21、Is there anything worse than desperately needing sleep and not being able to get it? It is not just a matter of feeling tired. 【1】 . The silent sleep-loss epidemic is the greatest public health challenge we face in the 21st century. Fortunately, science has begun solving sleep’s mysteries. We’ve compiled many of the ideas here. Our prescription: Read it and sleep.
Don’t Go Towards the Light.
【2】. Our brains react to the blue light emitted by computers, smartphones and even LED bulbs much as they do to daylight – as a signal to reduce melatonin production and stay alert. If you can’t avoid screens in the two or three hours before you head to bed, try wearing amber-tinted glasses. It shows that those who wear blue light -blocking glasses before bedtime sleep 30 minutes more at night. You can find them online for less than $40.
Meditate
Besides decreasing the anxiety that can keep you from falling asleep, meditation may actually help your brain in much the same way sleep does. In a small 2010 study, research found that people improved their sleep after only 40 minutes of meditation, while people who meditated for several hours a day appeared to need less sleep than non-meditators. The researchers’ theory is that in both meditation and non-REM sleep, neurons in the brain fire in a more synchronous pattern than they do during waking hours. 【3】.
Check for the serious cause
In obstructive sleep apnea, the muscles in the back of the throat relax too much, blocking breathing. 【4】. When left untreated, sleep apnea can strain the cardiovascular system and raise the chances of developing heart problems. If you think you may be at risk, ask your doctor about taking a home sleep test. Your doctor also may suggest a deep-breathing practice, losing weight, quitting smoking or training yourself to sleep on your side. A dentist can fit you with an oral appliance that relieves the problem by bringing your jaw forward. 【5】.
A.That is because this synchronicity may reset neurons and reduce information overload.
B.All seem like small sacrifices to give you a full night’s sleep for a change.
C.Tapping on your phone or laptop right up until bedtime is definitely a bad way.
D.One common treatment for this disorder is a continuous positive airway pressure machine, which uses a hose and mask to deliver constant air pressure.
E.This causes drops in blood-oxygen levels—a common sleep disrupter and potentially a dangerous one.
F.Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia helps you identify and address the root of your problem.
G.Over the long run, sleep deprivation can contribute to depression, obesity, diabetes, stroke and cancer.
22、 SHANGHAI---Within 48 hours, 61 artists from 13 countries sent their videos supporting China’s ongoing campaign to fight the novel coronavirus (新型冠状病毒) via their Chinese partner---ASK, a Shanghai-based international theater presenter committed to introducing partner theater productions for young audiences to China.
Most of the artists showed in their videos the slogan:”stay strong! We are with you, China !”
ASK planned to introduce top-class performances to a special venue at the Tianjin Grand Theater since this February, but this had to be postponed due to the outbreak of the epidemic(传染病)。
The artists have shown strong confidence in China as well as Tianjin in their efforts to combat(对抗) the virus.
Within the video, Yvette Hardie, president of Assitej, the International Association of Theater for Children and Young People affiliated(隶属的) to UNESCO, took the initiative in responding to the campaign, joined by a large group of artists from leading theater organizations around the world, including the Edinburgh Children’s Festival and Australian Windmill Theater, to name a few.

23、What's the Mere Exposure Effect?
Has it ever occurred to you that you started liking that song you used to hate because you had listened to it repeatedly? Have you ever noticed how, the more time you spend with a person, the more pleasant he/she becomes? 【1】 Also known as the familiarity principle, this effect explains why, by repeatedly exposing ourselves to a new stimulus, our response to it becomes more positive.
Robert Zajonc is one of the authors who studied this particular psychological effect. He proved the presence of this preference in the face of stimuli of a very diverse nature. Words, sounds, photographs of faces… 【2】
Researchers conducted a study to test the influence of this effect on the liking for certain foods. For this, they gave a group of students several juices they didn't know until that moment. 【3】 When asked which ones they liked best, there was a clear tendency to judge those they drank the most as more positive.
Fechner, a German psychologist, the father of some current psychophysical theories, offers an explanation for this effect. 【4】 But this "newness phobia" fades away as you repeatedly expose yourself to the no-longer-new stimuli.
However, you must keep in mind that you can get bored if repeated exposure to the stimulus becomes excessive. 【5】 And if you watch the same movie every day, it'll lose its charm.
This principle of familiarity is the foundation of many of your preferences, regardless of your greater or lesser taste for adventure and risk. The products you buy, the places you frequent, and the people you like can all be affected by this principle. Therefore, it's convenient to be aware of its influence on your mind.
A.This is what the mere-exposure effect is about.
B.The reason for the mere exposure effect is uncertain.
C.Some tried them five times, others 10, and others 15
D.People tend to react with fear or anxiety to new elements.
E.If you eat the same thing every day, you'll end up hating it.
F.In all cases, people seem to favor those most familiar to them.
G.The effect happens due to their fear of new challenges and threats.
24、You’re doing homework online for a science class. A question appears: Do newborn babies see the world in black and white? You don’t know the answer. Do you google it?
①Searching online for the answer may get you a better grade on the homework. But it won’t necessarily help you learn. Researchers note that students who usually receive higher marks on the homework but lower test grades are much more likely to use the Internet for answers while completing their homework. With these findings in mind, the researchers are questioning the validity of homework as a useful learning tool.
Glass, a psychologist, discovered this from analyzing homework and the grades on tests that he gave college students who took his courses from 2008 to 2017. He gave his students a series of online homework tasks. In 2008, only around 3 out of 20 students performed better on their homework than on the exam. By 2017, more than half of the students performed this way. Glass wondered what caused this result. ②So he thought about what had changed over the 10 years. One big thing was the rise of smartphones. They existed in 2008, but were not common. Now almost everyone carries one. ③So it would be easier today to quickly go online and find the answer to almost any homework question. But students can’t use phones during an exam. And that might explain why they aren’t doing that well on the tests.
To test this, Glass and a co-author Kang asked students in 2017 and 2018 whether they came up with their homework answers themselves or looked them up. ④Students who tended to look up answers also tended to do better on homework than their exams.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
When I was about 12, I had an enemy, a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings. Week by week, little by little, her list grew: I was very thin; I wasn't a good student; I talked too much; I was too proud; I didn't like to help others; I didn't finish my homework; I didn't care for anyone and so on. I tried to hear all these as long as I could. At last, I became very angry. And I was too upset and didn't know what to do next. I felt I was the worst girl in the world. Life was hard for me at that time. I ran to my father with tears in my eyes for help.
He listened to me quietly, and then he asked, “Are the things she said true or not? Janet, didn't you ever wonder what you're really like? Well, you now have that girl's opinion. That is a good thing. Go and make a list of everything she said and mark the points that are true. Pay no attention to the other things she said. That is OK.”
Then I did as my father told me. To my great surprise, I discovered that about half of the things she said to me were true. Some of them I couldn't change (like being very thin), but a good number of the things I could—and suddenly I wanted to change. For the first time I go to fairly clear picture of myself. I never feel upset now.
I brought the list back to Daddy. He refused to look at it. I felt very surprised.
Paragraph 1:
“That's just for you,” he said.
