  • 25、   When you hear the word “hero”, you may think of someone like Mahatma Gandhi, who spent his life working for his country. But there are also many everyday heroes—they may not make any great achievements, but they do what they can to help make a difference to people’s lives. Everyday heroes are normal people who are making the world a better place. One such person is Robert Lee.

Lee grew up in New York City. As he lived in a poor family, he learned from a young age the importance of saving food. When he was in college, he was part of a student group that raised leftover(剩余的) food for the homeless. This experience made him realize how serious the problem of food waste actually was.

After graduating from New York University, Lee and a college friend created a nonprofit(非盈利的) organization called Rescuing Leftover Cuisine. Its purpose is to collect unsold food from restaurants and offer it to homeless shelters(庇护处) and food kitchens.

The process is simple. Using an app developed by Lee and his team, restaurants report how much leftover food they have each day, and then volunteers collect the food from these restaurants and deliver(投递) it to homeless shelters and food kitchens. In the end, the food will be delivered to those in need. Lee believes this is a very good way of delivery.

So far, Lee and his team have successfully delivered over 150,000 kilograms of food, serving almost 300,000 meals to people who need them. Lee has shown how we can take small action to improve the lives of people around us. But Lee says that his work is far from over, “It’s just the beginning. With more restaurants, who knows how much more we can do?”

【1】Robert Lee realized the importance of reducing(减少) food waste because of his _________.

    A.great ability

    B.kind character

    C.study experience

    D.family background

【2】The underlined word “they” in the fourth paragraph refers to _________.

    A.volunteers

    B.restaurants

    C.Lee and his team

    D.people in need

【3】Which of the following is the correct process of Rescuing Leftover Cuisine?

①People in need of food receive food from homeless shelters or food kitchens.

②A volunteer accepts the delivery job by picking up unsold food from the restaurant.

③The volunteer delivers the leftover food to homeless shelters or food kitchens.

④A restaurant reports how much food they have left each day through an app by Lee’s team.

    A.①②③④

    B.①④②③

    C.④②③①

    D.④③①②

【4】What might be the best title for this passage?

    A.A Nonprofit Organization

    B.An Everyday Hero

    C.The Importance of Saving Food

    D.The Problem of Food Waste

  • 26、The night of Halloween falls. “Pumpkin monsters” start to come out. You and your friends can’t stop talking about ghost stories. Suddenly, a surprising sound comes from upstairs. And your bookshelf begins to creak(嘎吱响) …

Feeling scared? It’s time to learn some science! Then you will find that all the “ghosts” are just simple physics(物理)!

    Squeak, creak

At night, we often hear furniture(家具) make some creaking sounds. That’s because things expand when heated and contract when cooled(热胀冷缩). During the day, the temperature is high. At night, the air cools down. The change in temperature makes the furniture expand and contract and make sounds. The same science goes for the strange sounds from your TV. When you turn it on, the TV becomes hot. After turning it off, it cools down and contracts.

    Bouncing marbles

Have you ever heard the noise of “marbles(玻璃弹珠)” from upstairs? That’s not really children playing marbles. Scientists say the sound may come from pipes in the building. When water goes through a pipe, it pushes the air inside. That could make the sound of a dropping marble.

Mold(霉菌) might also be the “ghost” behind the wall. It grows in the cracks(缝隙) and eats the cement(水泥). Then the rebar(钢筋) will stretch a little. That makes the sound of dropping marbles, too.

    Humming sound

There are some low-frequency(低频的) sounds people can’t hear. But studies showed that some people can sense this kind of sound. They will feel scared and uneasy. Living near a source(源头) of such sounds could make you feel like someone is watching you.

Why do we love to be scared?

Cold sweat(汗), a fast heartbeat(心跳) … you feel uncomfortable when you are scared. But people still love watching scary movies or going to a “ghost house”. Why? When humans face something scary, some chemicals(化学物质) come out in the body. They help humans run away. These chemicals make your heart beat faster. Once the danger is gone, another chemical comes out. It makes you feel happy and relaxed. That’s why when you hear someone shout “Boo!”, you’ll first freeze up(僵住) and then laugh it off.

【1】What’s the main purpose of the text?

A.To talk about some ghost stories.

B.To prove that there are no ghosts in the world.

C.To show some new findings about physics.

    D.To explain something with science.

【2】What does the underlined word “stretch” most probably mean?

    A.spread

    B.attack

    C.break

    D.rise

【3】Why do people love watching scary movies according to the passage?

A.Because they feel comfortable to do that.

B.Because chemicals in the body make them do that.

C.Because they enjoy the feeling of cold sweat and a fast heartbeat.

D.Because it will bring fun to them afterwards.

【4】What can we learn from the passage?

A.Low temperature makes the furniture expand and contract.

B.There are marbles in the pipes in the building.

C.Not everyone can sense low-frequency sounds.

D.People only feel happy and relaxed after being scared.

  • 27、阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有一项为多余选项。

Teachers are often considered to be engineers of the human soul. 【1】 But there’s one person in China who is called the “teacher of teachers”.

He is Chinese educator Tao Xingzhi. Last year marked the 130 anniversary of his birth. People in different parts of China commemorated (纪念) Tao by visiting his memorial halls or holding meetings to reflect on his thoughts on education.

Born in Anhui province, China, 1891, Tao studied at Columbia University, US, in 1914. 【2】. But when Tao returned to China in 1917 and began his own career as an educator, he did not blindly copy Dewey’s education method or theories. For Tao, education is an active process in real-life experiences rather than one of telling and being told. He proposed (提出) “unity (融合) of teaching, learning, and reflective acting”.

    【3】

After conducting surveys in Beijing, Tianjin and Shanghai in 1921, Tao was surprised to learn that the rate of urban illiteracy (文盲) in China went beyond 70 percent. 【4】 To deal with the lack of teachers and money, in 1927, Tao set up Xiaozhuang Normal collage (晓庄师范学院) in the northern suburbs of Nanjing to train teachers and educators, most of whom became teachers at rural schools.

【5】 He set up Yucai Middle School in the suburbs of Chongqing and offered free education to refugee (避难) children after the Japanese invasion of China began in 1937.

Maybe Tao’s motto is the best explanation for his life, “Giving a whole heart, yet taking nothing in return, not even a leaf of grass.”

A.There he studied educational philosophy under the guidance of John Dewey, an American philosopher and educational reformer (改革家).

B.Even during the anti-Japanese war, Tao never forgot his ambition.

C.To solve the problem, Tao organized young workers and farmers to study while working.

D.They are tasked with the mission to spread knowledge ideas and truth.

E.On the voyage (航行) of life, he kindled the light of hope for everyone.

F.Apart from reforming education methods, Tao also tried his best to promote mass education (大众教育).
