This house is in Lebanon and is in the shape of a plane. It has small windows, so it has little light inside. But in a warm country, small windows keep a house cool in summer.

A Japanese company made this football-shaped house in 2006. It has 32 sides and four legs and can sit on top of the water. It’s small but has big windows, so there is enough light available for people who live in it.

It’s in Mexico. The walls and the roof(屋顶)of the house are a part of a big rock. The house was built over 30 years ago. We can’t see inside, but it looks quite cool and peaceful.

In 1968, group of swimmers first had the idea to build this small house on a rock in the middle of the River Drina in Serbia. It’s small and hard to get there. The house is cold in winter, so people live in it mostly in summer.

【3】The house in Mexico is made of grass and wood.

【4】You can find a small house in the middle of the River Drina.

【5】From the passage, we know the four houses all get little light.

  • 26、The idea of low material needs, low consumption (消费) and refusing to work, marry and have children, known as a “lying down” lifestyle, recently struck a chord with many young Chinese who are eager to take a break to breathe in this highly-competitive society.

Many millennials (千一代) and Generation Zs (Z一代) complained to the Global Times that burdens (负担,压力) including work stress, family disputes and financial pressure, have pushed them “against the wall”. They said they hate the “involution(内卷)”, joking that they would rather give up some of what they have than get trapped in an endless competition against peers.

“Instead of always following the ‘fine tradition’ of struggle, endure and sacrifice (牺牲) to bear the stresses, they prefer a temporary lying down as relief and adjustment (调整),” said a scholar, “No wonder that some young people, under the growing pressures from child-raising to paying the mortgage (按揭) today, would try to live in a simple way and leave the worries behind.”

Interestingly, most of millennials and Gen Zs reached by the Global Times, who consider themselves big fans of the lying down belief, hold the view that they only accept a temporary lying down as a short-time rest. It is true that with the great improvement of living conditions, some Chinese youth have partly lost the spirit of hardship and are not willing to bear too much hard work. But in fact, lying down is not completely comfortable. Young people who lie down always feel bad about their loss of fight far beyond their reach.

“Young people on campus have both expectations and confusion about their future, but most of us have refused to set ourselves up in chains to waste opportunities and challenges,” a graduate student told the Global Tines. “It’s no use running away. I have to ‘stand up’ and face the reality sooner or later.”

【1】What might have caused the “lying down” lifestyle among the young?

    A.Improvements in living conditions.

B.Growing pressure from family and social life.

    C.Increasing material needs from families.

    D.Short-time to failure in competitions

【2】What does the underlined phrase in paragraph 1 mean?

    A.Warned.

    B.Disappointed.

    C.Touched.

    D.Pleased.

【3】What’s the scholar’s toward the “lying down” group?

    A.Understanding

    B.Unacceptable.

    C.Supportive.

    D.Unclear.

【4】What can be inferred about the young generation from the text?

A.They never really drop their responsibilities.

B.They really enjoy the “lying down” lifestyle.

C.They find their dreams far beyond their reach.

D.They would rather escape than take challenges.

【5】The best title of the passage could be __________.

    A.New lifestyle of youth

    B.Lost spirit of fight

    C.Stop to take a break

    D.Lie down or stand up?

  • 27、   As we age, our ability to think and remember starts to become worse. But not everyone. Some of us are super-agers, who are over the age of 80 and have the brain of much younger people.

Scientists know that parts of the brain become smaller in size with age. But in super-agers that goes much slower. In her recent study, Emily Rogalski, a neuroscientist (神经科学家), showed that super-agers have young brains. The area of the brain for attention and memory was shown to be thicker in super-agers. “When we look at a super-ager’s brain, we see that it looks more like a 50-year-old brain than an 80-year-old one.”

Scientists say super-agers have several things in common, including an active lifestyle. Many travel and play sports. They are often big readers. And they usually have healthy relationships and spend time with friends. “Growing old,” she adds, “does not have to be depressing and sad. Perhaps, if we expect a little better from ourselves, we will understand that not all aging makes us doom and gloom (愁闷).” Rogalski jokingly said that super-agers do not grow on trees — meaning they are special and few. She says she wants to find out why a super-ager’s mind is working so well and not aging as quickly as most.

The science behind super-aging is a new, but growing field. Scientists in the research offer this advice as we age: Stay active. Learn new things. Challenge yourself. Develop healthy relationships.

1In Emily Rogalski's recent study, what does she find?

A.When people get older, the ability to think and remember starts to become worse.

B.Super-agers have nothing in common with each other.

C.Super-ager’s brain looks younger that it really is.

D.The area of the brain for attention and memory was shown to be thinner in super-agers.

2Where will you probably read this article?

    A.In a math book.

    B.In a love story.

    C.In a health research report.

    D.In a sports magazine.

3What can we infer from the passage?

A.Scientists haven’t found out all the secrets to super-aging.

B.Super-agers have several things in common, including an active lifestyle.

C.If people feel sad more often, they probably will live longer.

D.If a person lives longer than 100 years old, he will be very wise.

4Which of the following shows the writer’s idea?

    A.

    B.

    C.

    D.
