22、Alex Pang's amusing new book The Distraction Addiction addresses those of us who feel panic without a cellphone or computer. And that, he claims, is pretty much all of us. When we're not online, where we spend four months annually, we're engaged in the stressful work of trying to get online.
The Distraction Addiction is not framed as a self-help book. It's a thoughtful examination of the danger of our computing overdose and a historical overview of how technological advances change consciousness. A "professional futurist", Pang urges an approach which he calls "contemplative (沉思的) computing." He asks that you pay full attention to "how your mind and body interact with computers and how your attention and creativity are influenced by technology."
Pang's first job is to free you from common misconception that doing two things at once allows you to get more done. What is commonly called multitasking is, in fact, switch-tasking, and its harmful effects on productivity are well documented. Pang doesn't advocate returning to a preinternet world. Instead, he asks you to "take a more ecological (生态的) view of your relationships with technologies and look for ways devices or media may be making specific tasks easier or faster but at the same time making your work and life harder."
The Distraction Addiction is particularly fascinating on how technologies have changed certain field of labor-often for the worse. For architects, computer-aided design has become essential but in some ways has cheapened the design process. As one architect puts it, "Architecture is first and foremost about thinking... and drawing is a more productive way of thinking" than computer-aided design. Somewhat less amusing are Pang's solutions for kicking the Internet habit. He recommends the usual behavior-modification approaches, familiar to anyone who has completed a quit-smoking program. Keep logs to study your online profile and decide what you can knock out, download a program like Freedom that locks you out of your browser, or take a "digital Sabbath (安息日)" ; "Unless you're a reporter or emergency-department doctor, you'll discover that your world doesn't fall apart when you go offline."
【1】Alex Pang's new book is aimed for readers who ________.
A.find their work online too stressful
B.go online mainly for entertainment

A.Offer advice on how to use the Internet effectively.
B.Warn people of the possible dangers of Internet use.
C.Predict the trend of future technological development.
D.Examine the influence of technology on the human mind.
【3】What is the common view on multitasking?
A.It enables people to work more efficiently.
B.It is in a way quite similar to switch-tasking.
C.It makes people's work and life even harder.
D.It distracts people's attention from useful work.
【4】What is Ales Pang's recommendation for Internet users?
A.They use the Internet as little as possible.
B.They keep a record of their computer use time.
C.They exercise self-control over their time online.
D.They entertain themselves online on off-days only.
23、The research company OpenAI has recently released ChatGPT, a language model that can construct remarkably well-structured arguments based on simple cues provided by a user. The system which uses a massive source of online text to predict what words should come next is able to create new stories in the style of famous writers, write news articles about itself and produce essays that could easily receive a passing grade in most English classes.
That last use has raised concern among academics, who worry about the possibility of an easily accessible platform that, in a matter of seconds, can put together essays as good as -- if not better than -- the writing of a typical student.
Cheating in school is not new, but ChatGPT and other language models are totally different from the hacks(雇佣文人)students have used to take a shortcut in the past. The writing these language models produce is completely original, meaning that it can’t be distinguished by even the most advanced plagiarism(剽窃)software. The AI also goes beyond just providing students with information they should be finding themselves. It organizes that information into a complete narrative.
Beyond potential academic honesty issues, some teachers worry that the true value of learning to write -- like analysis, critical thinking, creativity and the ability to structure an argument -- will be lost when AI can do all those complex things in a matter of seconds.
“We might know more things but we never learned how we got there. We’ve always said that the process is the best part and we know that. The satisfaction is the best part. That might be the thing that’s removed from all of this. Actually, I don’t know what a person is like if they’ve never had to struggle through learning. I don’t know the behavioral implications of that,” said Peter Laffin.
“Whenever there’s a new technology, there’s a panic around it. It’s the responsibility of academics to have a healthy amount of distrust, but I don’t feel like this is an undefeatable challenge,“ Sandra Wachter, technology researcher, said.
【1】What is mainly stressed about ChatGPT in the first paragraph?
A.Its unusual functions.
B.Its working process.
C.Its promising future.

