  • 22、As they migrate(迁移), butterflies and moths(飞蛾) choose the winds they want to fly with, and they change their body positions if they start floating in the wrong direction. This new finding suggests that insects may employ some of the same methods that birds use for traveling long distances. Scientists have long thought that insects were simply at the mercy of the wind.

Fascinating as their skills of flight are, migrating behavior has been difficult to study in insects because many long distant trips happen thousands of feet above ground. Only recently have scientists developed technologies that can detect such little creatures at such great heights.

To their surprise, though, the insects weren’t passive but active travelers on the winds. In autumn, for example, most light winds blew from the east, but the insects somehow sought out ones that carried them south and they positioned themselves to navigate(导航) directly to their wintering homes.

Even in the spring, when most winds flowed northward, the insects didn’t always go with the flow. If breezes weren’t blowing in the exact direction they wanted to go, the insects changed their body positions to compensate(抵消). Many migrating birds do the same thing.

The study also found butterflies and moths actively flew within the air streams that pushed them along. By adding flight speeds to wind speeds, the scientists calculated that butterflies and moths can travel as fast as 100 kilometers an hour. The findings may have real-world applications.

With climate warming, migrating insects are growing in number. Knowing how and when these pests move could help when farmers decide when to spray their crops.

1What’s the main idea of the text?

    A. Insects migrate with the seasons

    B. Wind helps insects greatly in migrating

    C. insects have real direction

    D. Scientists have trouble in observing insects

    2Scientists originally thought that   .

    A. insects always waited for their favorable winds

    B. insects chose the winds they wanted to ride

    C. insects were just blown about by the wind

    D. insects positioned themselves in the winds

3It is not easy to study the migrating behavior of the insects because   .

    A. the little creatures can fly very fast

    B. their flight is long and high above ground

    C. the wind’s direction is hard to foresee

    D. they have no regular migrating courses

4According to the passage, the findings can   .

    A. increase insects in number

    B. instruct farmers when to spray

    C. prevent climate warming

    D. help protect insects

  • 23、I’m 16. On a recent night, while I was busy thinking about what to do over the weekend, I accidentally heard my parents talking about my future in the bedroom.

My dad was upset — not the usual stuff that a lot of parents worry about, like which college I’m going to, how far away it is from home and how much it’s going to coat. Instead, he was upset about the world for me. He was worried that there will be a global energy crisis, a nuclear explosion set off in anger and an infectious disease that kills millions in the world.

As I lay on the living room sofa, listening to their conversation and starting to worry about the future my father was describing, I found myself looking at some old family photos. There was a picture of my grandfather in his army uniform. Next to his picture were photos of my great-grandparents, two poor black immigrants. Seeing those pictures made me feel a lot better, I believe tomorrow will be better than today — that the world my generation grows into is going to get better, not worse. Those pictures helped me understand why.

I considered some of the awful things my grandparents and great-grandparents had seen in their lifetimes: two world wars, a nuclear bomb and killer flu. But they saw other things, too, better things: the end of two world wars, the polio vaccine and passage of the civil rights laws. I believe that my generation will see better things, too — that we will witness the time when AIDS is cured and cancer is defeated.

Ever since I was a little kid, whenever I’ve had a lousy day, my dad would put his arms around me and promise me that “tomorrow will be a better day”.

As I listened to my dad talking that night, so worried about what the future holds for me and my generation, I wanted to put my arms around him, and tell him what he always told me, “Don’t worry, Dad, tomorrow will be a better day.” This, I do believe.

【1】What was the author’s father worried about?

    A.The quality of education.

    B.The danger of nuclear energy.

    C.The rising medical costs.

    D.The worsening global problems.

    A.doctor

    B.soldier

    C.scientist

    D.civil rights activist

【3】Which of the following cam replace the underlined word “lousy” in paragraph 5?

    A.Cold.

    B.Happy.

    C.Bad.

A.Tomorrow Will Be a Better Day

B.I Am Proud of My Family History

C.I Want to Have a Talk With My Parents

D.My Parents Are Worried About My Future
