  • 24、   Since January 2013, many cities in China have seen a lot of foggy days. In Beijing, only five days in January were free of smog (雾霾). What’s the difference between fog and smog?

According to scientists, fog is made up of tiny drops of water and also ice particles (颗粒) during very cold conditions. Smog is dirty air that looks like a mixture of smoke and fog, caused mainly by smoke from cars and factories in cities.

An official for the Ministry of Environmental Protection told Beijing News that PM2.5 pollution is the main problem with air pollution. PM2.5 refers to pollution with small particles 2.5 micrometers or less in diameter.

According to the Chinese Academy of Sciences, two major factors that cause PM2.5 are motor vehicles and the burning of coal.

Poor air has done harm to people’s health. Children and the elderly are more at risk. A report from Beijing Children’s Hospital shows that from January 5 to January 11, 2013, half of the patients in the hospital came for respiratory (呼吸道的) problems.

To respond to the air problem, the Chinese government and many Chinese people have started to _______________.

Beijing announced plans to use clean fuel (燃料) in cars and plant trees. It also asked citizens to set off fewer fireworks for the Spring Festival celebration. They suggested that cars with large emissions (排放) should be banned and factories should be closely watched.

Three students from No. 4 High School in Beijing wrote a report to advise how to fight the air pollution. “We hope more people will join us in making a difference. With all our efforts, the blue skies will certainly return for good,” said Shi Yucong, 15, one of the three students.

1Which is TRUE about fog and smog according to the passage?

A.Smog is known to be the dirty air. B.Smog is formed during cold periods.

C.Fog is made up of drops of water with smoke. D.Smoke from cars and factories cause fog.

    2Paragraphs 3 and 4 are mainly about ________.

A.how to prevent PM2.5 pollution and what PM2.5 looks like

B.how seriously PM2.5 affects us and how to deal with PM2.5

C.What PM2.5 is and how to protect ourselves against PM2.5

    D.What PM2.5 is and what causes PM2.5

3Which of the following is the best to fill in “________” in the passage?

A.worry about the situation B.take action right now

C.know about the smog D.spend time on the environment

4What is the best title for the passage?

A.Prevent smog and PM2.5 B.Learn about fog and smog

C.Make the skies blue D.Protect ourselves from illness

  • 25、   How do you feel when your teacher asks you to work on a group project with other students? Do you like to work together with others or work alone?

The program for International Student Assessment (PISA), which aims to evaluate education system worldwide by testing the skills and knowledge of 15-year-old students, carried out a survey of students' ability to work together in groups. They found that students who do well on tests by themselves are also likely to be better at working with other people.

This finding was true for many countries. Students in Japan, South Korea, Finland and Canada, where test scores are high, also did well in working together to solve problems. But this was not the case for every country. Chinese students, who have high scores as well, displayed just average collaborative(合作的) skills.

"One reason might be that Chinese parents and teachers focus too much on grades." said Zhao Zhongxin, former vice president of the Chinese Family Education Association. "Students have a lot of exam pressure and they see schools as places for competition."

"However, collaborative skills are very important for preparing students for today's society." he added. "Luckily, more Chinese parents and teachers are realizing the importance of this and are thinking of ways to help students improve it."

Another interesting finding from the PISA survey was that girls can be better than boys at working together. They said girls show more positive attitudes(态度) towards relationships, which means they are more willing to listen to others' opinions.

PISA also found that the classroom environment can influence how well students collaborate. In classes where there are a lot of activities that require communication such as class debates, students might have better attitudes towards collaborating.

1From Paragraph 2, we can know PISA is ________

A.a survey system B.a skill system C.a program group D.a finding result

2According to the passage, the survey focuses on students' ability to ________.

A.prepare society B.work with others C.get good grades D.win the competition

3In Paragraph 5, the underlined word "it" refers to ________.

    A.today's society B.parents' realization C.the importance D.collaborative skill

4According to the passage, teachers can ________ to help students work together.

A.give students high scores on tests. B.help students reduce exam pressure.

C.provide more communicative activities D.make girls work with girls instead of boys

5According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?

A.The better grades, the better at teamwork. B.Gender(性别) has no influence on collaboration.

C.Please focus as much on collaboration as on grades. D.It's important for students to develop collaboration.

  • 27、   The British development group Practical Action says the best way to prepare foods for storage(储存) is at harvest(收获) time while still in the field.

Use a sharp knife to cut the fruits and vegetables off and put them on a clean place. Do not put them on the ground. Use water to clean off dirt. Usually it is better not to pick off the leaves from fruits and vegetables before storage. Without the leaves, food can become dry.

Fruits and vegetables must be cool from field heat before they are put into storage. But cooling them in water can spread fungus(菌类) in the food. A better idea is to harvest foods either early or late in the day, then leave them to cool naturally. Some fruits and vegetables must be kept at 0 to 4. Any colder, and they might go bad. Some foods need to be kept at 4 to 8 and some need to be kept above 8 for best results.

Wet the fruits and vegetables so they do not become too dry. The best time to do this is before storage. Cover the foods in plastic(塑料) once they reach the right “critical temperature(温度)” for storage. Most fruits and vegetables need the relative humidity(湿度) in storage to be kept between 85 and 95 percent.

Finally, leave space between the foods and the walls of the cold storage area so air can go around. Keep the space clean. And try not to open the doors too often.

1Where can you put the foods after harvest?

A.In the water. B.On the ground.

    C.In the sand. D.On a clean place.

2Which is the worst time to harvest foods?

A.8:00 am. B.12:00 at the noon.

    C.4:00 pm. D.6:00 pm.

3Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A.Fruits and vegetables must be kept below 0.

B.We should pick off the leaves for best storage.

C.The food need 75% humidity for best storage.

D.Wet the fruits and vegetables before the storage.

4What does the underlined word mean?

    A.容量 B.信息 C.空间 D.速度

5Which order is right for best storage?

    1. leave the foods to cool naturally

    2. wet the foods

    3. use a sharp knife to cut the foods off

    4. store the foods in the cold area

    A.2341 B.1342 C.3412 D.3124