【2】What is unique about ChatGPT’s writings?
A.They belong to a new cheating form.
B.They are writings of ChatGPT’s own.
C.They provide students with all needed information.
D.They are better than writings from the hacks.
【3】What is Peter Laffin concerned about?
A.AI makes us struggle through learning.
B.AI might be improperly used by hacks.
C.AI might rob us of the pleasure of learning.
D.AI might result in many writers losing their jobs.
【4】What can we infer from Sandra Wachter’s words?
A.He is pleased to see the release of ChatGPT.
B.He is ready for the challenges from ChatGPT.
C.He is in a panic about the use of ChatGPT.
D.He has a healthy distrust of ChatGPT.
24、 The Transoceanic Highway has been celebrated as one of South America's greatest engineering achievements, and supporters say it will greatly improve people's lives. Until recently, travel between the cities of Cusco and Puerto Maldonado in Peru took days by bus or truck—as Mary Luz's story illustrates—and drivers had to use narrow, parually unpaved mountain roads. Now, thanks to the new highway, the trip only takes a few hours, and is much safer.
Despite the highway's many potential benefits, environmentalists are concerned. The Transoceanic passes directly through a large part of the Amazon rain forest, in the state of Madre de Dios in Peru. According to a Peruvian government study, the forested area in the western mountains of this state has the greatest biodiversity of any place on Earth, and until recently, large parts of the forest were in pristine (未开发的) condition. As more people are moving into the region, environmentalists are worrying about the impact this will have on the Amazon's plants and animals, many of which are found nowhere else.
Shortly after the highway opened, large numbers of people began coming into Puerto Maldonado from all over Peru—and the world—to mine gold. There's a lot of money to be made in mining, as well as in farming, says environmental photographer Gabby Salazar. “I think we're going to see a big increase in farming,” she says. “Right across the border in Brazil, you see soybean farms all over the place.” Studies show three-quarters of the deforestation of the Brazilian Amazon occurs within 50 kilometers (30 miles) of a highway, and environmentalist like Salazar are concerned that the same thing will happen in Peru. “It's having an impact on the environment,” she explains. “It's having an impact on the people as well.”
Faced with these risks, many Peruvians talk about the importance of being practical, “In rural Peru, a lot of people are living in poverty, so it's very difficult to say don't build the highway.” explains Roger Mustalish, president of the Amazon Center for Environmental Education and Research. “But every time you see a road like this going through, you soon see major changes.” Will these changes be mostly positive or negative? Many Peruvians are hopeful, but only time will tell.

【2】Which of the following concerns does the passage specifically mention?
A.Increased mining will lead to soil erosion.
B.Farming will lead to an increase in water pollution.
C.The highway will have an impact on plants and animals.
D.The cities along the highway will become overpopulated.
【3】What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.A highway like this brings about major changes on the environment.
B.Economic development and environment protection need to be well balanced.
C.It's too soon to say whether the highway will bring more good than harm or not.
D.People in rural Peru are willing to sacrifice their benefits for the good of the environment.
【4】What's the author's tone in writing this passage?
A.Positive
B.Subjective
C.Negative
D.Objective
25、How to help your kids find a purpose? You don’t have to start with the really big questions. Quick, what’s the meaning of life?” Many of us may not be able to answer that, but that doesn’t ______ our kids don’t have questions or need answers.
“The sense that your personal life is ______ to you is a basis of psychological well-being,” says Michael F. Steger, director of the laboratory for Meaning and Quality of Life at Colorado State University. Not only that,it is tightly tied to being happier, more positive, more ______, more caring, more helpful, more resilient (坚韧), and more satisfied in your life, relationships, and work.
But helping your kids find meaning doesn’t mean parents have to ______ all life’s ancient mysteries, Steger says. The ______ is to understand the difference between the meaning of life and the meaning in life.
“We do not have to start with the biggest and most troubling questions about our lives,” Steger says. “We can start with trying to ______ how, today, right now, we are going to do one thing that makes the story of our lives more positive, or makes a positive difference to someone else.”
With kids in ______ school, Steger says, “At the most basic level, our best hopes for our children are that they feel their lives matter and that they ______.” To start conversations along those lines, says Steger, “You can ask questions about what they think their best ______ or strengths are, whether they have good relationships with other people, whether they care about others. You can ask them about times when they have made a difference, made someone feel better, felt ______ for doing something, or helped someone out. All of these kinds of questions can start a conversation about your kid’s ______ way of being in and contributing to the world.”
In middle school, says Steger, “Kids are being exposed to ideas, behaviors, assumptions, and priorities that might be ______ different from the ones they have always assumed were true.” So for kids this age, parents can start conversations focusing on how your children’s sense of who they are, how they related to others and what life is has been ______.
By high school, according to Steger, “We hope our children see how much their lives matter, see that they are at the beginning of an exciting and strengthening life story, and have some slight ideas about ______.” But the question of what you want to do with your life is too big for a single conversation, says Steger. Instead, he encourages parents to have ______, smaller conversations with their kids about how they view themselves and their lives, and what kind of impact they would like to make.

26、书面表达
Right after the Second World War, Germany was in ruins. Almost all the houses, factories and schools were destroyed. Plenty of people were homeless as well as jobless. Worse still, the supply of water and electricity was often cut off in the city. Two American journalists interviewed a German family living in the basement. The husband was disabled from the war and the wife was just dismissed from a clothing company. Worse still, there were bills for them to pay—four children to care for and food to buy. Life was hard for them at that time.
After the interview, the journalists chatted with each other on the way back to the company.
“Do you think the Germans could rebuild their homeland?”
“Absolutely.”
“But I can’t see any hope for the country at all. How can you be so certain about that?”
“Have you noticed what they put on the table in the basement? There was a vase of flowers. A nation, suffering at such moment, hasn’t forgotten about flowers. It shows that hopes are not lost. They are still able to dream. A nation with hope can create miracles. They are sure to be able to rebuild their homeland.”
