeping your gut in good order is vital for emotional well-being.

Try This: In Chinese medicine, people take star anise in tea form, and its liquorice flavour enhances Chinese dishes. It’s one of the big five in Chinese five-spice too.

    Be happy with cloves

The abundance of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties in clover help keep your whole body healthy, but particularly your mind. A study found that the more inflammation present in your body, the more likely you are to suffer from low mood and develop emotional imbalances, so to soothe inflammation is key, and cloves offer an easy way to start.

Try This: Cloves are deliciously comforting when added to a good-quality hot chocolate, and go well with ground cacao. If chocolate isn’t your thing, they make a simple and warming tea or can be added to both sweet and savoury dishes, such as crumbles and curries.

    Pep up with black pepper

There’s now even more reason to crack a healthy helping of fiery black pepper over your favourite dish. Studies show that piperine the main compound in black pepper-can improve brain function. Researchers found that piperine possesses antidepressant-like properties and has a cognitive enhancing effect on the brain. Who would have thought the humble peppercorn could have such mood-boosting potential?

Try This: You may be a dab hand at grinding pepper on your pizza and pasta but, for extra kick with accompanying advantages, add black pepper to fruit dishes. It pairs perfectly with strawberries or watermelon-and you’ll seem quite the foodie!

Protect brain cells with smoked garlic

The potent garlic bulb is packed with zinc, which is essential for protecting the integrity of your brain cell membranes and improving blood flow to this area, which helps maximize function. It’s also an effective tonic for your immune system and metabolism, leaving them happy and balanced.

Try This: Smoked garlic has a milder flavor than unsmoked and the process barely lessens its nutritional powers. We know garlic has a strong taste and smell, but it’s best consumed raw on an empty stomach for maximum health benefits. However, if that raises your eyebrows, smoked garlic can be added to soups and salads or crushed to make garlic butter.

【1】Which of the following ingredients is particularly effective in fighting against depression?

    A.Ginger.

    B.Star anise.

    C.Black pepper.

    D.Garlic.

【2】What does the underlined word “soothe” (in the section of “Be happy with cloves”) probably mean according to the context?

    A.Ease.

    B.Enhance.

    C.Negotiate.

    D.Absorb.

【3】Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A.Taking star anise can improve emotional well-being by lowering the level of serotonin.

B.Cloves are quite delicious when pairing with fruit dishes such as strawberries.

C.Drinking some ginger water may help you recover if you suffer from seasickness.

D.It’s the most beneficial to consume smoked garlic on an empty stomach if the strong flavor agrees with your.

  • 22、A promotion (促销活动) offering 98 yuan plane tickets is being advertised by Chinese online travel platform LY.COM. While such a low price sounds amazing, there is just one catch: The buyer is not told where the flight is heading, nor when it will take off.

The promotion has become a hot topic on Chinese social media as some people have been attempting to book them ahead of the upcoming 7 days holiday. Labeled (贴标签) as a “destination blind box” on the site, tickets are bought through a rather simple booking procedure, in which passengers provide their travel information, select a departure airport and then pay their 98 yuan. If the randomly (随意地) chosen date and destination are unsuitable, users may ask for a refund, but once they “lock in” their tickets, there is no going back.

“Destination blind box” is now a hot topic on China's online platforms. “I believe the youth are a big target for this promotion, because they not only enjoy the excitement of the unknown, but also like to show off their lives through these types of activities. Like this one for example, it doesn't matter if they finally go or not. Booking a ticket and posting about it on social media can still suggest that one has adventurous and life-loving qualities,” said Fan, a marketing expert who has worked with civil aviation (航空) clients.

    A.Disadvantage.

    B.Benefit.

A.It allows them to experience various adventures.

    C.Economy.

  • 23、Yu Pengnian is an 88-year-old real estate Chinese businessman. He amassed a fortune of $1.3 billion dollars during his career but instead of keeping the money and living like an emperor, he decided to give it all away. All of his fortune will be spent on helping poor Chinese students get a better education.

And Yu isn’t the only super-rich person in China who has this spirit of giving. Chen Guangbiao, a Jiangsu recycling tycoon, has given millions of dollars to charity and promises to give all of his money to charity when he dies.

Yu and Chen are among the many businessmen who have become prosperous during China’s economic rise. An American business magazine, Forbes, estimates that there are 117 billionaires in China and hundreds of thousands of millionaires. What sets Yu and Chen apart from the rest, though, is their tremendous generosity when it comes to donating money to charity.

Last week Bill Gates and Warren Buffett came to Beijing. Gates and Buffett, two of the world’s richest men, are also the world’s biggest philanthropists. They invited fifty of China’s richest people to have dinner with them and talk about the spirit of giving. At first, only a few people accepted their invitation. It seemed some of the invited guests were afraid that Buffett and Gates were going to pressure them into giving their wealth to charity.

A lot of people are angry at the billionaires who are not willing to give away their fortunes. They criticize them for being miserly and not caring about the poor and the less fortunate. But I think this criticism is wrong. A gift, any gift, should come from the heart. Instead of criticism, these reluctant billionaires should be encouraged to follow the examples of Yu Pengnian and Chen Guangbiao. Encouragement is always a better strategy than criticism. As we say in English, “You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.”

