四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、What do you want to be when you grow up? Have you ever wondered what it would be like to work in a zoo? Zoos are fun to visit, so working at a zoo might be a fun job.

There are many different jobs for zoo workers. One job is to know what each animal eats and how to prepare its meals. All animals need food and water. Lions and bears do not eat the same kind of food. A diet expert (专家) knows what kind of food is best for each animal.

One of the most dangerous and important jobs in the zoo is working as trainers. Animal trainers need to understand how animals eat, sleep and move. Trainers teach zoo workers the safest way to feed the animals. When zoo animals get sick, trainers help the zoo doctor take care of the animals.

It is never too early to start planning for your future zoo job. You can begin by taking care of your own pet. Help your neighbors by pet sitting for them when they go on vacation. When you are older, you can volunteer in an animal shelter (收容所).

Teach yourself about animals by reading books and information on kids’ internet sites. Who knows? Someday you may work at a zoo and help other people enjoy the zoo as much as you can.

  • 25、Dear Anna,

How are you? My name is Cindy. I’ve been looking forward to having a pen friend for a long time. I hope we can become good friends.

I got your name and e-mail from my English teacher, Ms. Sands. These days I’m thinking about what to write. At first, I wanted to tell you what it’s like to go to school here in Minnesota, but later I thought you could look up Minnesota on the Internet and read about it yourself. Then I had the idea to tell you about my family, but I realized that the story of my little brother losing a tooth or the time we got a new cat might be kind of boring. After that, I thought about asking you questions about what it’s like to live in Belgium, but I’m afraid you might think my questions are silly.

I think I can tell you a little about myself. In fact, you probably already learned one thing about me. I sometimes have a hard time making up my mind (想法)! I hope you can write back to me anyway.

    Yours,

    Cindy

  • 26、

A survey made by China Daily last year found that eight of 10 senior middle school students were nearsighted, compared with 71.6 percent in junior middle school, 36 percent in primary school and 14 percent of 6-year- olds in kindergarten. Overall, 53.6 percent were nearsighted.

The growing prevalence of myopia is not only a Chinese problem, but an especially East Asian one. In South Korea 96 percent of people (below the age 20) have myopia. In Singapore, the number is 82 percent. However, in the UK it is about 20-30 percent.

Some scientists think it is not good that so many students are nearsighted. It brings much trouble in their life, such as in the bathroom, the glasses people wear are easily covered by heat, which makes it impossible to see everything. What do you think if you put your glasses down before going to bed, you can’t find them in the morning?

Several factors have something to do with the high rate of nearsightedness in China’s children and teenagers, including lack of outdoor physical activities, lack of enough sleep due to heavy homework and too much use of electronics products.

Biologists compared Singaporeans living in Singapore to those living in Australia. They found that 29 percent of the Singaporean students had nearsightedness compared with just 3 percent in Sydney. The main reason was once again, time spent outside.

“The big difference was the Chinese children in Australia were outdoors lot more than their matched peers in Singapore,” says Ian Morgan, a retired biologist at Australian National University. “This was the only thing that fit with the huge difference in prevalence.”

  • 27、   The woman was very frightened. What could she do? She dialed 999. The emergency call operator Robert Naylor answered the call immediately.

"Please help me! It's in my bathroom! It's moving!" the woman cried. "What is it that's moving?" Robert answered calmly.

"A spider!" the woman shouted back at him.

Robert believes that a significant number of the calls are not emergencies. The actual number across the country is close to 75%.

Firstly, there are "silent calls". The emergency number is dialed, but when an operator answers, no one speaks. Often it's a small child or even a pet who has been playing with her phone and has accidentally rung the emergency number.

Then there are "joke calls", often from teenagers. An operator answers the phone and the caller immediately hangs up. Robert believes these are declining, as there are far fewer public payphones these days. "People are less interested to make a call when they are doing it from their own mobile phone and they know we have their number!"

The police always follow up both types of calls. It's a huge waste of money, the average (平均的) cost of responding to a silent or joke call is around 250.

The great numbers of the none-emergency calls are like those from the woman above. A situation like this isn't an emergency. But this example is far from the worst. What do you think of the following?

    ● A teenager girl in America called the police because her parents had decorated her room and she didn't like the color.

    ● A mother in Italy rang the emergency services when her 16-year-old son refused to get out of the bed.

    ● A Brazilian teenage boy rang and asked the police to remove a video of him from YouTube. In the video, the boy was falling off his bike.

There are many other examples, and most of these are from adults. These calls waste more than time and money. "If someone makes a joke call and the police manage to find them, then they can expect a fine of up to 5,000, and even a prison sentence (监禁)," warns Robert. "But for people whose emergency aren't really serious, we simply try to deal with their calls as quickly as possible," he continues. "The person often quickly realizes their situation isn't really an emergency and ends up apologizing (道歉) for calling us. But if someone refuses to listen, then we have to hang up. Someone with a real emergency is probably waiting to speak to us."

1How did Robert think of the woman's call?

A.It was an emergency call. B.It was a joke call.

    C.It was a none-emergency call. D.It was a silent call.

2What does the underlined word "declining" probably mean?

    A.Getting serious. B.Turning worse.

    C.Getting useless. D.Becoming less.

3Why are there so many none-emergency calls?

A.Operators give excellent service. B.Callers do not take any responsibilities.

C.Dealing with none-emergency costs little. D.Many don't consider it an improper behavior.

4Which of the following is the best title for this passage?

A.Emergency services. B.Is it an emergency?

C.Different kinds of emergency calls. D.Who is to be responsible?
