21、Before Sydney’s 2000 Olympic Games, Eric Moussambani had never set foot outside of his home country, the tiny nation of Equatorial Guinea where most citizens get by on less than one dollar a day.
Having secured his entry into the Games with the help of a wild card, Moussambani set about teaching himself to swim. He had no coach, no lanes, and no ways of tracking his efforts. The only pool available belonged to a local hotel, and they allowed him to use it between 5 and 6 am, just three times a week. Before Sydney he had never sel eyes on an Olympic pool, let alone swum in one.
When the day came, the underdog captured the hearts of the Australian audience, and although he flagged in the second half of the race, with commentator Adrian Moorhouse remarking that “this guy doesn’t look like he’s going to make it”, he completed the heat with a time of 1 minute 53 seconds.
It was the slowest time in Olympic history, but a personal best.
International media named him “Eric the Eel” and he was hailed(赞扬) as the embodiment of the Olympic ideal that it’s not the winning, but the taking part that counts.
When he was interviewed, still dripping from his exhausting feat, Moussambani remarked, “The first 50 metres was OK, but in the second 50 metres I got a bit worried and thought I wasn’t going to make it. Then something happened. I thought it was all the people getting behind me. I was really, really proud. It’s still a great feeling for me and I loved when everyone applauded me at the end. I felt like I had won a medal or something.”
Moussambani is now the head coach of the Equatorial Guinea swimming squad and thanks to his efforts, the country has since built two 50m swimming pools.

22、His uncle Harry has promised the newest addition to the royal family that will bring him “fun”—and if an old tradition is to be followed, it is a certain hope that horse racing will play a prominent role in young Prince George's future social life.
A love of horses and trained racing is deeply fixed in the House of Windsor, and his great grandmother Queen Elizabeth Ⅱ is a leading owner with a number of top horses. “She loves those racehorses being raised,” her racing manager John Warren told CNN.
The British bloodstock(纯种马) industry is very lucky to have such a queen giving money and support. The 87-year-old's most famous achievement is winning the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot with Estimate, a four-year-old female horse guided by 10-time British champion trainer Michael Stoute. When the small horse was ridden by Ryan Moore, Estimate got winning like a storm in the famous Group One race in June, the first time in its 207-year history that a British monarch(君主) had owned the winner.
“She is a very well-informed owner, probably the best-informed owner in the country,”said leading trainer Andrew Balding, who has looked after a number of the queen's horses, and knows he has to keep them in peak condition. The Queen's greatest interest in horse racing extends to low-key visits to racetracks such as Newbury, which is in the Royal County of Berkshire, to check on the progress of her horses.
“Most of the crowd would be unaware she is there, walking around the paddock, possibly wearing a headscarf,” said Attenborough, whose organization is responsible for promoting horse racing in Britain. While.

24、How good are you at maths? Some people love the challenge of algebra (代数) or enjoy working out number puzzles. Maths is all around us, from working out how to share the bill after a meal, to calculating your family bills. But many are afraid of the moment when they have to deal with numbers and figures and feel a real sense of worry and confusion. It can seem frightening, but this maths anxiety is perfectly normal, and you’re definitely not alone. And anyway, our worries and fears don’t necessarily reflect our ability.
The problem really starts in childhood, at school. Research has found that maths teachers who are nervous about teaching the subject can pass on their anxiety to the pupils, and girls may be more likely to be affected. The Programme for International Student Assessment found around 31% of 15 — and 16 — year — olds across 34 countries said they got very nervous doing maths problems, 33% said they got tense doing maths homework, and nearly 60% said they worried that maths classes would be difficult. Shulamit Kahn, a professor from Boston University, believes that giving students, particularly girls, good role models is critical, especially at a young age. She thinks the key is to get people, especially women who love maths, to teach younger children.
Writing for the BBC, David Robson says, “It’s not clear why maths causes so much fear compared to geography. But the fact that there’s no room for playing tricks might make you more worried about underperforming.” And once we assume that we’re not a maths person, we avoid solving things that we probably could do.
Psychologists have been trying to work out why mental arithmetic (心算) can bring us out in a sweat. That seed of fear may come from many sources, but some suggest that voicing your fears can loosen their control over you. They also suggest encouraging children to see a maths test as a challenge, not a threat. Most importantly, we need to think positively about maths and give it a second chance.
【1】What is the author’s understanding of maths anxiety in paragraph 1?
A.It happens when you have to pay bills after a meal.
B.It actually reflects one’s poor performance in maths.

A.The particular feature of maths.