【1】He amassed a fortune of $1.3 billion dollars during his career… The word “amassed” means________.

    A.stimulated

    B.contemplated

    C.immigrated

    D.accumulated

【2】Yu Pengnian will spend all of his fortune in ________

A.helping poor Chinese students get a better education

B.helping the students in earthquake-stricken area

C.helping his off-springs lead a rich life in the future

D.achieve his aim of living like an emperor

【3】According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?

A.Yu Pengnian is the only super-rich person in China who has the spirit of giving.

B.Chen Guangbiao is a real estate Chinese businessman.

C.Yu and Chen become wealthy during the rise of China’s economy.

D.When Bill Gates and Warren Buffett invited fifty of China’s richest people to have dinner with them, they all felt honored and accepted their invitation at once.

【4】What sets Yu and Chen apart from other rich people in China?

A.When it comes to charity work, they are very generous.

B.They had dinner with Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, talking about the spirit of giving.

C.They are pressured into giving their fortune to charity.

    D.They are both businessmen.

【5】According to passage, why does the author end the passage with the English saying “You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar”?

A.The author wants to tell us that flies prefer honey to vinegar.

B.The author wants to prove that encouragement is always a better strategy than criticism when it comes to charity.

C.The English saying expresses the main theme of the passage.

D.The author wants to criticize those billionaires who are not willing to give away their fortunes for being miserly and not caring about the poor and the less fortunate.

  • 24、As a teacher at Justin F. Kimball High School in Oak Cliff, Jesse Acosta finds most of his students are from low-income households, so they often end up wearing shoes that are falling apart.

“In my very first year as a teacher at Kimball, I had a student and when he would walk, his sole (鞋底) would just come apart from the rest of the shoe,” Jesse said. “The only part that was still glued was the front of it, right by the toe area.”

To make matters worse, sneaker culture is huge at the school. This was the case even when Jesse was a student. Although expressing oneself through sneakers is fun and harmless, sometimes those who are unable to participate end up getting bullied (欺凌).

Although Jesse was aware of this problem, he knew it would take a lot to find a solution. That’s why in 2020, he spent time designing a plan. He even had the perfect partner to help him: his girlfriend, Alejandra Zendejas. As a math tutor and “sneaker nerd (呆子),” as she calls herself, she could not be a better person to turn to.

To find the best shoes they can, Jesse and Alejandra shop at places like Nike with a budget of $30 per pair. It’s not easy, but these two spend the time that’s needed to hunt down outlet stores that often have huge discounts.

At first, they bought shoes with their own money. Later they started a nonprofit called Pasos for Oak Cliff. Now that their nonprofit has gained so much attention, they’re able to purchase shoes through donations and a grant (补助) from Amazon. They’re also planning on giving away $10,000 in college scholarships to Oak Cliff students.

Best of all, they’re still expanding! Jesse and Alejandra are looking for more storage space for shoes in their own house. “We’re just doing things and approaching the inequity gap a little differently from other nonprofits,” Jesse said. “It’s worked out so far and we’re definitely blessed for that.”

【1】Which of the following can best describe the situation of most of the kids?

    A.Physically disabled.

    B.Financially disadvantaged.

    C.Intellectually gifted.

    D.Emotionally damaged.

【2】What concerns Jesse most about sneaker culture?

A.The living cost is getting higher.

B.It causes a waste of resources.

C.Some people may be ill-treated and teased.

D.Some students are unable to focus on study.

【3】How did Jesse and Alejandra solve the problem of money shortage?

    A.They sold a house.

    B.They applied for scholarships.

    C.They purchased discounted shoes.

    D.They turned to nonprofit organizations.

【4】Which of the following can best describe Jesse?

    A.Caring and generous.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in NO MORE THAN 60 WORDS. Use your own words as far as possible.

    Scrabble

Scrabble is a crossword game. There is a board, a bag full of letter tiles, and small racks (架子) to put the tiles on. Letters like Q, X and Z are not common in English words. They are worth more points than common letters like E, S and N. For example, “E” is worth only 1 point and there are many “E” tiles. The letter “Q” is worth 5 points and there are only two “Q” tiles.

The game begins with all the letter tiles in a bag. This way, the players can’t see the tiles. Each player takes seven tiles and puts them on the rack in front of him or her. The players can’t see each other’s tiles.

The Scrabble board has many squares. In turn, players try to make words with their tiles and put them on the squares. The words can only go up and down or left to right. The first player puts down a word, and it must cover the star in the centre of the board. The player must take new tiles to replace the ones used to make the word. The next player must make a word using the word that is on the board.

To find the score, players add up the value of each tile in a word. For example, the letters “S”, “T” and “A” are each worth 1 point. So the word “sat” is worth 3 points. The pink and blue squares have a special value, too. For example, if the “Q” tile is on a triple-letter square, then it would be 15 points, not just 5 points. If the word “sat’ is on the double=word square, then it is worth 6 points. The game continues until all the tiles have been used and no player can make any new words on the board. The highest score wins!
